7 May 1977 – EAGLES Topped The US Single Charts With Everlasting Classic ‘HOTEL CALIFORNIA’ 47 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

7 May 2024

Legendary Californian rockers EAGLES scored a gigantic hit with their brilliant epic story of HOTEL CALIFONRIA that always reminds me, when I hear the song, of the remote hotel in the mountains in the classic horror movie The Shining with Jack Nicholson delivering one of his best psycho performances ever.

This everlasting classic was written by Don Felder & Don Henley (music), and the late Glenn Frey (lyrics) and featured a memorable Joe Walsh guitar solo. It peaked at #1 in
the US today 47 years ago, on 11 May 1977, and scored big time on the rest of the planet.
It was the title track of their fifth full length and sublime million-seller album that turned
the band into global rock stars.

You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave”

EAGELS – Deluxe Ultimate Music Guide

All you need to know about one of the biggest bands ever.

“One thing you can be pretty sure the Eagles never did was to take it easy. Though already veterans of several countrywide late 1960s bands from the tail-end of the country rock boom, as you’ll read in this new Deluxe Edition, by the time the original line-up came together at Doug Weston’s Troubadour Club in Los Angeles, they weren’t so much disheartened by what had gone before, more primed and ready to make their next move.

In the right place at the right time, the Eagles seized their moment. Ambitious musically as well as personally, they were driven by what some called perfectionism, but might more correctly be identified as a desire to maximise their potential. Over their legendary run of albums in the 1970s – reviewed in-depth on the following pages – the band moved from definitively mellow recordings with contributions from each member, through concept albums, and increasingly to a completely unique and widescreen take on the state of their era. Along the way, they touched on ecology, paranoid relationships, hard rock and disco.

The fact that the Eagles are still playing in 2024 – now on the “Long Goodbye Tour”, is
down to the strength of music made on that run of 1970s albums. In his most recent meeting with Uncut, the band’s driving force, Don Henley, was circumspect on many aspects of the band’s career – but still couldn’t quite get over their decision to reform in 1994, and just how much Eagles music still means
“.

EAGLES Released Magnum Opus ‘HOTEL CALIFORNIA’ 45 Years Ago Today

Back in time

8 December 2021

Band: EAGLES
Who: Iconic Los Angeles rockers
Original members: Don Henley, Glenn Frey (R.I.P.),
Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, and Don Felder.
Active: 1971–1980, 1994–2016, 2017–present / 7 studio LPs

Anniversary album: HOTEL CALIFORNIA – their 5th LP
Released: 8 December 1976 – 45 years ago today

AllMusic/William Ruhlmann said: The album was their first to be made without
Bernie Leadon, who had given the band much of its country flavor, and with rock guitarist
Joe Walsh… In the early part of their career, the Eagles never seemed to get a sound big enough for their ambitions; after changes in producer and personnel, as well as a noticeable growth in creativity, Hotel California unveiled what seemed almost like a whole new band. It was a band that could be bombastic, but also one that made music worthy of the later tag of “classic rock,” music appropriate for the arenas and stadiums the band was playing. Result was the Eagles’ biggest-selling regular album release, and one of the most successful rock albums ever.”

Happy 70 To JOE WALSH – Singer/Songwriter And Virtuosic Guitar Legend…

Seventy years ago today – 20 November 1947 – Joseph Fidler Walsh, better know as
JOE WALSH was born in Wichita, Kansas, US. A brilliant guitarist and singer-songwriter
who played with bands such as James Gang, Barnstorm and The Party Boys while releasing solo albums in between. But he became globally famous when he joined legendary L.A. rockers the EAGLES in 1975 for their masterpiece LP HOTEL CALIFORNIA. To celebrate
the man’s 70th birthday here are three classic Walsh performances…

* ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY (his most famous knockout – 1973)

* HOTEL CALIFORNIA (superb guitar play with the Eagles – live 1977)

* LIFE IN THE FAST LANE (from the Eagles ‘Hotel California LP based on a Walsh riff and here played with Ringo Starr’s All Star band)
