Soul Giant AL GREEN Covers R.E.M. – Here’s His Version Of ‘EVERYBODY HURTS’

20 November 2024

78-year-old soul star AL GREEN is one of those artists who
are known/loved by several generations, by old and young.

Let’s Stay Together from his same-titled 1972 LP was his greatest hit (almost
580 million streams on Spotify). It topped the US Charts and peaked at #7 in the UK.
He recorded/released 29 albums, with Lay It Down as his most recent one. It came
out in 2008. He still performs now and then.

Last year, he shared his cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day.
Now, he has another cover to offer with his take on R.E.M.‘s
1992 tearjerker EVERYBODY HURTS.

Green: “Recording ‘Everybody Hurts,’ I could really feel the heaviness of the song, and I wanted to inject a little touch of hope and light into it. There’s always a presence of light that can break through those times of darkness.”

AllMusic: “A haunting, melancholy masterpiece… R.E.M. have
never been as emotionally direct as they are here, nor have they
ever created music quite as rich and timeless, and while the record
is not an easy listen, it is the most rewarding record in their oeuvre.”

Score: 5/5.

TUTV: They put a masterly album on the moon with this one.
A commercial blockbuster, as we know it.
