ELBOW – Melancholic Crooners Released 9th Album ‘FLYING DREAM 1’ Today

19 November 2021

Band: ELBOW
Who: Melancholic corners from Manchester
Active: Since 1997 / 9 studio albums (including the new one)

New album: FLYING DREAM 1
Released: 19 November 2021

Guy Garvey (frontman): “We realised we were making a record free of
the usual creative guidelines. We love patient, quiet, whole albums like the
last Talk Talk records, John Martyn’s ‘Sold Air’ and PJ Harvey‘s ‘Is This Desire’.”

NME says: “Bury’s finest return with a record that reflects on times and friends
gone by… The record’s unhurried approach and unassuming manner will still
bring comfort to those who seek solace in Garvey’s lyrics and Elbow’s
adept consistency.”
Full review here. Score: 3/5.

Turn Up The Volume: Nothing really new with the new Elbow one.
Yet, always gripping, soulful, tender and for heart and soul music lovers.

New single: SIX WORDS

Guy Garvey (frontman): “I can’t remember the exact genesis of the track,
but it is definitely one of Craig’s. In some ways it’s familiar territory lyrically…
The musical revelation came when we heard the backing singers that now
end the track. We had this pyramid of voices making something incredible
that reminded me of the early classic Disney soundtracks. It was so powerful
that we knew we had to throw the spotlight onto them so that is why they end
the track.”

Harmonious magnificence, soulful sentiments, vintage Elbow.

Guy Garvey, August 2021: “We don’t phone each other for a chat. We don’t
talk about life outside the music until we’re together. These hushed night-time
missives told us how each other were doing. When we finally got together, all
that was to do was record the songs, honour them with amazing additional
singers and players in a gorgeous space and catch up. It was beautiful.’

Highly Praised Third Album ‘LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD’ By ELBOW Came Out 15 Years Ago

13 September 2020

Band: ELBOW (Manchester)
Album: LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD – third LP
Released: 12 September 2005 – 15 years ago

NME verdict: “Returning to his roots to record Elbow’s third album inspired Guy Garvey to write this love letter to his home town, warts and all. It also happens to be their best LP yet… Elbow’s Guy Garvey isn’t your average pop star. A romantic grump with the voice of a cherub, he makes no attempt to cover up his thirtysomething years with a fake birth certificate. He doesn’t dance. He barely even shaves. And then there’s his band, who after 10 years of struggle have earned themselves a reputation as the drinking man’s Coldplay… If there’s any justice, it should also see Garvey rubbing shoulders with other anti-popstars like Chris Martin. ‘Leaders Of The Free World’ is a masterpiece; further proof that this is a band to last you a lifetime.”

“I’m not David Bowie. Who are we kidding? At the end of the day, I’m the same
person I’ve always been. I’m Don Garvey’s son from up the road.”
Guy Harvey
