THE MIRACULOUS LOVE KIDS And BETH GIBBONS (Portishead) Cover DAVID BOWIE And JOY DIVISION

18 August 2023

THE MIRACULOUS LOVE KIDS are a musical group of Afghan
girls who along with their families, escaped Kabul, Afghanistan
and fled to Islamabad, Pakistan when the Taliban took over the
country again.

The group was founded by American
musician and activist Lanny Cordola.

To mark the second anniversary of the tragic turnaround, they recorded
covers of two songs with Beth Gibson, the arresting vocalist/lyricist of
British trip-hop act.

To gain much-needed attention they decided to cover two classics.
Atmosphere (1980) by Joy Division and Heroes (1977) by David Bowie.

The collaborative performances are heart-warming.

NOEL GALLAGHER Covers JOY DIVISION

4 June 2023

(BBC)

NOEL GALLAGHER was the new guest to perform with the BBC Concert Orchestra as part of their Radio 2 Piano Room sessions. Among new material he played a cover of Joy Division classic Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Why that one?

NG: “You can’t get out the BBC without doing a cover. When they asked me to do this I was like ‘I’m afraid I’m all Bob Dylan-ed out… I don’t know what to do. I would play this song, this version of it, at home down the years. When they asked me to do it, I was like ‘How can I get away with that?’ Because it’s such an iconic [song] and, being from Manchester… well, this is going to be tricky. But now I’ve got my own studio, I went and did a little demo of it and I was like ‘You know what? I think I might be able to pull this off.’ So we’re going to do ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by the Divs.”

TRANSMISSION – JOY DIVSION

8 April 2023

Listen to the silence, let it ring on
Eyes, dark grey lenses frightened of the sun
We would have a fine time living in the night
Left to blind destruction, waiting for our sight

And we would go on as though nothing was wrong
And hide from these days we remained all alone
Staying in the same place, just staying out the time
Touching from a distance, further all the time

Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio

Well I could call out when the going gets tough
The things that we’ve learnt are no longer enough
No language, just sound, that’s all we need know
To synchronise love to the beat of the show
And we could dance

Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio

Happy B. HOOKY!

13 February 2023

If there’s one bass player you always recognize when he pulls his strings it’s PETER HOOK also known as HOOKY. The man who created a sound that was fundamental and essential for Joy Division as well as for New Order. The man who plays his beloved instrument as if it has six strings instead of four. Hooky‘s resonance is unique and ageless as he still proves, for years now, with his band The Light, on stages around the globe.

Today the Manchester legend celebrates his 66th birthday.
Turn Up The Volume picked 3 great Hooky moments for this
festive occasion.

– LOVE WILL TEAR US APART –
(Joy Division classic played live with The Light)

– ATMOSPHERE –
(Joy Division classic – with awesome soul voice Rowetta)

TEMPTATION –
(New Order gem)
