DEPECHE MODE Frontman DAVE GAHAN Covers Legends THE GUN CLUB With Formidable ‘MOTHER OF EARTH’ Version

25 July 2023

For the past decade, a group of friends and fans of Jeffrey Lee Pierce,
the late great frontman of wayward rock band The Gun Club (1979–1996)
have recorded 3 posthumous tribute albums called
the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project.

The fourth volume of that series is now canned The Task Has Overwhelmed Us,
and comes in September. It’ll feature contributions from big names such as
Nick Cave, Debbie Harry, Mark Lanegan, Warren Ellis, Mick Harvey, Lydia Lunch,
and more.

Depeche Mode‘s voice/face DAVE GAHAN
is also part of the star cast.

His version of country rock pearl MOTHER EARTH
from the Gun Club‘s 1982 LP Miami is formidable.

He slowed it down, and after a downhearted piano intro, the song
swells with tension and burning guitar-infused electricity and ends
with the melancholic first part.

DEBBIE HARRY (Happy 78) And NICK CAVE Cover GUN CLUB Mastermind JEFFREY LEE PIERCE (Happy 65)

1 July 2023

Last Wednesday the late Jeffrey Lee Pierce, the wayward mastermind of underrated
indie mavericks Gun Club from L.A. would have celebrated his 65th birthday. Today
glam pop-punk diva Debbie Harry turns 78. Born Angela Trimble July 1, 1945 in Miami.

And yesterday she and expert crooner Nick Cave shared their duet cover of JLP song
On The Other Side. A pearl he only played live for a while. I’m sure there’s a connection between all those facts.

Cypress Grove (British songwriter who played with JLP): “Jeffrey Lee Pierce only performed the song live a few times, faster in tempo before being transformed into an exquisite ballad with Cave on piano, me on guitar, synth by Warren Ellis and Guido Benigni on bass providing
a sensitive backdrop to Nick and Debbie’s unearthly vocal.”

Turn Up The Volume‘s best cover of the month, June 2023.

Heart-and-Soul Touching.

The song will feature on a Jeffrey Lee Pierce tribute album titled The Task Has Overwhelmed Us coming in September. Many other big names are on it too, such
as the late Mark Lanegan, Lydia Lunch, Dave Gahan, the Coathangers, Jim Jarmusch
and more.

Happy 65 To JEFFREY LEE PIERCE

26 June 2023

JEFFREY LEE PIERCE was born in Montebello, California on 27 June 1958.

The voice and face of post-punk blues band THE GUN CLUB would have
celebrated his 65th birthday today. Unfortunately, he died from a blood
clot on his brain in 1996,
aged only 37.

To remember him, here’s one of my most beloved The Gun Club songs.
CRY TO ME from the stellar Lucky Jim LP that came out in 1993.

TODAY’S YESTERDAY ALBUM – ‘The Las Vegas Story’ – By… THE GUN CLUB

Remarkable longplayers from the past

‘The Las Vegas Story’
THE GUN CLUB

Released: 15 June 1984
Third album

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Late frontman /guitarist Jeffrey Lee Pierce was writing feverish rock & roll songs that took their inspiration from Southern blues and West Texas country music all framed by an angular, jagged post-punk energy. The screaming rawness at the heart of the band’s debut, Fire of Love, had been replaced by a dry, moaning lonesome, percussion heavy desert sound, space and echo float through the mix like a ghost through Pierce’s slide guitar playing. Bass drum and tom-toms fuel the attack with a basic, primitive nocturnal energy. Topics ranged from personal disintegration in “Walkin’ with the Beast,” and the country-blues-drenched “Eternally Is Here,” and the shambolic, two-step country confusion of “My Dreams” that quotes directly from Television’s “Marquee Moon” to the disappearance of the nation in “Bad America”‘s edgy guitar wrangle. There are a couple of covers on the set tossed right in the center of the album: “The Master Plan,” a spooky, brooding, rock read of Pharoah Sanders’ and Leon Thomas’ “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” and a slovenly, funereal version of “My Man’s Gone Now,” by George and Ira Gershwin from Porgy and Bess. The Las Vegas Story is a provocative record that reveals the Gun Club was pulled in many directions at once, and though the tension is in evidence on every track, it nonetheless holds together. After ‘Fire of Love’, ‘The Las Vegas
Story’ is their most satisfying album and is, perhaps, the band’s most visionary offering.”
