‘NEW DAWN FADES – A PLAY ABOUT JOY DIVISION AND MANCHESTER’ Returns In 2023

26 December 2022

NEW DAWN FADES – A PLAY ABOUT JOY DIVISION AND MANCHESTER is
the critically acclaimed play that chronicles the rise and fall of Manchester’s
ground-breaking post-punk band and the tragic suicide of lead singer IAN CURTIS.

“The audience is guided through the heart and soul of both the band and the city, interviewing an array of historical figures, including Roman General Julius Agricola, Dr John Dee, and the Buzzcocks! The result is a spellbinding journey of love, passion, progress, grief, and of course music, drawing inspiration from the enigmatic lyrics of Ian Curtis, with a soundtrack featuring live performances of his most beloved tracks.”

The play toured the UK since 2013.

The makers just announced that the play comes back in
September 2023 to celebrate its 10th Anniversary. All info HERE.

The Sound Of JOY DIVISION Orchestrated

6 August 2022

.

PETER HOOK (former bassist of legendary post-punk band Joy Division)
in collaboration with symphonic orchestra Manchester Orchestra played
a surprising show at the historic Royal Albert Hall in London billed as
The Sound Of Joy Division Orchestrated.

The spectacle returns now for two concerts,
one in Manchester and one in London again.

“With its first edition at the Royal Albert Hall, The Sound Of Joy Division Orchestrated accommodated the need to reminisce about the dark romanticism of the band’s
music and the intensity of their live shows. The event celebrated the 40th anniversary
of Joy Division’s debut album Unknown Pleasures. “

Peter Hook: “It takes Joy Division’s music to a whole different place,
emotionally and aurally. It is difficult to transcribe but I love the challenge,
and it brings a freshness to the whole concept.”

IAN CURTIS

Stretford, UK 15 July 1956 – Macclesfield, 18 May 1980

Walk in silence
Don’t walk away, in silence
See the danger
Always danger

Endless talking
Life rebuilding
Don’t walk away

Walk in silence
Don’t turn away, in silence
Your confusion
My illusion

Worn like a mask of self-hate
Confronts and then dies
Don’t walk away

People like you find it easy
Naked to see
Walking on air
Hunting by the rivers,
through the streets,
every corner

Abandoned too soon
Set down with due care
Don’t walk away in silence
Don’t walk away

Movie This! JOY DIVISION – A Documentary – 2007

JOY DIVISION
A Documentary

What: this docu follows the unlikely rise of working-class lads Joy Division up to Ian Curtis‘s suicide with rare footage of the group and interviews with band members, their entourage and other Manchester punk celebrities of that era, as well as their moody and starkly photographed videos, capturing the essence of what made Joy Division so special and
so tragic.

Directed by Grant Gee – 2007

Film critic Philip French wrote: “Someone says in the film that the revolutionary step they made was to progress from the usual punk group’s angry statement: ‘Fuck you.’ Joy Division were the first to say: ‘We’re fucked.’ There is a particularly impressive sequence in which dark, despairing tracks of urban alienation and angst from the 1979 album Unknown Pleasures are accompanied by a speeded-up nocturnal journey around Manchester. It has the hallucinatory sci-fi feeling of Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville.”

Happy B. HOOKY!

If there’s one bass player you always recognize when he pulls his strings it’s PETER HOOK also known as HOOKY. The man who created a sound that was fundamental and essential for Joy Division as well as for New Order. The man who plays his beloved instrument as if it has six strings instead of four. Hooky‘s resonance is unique and ageless as he still proves, for years now, with his band The Light, on stages around the globe.

Today is his 65th birthday! Happy B. Hooky!

Let’s celebrate with these four standouts…

– LOVE WILL TEAR US APART –
(Joy Division classic)

– ATMOSPHERE –
(Joy Division classic – with awesome soul voice Rowetta)

TEMPTATION –
(New Order)

– ARIES –
(A superb song by Gorillaz with Hooky here on vocals instead of
Damon Albarn. It’s on their new Song Machine album)
