Blues pioneer MUDDY WATERS (real name: McKinley Morganfield, Issaquena County, Mississippi) would have celebrated his 112th birthday today. What a mannish boy.
He influenced a ton of white rockers, not in the least Keith Richards, who adored
him and learned a lot from Waters to turn himself into the human riff he was/is.

American rock-pop legend ALEX CHILTON started his career in the mid-60s.
As a teenager he fronted a band called The Box Tops who scored a No. 1 in
the US in 1967 with their cover of asong called The Letter.
Afterward, Chilton formed the highly influential band BIG STAR (1971–1975, 1993–2010) and released also
solo work now and then.
He passed away 15 years ago following a heart
attack, on 17 March 2010, aged 59. R.I.P.

Last Thursday the brill guitaristBRIAN JAMES who co-founded the legendary proto-punk band THE DAMNED in 1976, has passed away, aged 70. No cause of death was revealed.
Afterward he kept on playing with different acts and big names such as badass Iggy Pop,Blondie’s Clem Burke, MC5’s Wayne Kramer, The Police’s Stewart Copeland
and others.
He wrote the very first British punk song (James never want to label what
they did was punk) with the smashing Damned‘s debut single NEW ROSE.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL has passed away yesterday at the age of 78 after a long illness. The wonderful, glamorous persona and singular voice fought breast cancer and Covid-19 the past few years. Her career started as rolling stone girl who was Mick Jagger‘s fiancée for several years.
She recorded/released countless albums. She was a compelling live artist (as I
witnessed a couple of times) and she played in several movies. An icon forever.
Singer-songwriter ROBERT WYATT(real name Robert Wyatt-Ellidge) was born
on 28 January 1945. Happy 80 to the man who formed Soft Machine (1966)
and Matching Mole (1971). He became paraplegic following an accidental fall
from a window in 1973.
He started a long and much-acclaimed solo career which ended in 2014 when
he retired with this message: “Here is a pride in stopping, I don’t want the music
to go off.”
Clive Langer composed the music and Elvis Costello
wrote the lyrics as Wyatt wasn’t happy about his own
words. Released as a single in 1982, re-released a year
later.
Guitar virtuoso EDDIE VAN HALEN was born named Edward Lodewijk Van Halen
in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 26 January 1955. He would have celebrated his 70th birthday today.
As co-founder of rock giants Van Halen he made/released
12 studio LPs between 1978 and 2012 with the glam band.
Their 1996 single JUMP was an astronomical hit,
as we know. Almost 1 billion streams on Spotify.

He was a once-in-a-lifetime movie fantasizer and a mysterious surrealist. He’s probably best known for the terrifying drama series Twin Peaks (three seasons, 1990/1991/2017).
Story: A mysterious woman has a traffic accident on Mulholland Drive in L.A. and loses her memory afterward. Meanwhile, a young woman comes to the City of Angels, hoping to start a film career. When she finds the mysterious woman in her flat, she decides to help her find out what happened to her. The two women embark on a bizarre quest for the truth.
All the great Lynch characteristics – (ir)reality, hallucination, delusions, fiction, absurdity, fantasy, nightmares – come together here and turn your mind upside down. Perplexing stuff.
My fav scene is when American songstress Rebekah Del Rio (what a name!), who has a three-octave vocal range, sings Roy Orbison‘s melodramatic hit Crying in Spanish, titled Llorando, in an obscure theatre watched by the two women, confused and in tears. Every single time I saw/see this fragment shivers go down my spine.
SHANE MACGOWAN, the former voice/face of iconic English-Irish misfits The Pogues, one of the greatest performers/songwriters ever, passed
away today 1 year ago, on 30 November 2023 after being sick for some
time.
He was aged 65. This Christmas Day he would have celebrated his 67th one. Shane had a wild life filled with lots of alcohol. Yet, he seemed to survive
anyway and live forever.

Last May the music world was shocked when the sad news of
the sudden death of renowned producer STEVE ALBINI came
in. He died of a heart attack, only 61.
He produced so many artists/bands with Kim Deal as one
of the most recent ones. Albini produced her brand-new solo
album Nobody Loves You More.
It was so weird to see that a couple of weeks later Albini‘s band Shellac, had their 6th LP, named TO ALL TRAINS, out. One of
the best albums of 2024 on my list.

Yesterday, a street arrow near his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago,
renamed Steve Albini Way, was officially revealed. Kim Deal spoke
at the ceremony and the Mekons and Jeff Tweedy played some songs.
Kim Deal: “He was a flawed human; he would contradict himself in two sentences.
But at his core he understood the value of each person. Well, not each person. If you
were a bully, he wouldn’t like you at all. Maybe he stuck up for people too hard. He
wanted to stick up for the underdogs. He really didn’t like ‘winners.’ I think he liked
people with a good, healthy dose of low self esteem.”
