GRAMPFATHER – New 6-Track EP ‘666G’ Is A Guitar Driven Indie Triumph In Absurd Times

Standout extended plays

20 August 2022

Who: An eclectic rock band based out of Kingston NY,
whose material traverses a variety of rock genres, such
as indie, garage, punk, psych, chill, and thrash.

New EP: 666G

The band: “In this project we take on themes of modern anxieties, such as
the abundance of (often unfounded) conspiracies that attribute to the spread
of misinformation/disinformation, the looming AI takeover, and timeless anxieties
like aging and paranoia.

In this sense, the title 666G is a parody of the 5G conspiracy. 666G is the phenomenon
of people stratifying themselves into factions of wavering extremes based on their perceived affiliation with viral half truths and convenient fictions. With all that said, we try to present a lighthearted perspective of our fucked up world in a way that we can learn to laugh at the absurdity of it all.”

Turn Up The Volume: This New York 4-piece is on a productive roll. Last March they scored their 5th LP, titled Gramppappies (you can read my review here) and the New Yorkers already hit again with a new 6-track EP. An electrical firework body of work, motorized by glowing guitar extravaganza.

Think of Interpol‘s 6-string brightness (Pawl Mawl Menthawls / 666G) on their debut LP (turned 20 today), British indie idols The Wedding Present‘s strummed sonority (The Man
In The Wall / Hot Dog Beach
) and flashes here and there of Pavement‘s mid-tempo riff bravado ( To My Rotting Body and Brain / The Singularity)

I wouldn’t mind at all if Grampfather come up with some slices of new music in a few months. I’m a sucker for indie rock spiritedness in sound and vision and vocality and recommend this indie triumph strongly to all other suckers of indie rock spiritedness
in sound and vision and vocality.

Psychedelic Prog Rock Pandemonium With Riff Junks GRAMPFATHER

14 March 2022

Who: An eclectic rock band based out of Kingston NY,
whose material traverses a variety of rock genres, such
as indie, garage, punk, psych, chill, and thrash.

The group’s 5th longplayer

Grampfather: “Gramppappies, our fifth album, is our most realized album yet in that it encapsulates our range of sounds, wavering between abrasive rockers and indie chillers.
While our last album, Magnum Grampus, was fueled by the anger and frustration conjured
by the countless tragedies of 2020, Gramppappies offers more hope for the future, a weighted, contemplative hope that’s informed by past experiences and events, and not a naive, starry-eyed one. A main theme that’s threaded throughout the album is our appreciation of music, the role it plays in our lives, and how it keeps us going despite the many miseries we’ll endure in this life. It’s too easy to just give up and resolve that it’s all hopeless. The contrary seems like a much better and brighter path. Here’s to hoping for hope.”

Turn Up The Volume: These riff-crazy motherrockers know a thing or two and so
much more about psychedelic prog-rock’s history, from the 60s all the way to today.

At times they go mental the way Aussie gang King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard go
mental (Murder Hornets / The Myspace Continuum / Large Garbage), at times (when
they slow down) they do it the way Canadian legends Rush did it and still do it with
guitar solos packed jams (Weeding / Dead Ends), with Poppies you get a sticky pop
tune to whistle to, on Thad B. Radd they storm like hungry punks, and droning
closer The Grampening brings Black Sabbath to mind.

Get the sonic picture? Yep, this is a flaming-hot top record.

Singles: Poppies / Murder Hornets

Psychedelic Guitar Frenzy With GRAMPFATHER And New Single ‘GRAMPPAPPIES

Daily electricity to load your batteries

29 January 2022

Who: An eclectic rock band based out of Kingston NY,
whose material traverses a variety of rock genres, such
as indie, garage, punk, psych, chill, and thrash.

From the band’s 6th studio LP Gramppappies,
out on 25th February

James Kwapisz (guitar and vocals): “I wrote ‘Murder Hornets’ as a follow-up to our 2020 album ‘Magnum Grampus,’ our thrash album. What with the pandemic and all the blaring social injustices that came to define 2020, the news of incoming murder hornets just seemed like such a cartoonish cherry on top of all the misery and dread. Although the album starts off where ‘Magnum Grampus’ ends, the new album, ‘Gramppappies’ does get more hopeful as it progresses.”

Turn Up The Volume: It all starts with a raucous jangly groove and a bluesy harmonica
in the back. But after 60 seconds the fever rises, the speed goes up, and raving mad guitars cause fireworks all over the place. All burners on! High-strung vocals amplify this belter’s nervousness while working its way to a 60s psychedelia-charged finale. You’ll be
out of breath in the end. Striking stroke! Holy cow!
