How Was 2025 For Glamorous German Indie Pop Punks LOBSTERBOMB?

10 December 2025

LOBSTERBOMB, the glamorous pop punk outfit
from Berlin, released their second album, titled
Overstimulated last September.

The splashy trio serve a salvo of riff-roasting firecrackers. Enough
fervid firepower to keep you in a hyperkinetic trance of perked up
elation throughout. You’ll feel overwhelmingly overstimulated in
the end.

Let’s have a chat about it with Crayon, Nico, and Vik.

But first a slice of manic music, with one
of the sizzling singles of the full-length.

Which track would you pick and why to introduce
the band to music fans who don’t know you?

Crayon: “‘Not Again’ is probably a good starting point as it’s a pretty straightforward
blast of punky energy. We don’t always stick to the punky style, but it’s often the starting point.”

Nico: “‘Not Again’ is also our biggest music video hit on YouTube right now. We worked with Unlostfilmes and shot it in a single take in Vik’s neighbour’s attic. Definitely worth a watch.”

Debut album LOOK OUT came out in 2023.
How do you look back at it today?

Crayon: “It’s still something we are proud of. Every release contains a lot of work
and emotional energy. But also, we are happy that for the new album we worked
with producer Karen Dhios, and were a little less DIY in our approach, Look Out
has a lot more rough edges.”

Nico: “I never really feel happy or satisfied once I release something. So I don’t dare listen to the old stuff anymore. I just keep looking ahead. What’s done is done; the past belongs to the past.”

This year’s blazing follow-up is titled OVERSTIMULATED.
What do you want to express with it?

Nico: “Overstimulated is about living in a world that never stops screaming at you,
emotionally, digitally, mentally. It’s about burnout, chaos, pressure, and still trying
to find yourself in the middle of it all.

Overstimulated is also about being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world, trying to function in a system that isn’t made for you. It’s set against the backdrop of an unfair world run by people who seem to have lost their minds. The album is both a scream
for change and a cry for peace. A demand for something to shift drastically.”

Crayon: “We aren’t really a high concept band, we just wanted to write songs about however we felt at that time. There is a fair amount of dread and worry since there is
a lot of that in the air recently, but also a healthy amount of constructive thinking and optimism – trying to figure out ways to cope rather than letting things get overbearing.”

Were you inspired by other artists/music to write this one?

Nico: “Some of the song ideas came to me in dreams, others from weeks of experimenting while I was jobless, haha. I’m generally inspired by so many different music genres. They all kind of mash together in my head and turn into something new.”

Crayon: “Not so much by specific artists, but some elements are more grunge
influenced than our previous album. The fuzz pedal got more of a workout.”

One of the highlights to my ears is the single FALLING. What’s the song about?

Nico: “It took me years to heal from an abusive relationship. I wrote this song to give hope to others, to show that there is always a way out. There’s always a chance for change, even when it feels impossible in the depths of it. It’s painful to leave, but it’s so worth it to kick yourself free.”

What’s the story behind the LP’s cover?

Vik: “It’s supposed to show the calm space you can create
for yourself when escaping the sensory input of the world.”

What’s your favourite track on the album, and why?

Crayon: “It’s mean to make us choose favourites. The title track
is a lot of fun to play live, so we’ll say that, but we like them all!”

Nico: “Yes, all the songs have a special place in my heart. But in terms
of the message I want to send out into the world, “Every Day” and “Warning
mean the most to me.

We’re living in unprecedented times where a handful of billionaire psychopaths
are running the world into the ground, making it nearly impossible for most people
to live properly.

With these two songs, I want to inspire people to wake up, see what’s happening,
and take action – to stand up for those who can’t, to boycott where it matters,
and to have some spine!”

Vik: “I love Pillbiter as it’s a vulnerable but powerful song.”

.

Suppose the album was the soundtrack for a movie.
Which genre would it be and why?

Nico: “If Overstimulated were a movie, it would be an indie coming-of-age sci-fi
end-of-the-world rom-com, I believe, haha. A mix of chaos, emotion, and existential
humour. It’s loud, messy, and a little bit heartbreaking, but somehow still hopeful.”

In the past, and still today, artists like Bowie, U2, and Nick Cave went to live
for a while in Berlin because the city was a huge source of inspiration for creating new music. Do you feel the same way about Berlin as residents?

Crayon: “In some ways, it is the same in that you can find creative people in
whatever niche you are interested in, and the city still is very rich culturally.

But 35 years after reunification Berlin is not the same as it was for the people mentioned, and it would be good for the city to stop relying on past glories for its image and invest in the current cultural scene which is under huge pressure from all sides. There are so many talented bands, we can start building some new icons.”

Nico: “Berlin has always been a huge inspiration for me, especially in
the early days when I moved here in 2002. Back then, the city felt very
different: free, artistic, and affordable. There was this raw, creative energy
everywhere.

But over time, as tech bros and start-ups took over, and investors bought up housing, much of that spirit faded. Berlin doesn’t feel the same anymore; it’s become more stressful than inspiring at times. These days, I often travel to recharge and find new sources of inspiration elsewhere. Or I sit at home watching TikTok, cos it’s damn depressing out there.”

Your favorite album of the year?

Crayon: “Amyl & the Sniffers’ ‘Cartoon Darkness’.”

Nico: “‘Don’t Tap the Glass‘ by Tyler, the Creator.

Vik: Albums ‘Never Enough‘ by Turnstile, ‘Salvation’
by Rebecca Black, ‘I’m Nice Now’ by Upchuck.

Turkey on Christmas Day?

Crayon: “Vegan option, please.”

Nico: “Turkey isn’t really a thing in Germany on
Christmas. Also, I don’t eat meat. Go vegan, friends.”

Which song would you play on New Year’s Eve
when the clock strikes midnight?

Crayon: “In Berlin, the fireworks situation at New Year’s
is out of hand, so you wouldn’t be able to hear anything
over the explosions

Nico: “I think I’ll be asleep by then.”

What can we expect from LOBSTERBOMB in 2026?

Crayon: “We will be touring a lot in the early part of the year, mainly in Germany
but perhaps a few international shows here and there. At some point, we will be
recharged and get back to making more songs, but we aren’t setting any timeframe
right now.”

Thank you very much Crayon, Nico and Vik for this interview.
May the road rise with Lobsterbomb.

LOBSTERBOMB – Riotious Pop-Punk Team From Berlin Get ‘OVERSTIMULATED’ On Their 2nd Album

7 October 2025

Band: LOBSTERBOMB
Who: Glamorous indie quartet from Berlin. They released
their pithy party debut album Look Out in 2023. You can
stream it here.

New album: OVERSTIMULATED
Their sophomore one. Produced and mixed by Karen Dhios.
It was recorded in the Berlin studio of Thomas Götz, drummer
of the German punk band Beatsteaks.

Lobsterbomb told TUTV about the album:” The album explores themes of self-discovery, emotional struggle, and the tension between chaos and control. The lyrics delve deep into moments of inner turmoil, clarity, and resilience.

At its core, the album is about facing life, exploring, and discovering something new about yourself and the world with each passing year. It reflects the dystopian reality we live in, a hypernormalized society in which we are constantly expected to function and look the other way.

‘Overstimulated’ is both a cry of protest and process of liberation: the desire to break free from the pressure of expectations and celebrate life’s simple pleasures—without closing our eyes to reality.

Musically, the band remains true to itself while simultaneously exploring new avenues. The characteristically cathartic, energetic sound has been further developed with new bassist Em Ritchie, and expanded with new sonic facets. The album was produced and mixed by Karen Dhios and was recorded in the Berlin studio of Thomas Götz (drummer of the German punk band Beatsteaks).

TUTV: Lobsterbomb serve a salvo of riff-roasting, pop-punk firecrackers starting with the three super-duper singles (Not Again / Falling / Overstimulated) to whip up the party, and along the way you’ll find another trio of knockouts that could easily have been singles too (Nighbird / Paranoia / Nothing To Lose).

Six singles out of 12 tracks. Not a daily thing. And don’t worry about the other songs. There’s not one dull moment on this record. There’s enough catching firepower to keep you in a hyperkinetic trance of perked up elation for the full 33 minutes.

Nico Rosch‘s temperamental riot grrrl vocality and screaming explosiveness are a vital
part of Lobsterbomb‘s sharp-cutting sonic boom. They fit each other as a warm-blooded glove, like a well-oiled sucker-punch team.

You’ll feel overwhelmingly overstimulated in the end. Damn, that feels good.
There’s always a Lobsterbomb booster at the end of the tunnel to face the
world in all its unpredictable twists. Top-drawer accomplishment.

Artist: BEDROOM JUNE
Who: Singer-songwriter from Hamburg, Germany who transforms personal fractures into delicate electronic pop songs that oscillate between vulnerability, alienation, and a quiet longing for closeness.

Track: DISTRACTED BY YOU
Piece from her New EP. It tells of inner vulnerability, the search for
connection, and small moments of clarity—all wrapped up in a warm,
electronic indie pop sound.

TUTV: Propelled by enrapturous bass reverberations, luminous synths and sultry vocals, this jagged jam takes you on a whirling ride. Trust me, you will be attracted, not distracted by this swift thrill. Startling stuff.

Artist: ROSIE STUART
Who: Restless Belgian singer-songwriter who writes raw songs
in stark contrasts: 100 percent black and white, with no room
for gray.

Track: VEGAN
Debut single from her
upcoming debut EP.

Rosie reveals her most vulnerable side, though an impenetrable wall shields her deepest longings. She carries an intense energy, is uncomfortably honest, and constantly balances between bravado and self-sabotage.”

TUTV: This exorcistic cry out gives you the creeps. Tension and danger in the air all
the way, fueled by Stuart‘s agitated vocals. No birds and bees here. Vegan resonates
like a wandering soul screaming in the darkness, hoping to get saved. Goosebumps.

Artist: ASSASUN
Who: Berlin-based dark-techno-wave artist
Alexander Donat (Vlimmer, Fir Cone Children, WHOLE)

“Sound-wise, you could imagine Assasun operates somewhere between irate Clipping, a parallel timeline of early Nine Inch Nails, and Sleaford Mods on a havocked, misanthropic hotel lobby techno party. In short: dense, raw, uncompromising.”

Track: POISONALAN
Opener from his 4th LP, named
Retrofate
. You can stream it here.

TUTV: I don’t how many hours Berlin has in a day, but I think it’s definitely more than in other countries as Alexander Donat‘s musical production with his 3 different projects is off the charts. Anyway, this dark-techno-wave stomper from his new LP is one to play out loud, while going berserk on a trampoline.

their debut album, Calculating The Angle Of Our Descent.

Track: ABOUT THE SUN

TUTV: The band swing your ears between a bewitching torch reverie
and a power pop melody. The process repeats itself a couple of times,
around Forgione‘s seductive voice. Riveting. Am I the only one who thinks

Track: YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE
Latest single from his debut album
A Grand Romantic Gesture,
released last February.

Billy tackles enduring a vicious break up, wading through the emotional
carnage that accompanies it and coming out the other side.”

TUTV: With his chirpy high-pitched voice, his jazzy swagger, and his songwriting
prowess, Fritzgerald takes you back to the 60s/70s for some Motown soul excitement. Sexual healing ambiance.

Artists: peach|melba
Who: Queer femme indie duo,
half Brighton and half Los Angeles.

Track: HAVE A LATTE
Their 4th of the year, more to come
every six weeks of the year.

pIm: “It’s a raucous anti-genocide anthem recorded and mixed by us and features our trademark duo vocals, oscillating between unsettling quiet and raucous chaos set to a Severance-costumed video, but filmed in a swimming pool, naturally.”

TUTV: This new drone sounds like a vintage, raw bass/drum pounding
uppercut from the late Steve Albini’s band Shellac. No arty-farty production,
nor special effects for these two punkettes. What you hear is what you get.

Have A Latte has a poignant, garage punk edge as if it were recorded in, eh,
a garage without tuning up the instruments. In the end, it’s the real, honest
sonic deal that matters.

Band: DOPAMINE FIX
Who: Fresh Irish indie duo who’s manifesto says a lot about them:
“With a nod to the Dadaists, we create Post Punk, Experimental and
Electronica which aims to unnerve, to disturb and to question.”

Track: WELCOME TO THE SHARKTANK
Debut single.

“The song erves as a record of how dysfunctional and broken our world is. This single is a soundtrack for the alienated and the awake, those treading water in a dystopia they never asked to enter.”

TUTV: Ominous tension hangs all over this feverish and foreboding psych jam incited
by angstful guitars. A sign of the times. Welcome To The Sharktank isn’t a song about the birds and the bees, it’s about today, about 2025 and the uncertain future. Anxious vocals amplify the inauspiciousness in the air and get out of control in the end. Scary reality as
we know it.

Artist: THURSTON MOORE
Who: The former Sonic Youth top dog.

Track: TEMPTATION INSIDE YOUR HEART

TUTV: The tireless Moore treats us with a cover of a song by
The Velvet Underground. Not a really famous one. It dates
back to 1968, but did come out much later, on a VU
compilation from 1985.

It’s a fooling around, riff-rotating VU ripper
spiced with Lou Reed‘s characteristic vocality.

LOBSTERBOMB Score Hattrick With Third Knockout Single Of The Year – Hear ‘FALLING’

10 September 2025

Band: LOBSTERBOMB
Who: Glamorous indie quartet from Berlin. They released
their pithy party debut album Look Out in 2023. You can
stream it here.

Track: FALLING

“‘Falling’ is a leap into the unknown: raw, emotional, and liberating. The song speaks of heartbreak, self-discovery, and the courage to let go of what no longer belongs to you. It’s honest, vulnerable, and yet full of hope for what’s to come. ‘Falling’ is a song of heartbreak
and hope sonically matched by grunge influenced guitars and soaring harmonies.”

TUTV: This is their 3rd single of the year and their 3rd consecutive knockout.
It’s called a hattrick in football. Falling gives you that glorious alive and kicking
buzz for its blistering 157 seconds.

Post-pop-punk that dynamizes your adrenalin production and energizes your
mind moods. There’s always a Lobsterbomb booster at the end of the tunnel.

It`s 17 just broke up with my man
Foggy thoughts I’m doing what I can
Are you good you sure you are OK
Why do you care two people parting ways
I keep falling falling
I keep bawling my eyes out
Let me dance come on just let me dance
Until I drop just want another chance
To free myself that’s all I really got
Oh Let me be come on just let be

I keep falling falling
I keep bawling my eyes out
I am you
Who knew what’s true
I’m here with you
Let’s go it’s new

Its melodic catchiness has irresistible written all over it. In a normal world this should
be a bloody big hit.

Track: SAME DISTANCE
Piece that should have been on their excellent 2024 album Temporary Light ,

TUTV: Yes, it would have been an unquestionable highlight on the album. But on or off it, it’s great to have this phantasmagoric pearl right now. A dream-in-motion beauty for the ears, mind, and soul. Made me immediately think of Brian Eno‘s ambient atmospherics. Wonderful. Truly wonderful.

The 5 fresh ones
TRACK BY TRACK

Band: IDLEWILD
Who: Scottish indie pop team.
1995–2010, 2013–present

Track: IT’S NOT THE FIRST TIME
Newest single from their 10th, self-titled
album, their first full length in 6 years.
It’ll hit the streets on 3 October.

New album artwork

“We’re looking back without being nostalgic — we were thinking about all the songs we’d made and the new songs we were making. For the first time we were referencing ourselves, not in a nostalgic way, in a positive, creative way, realising that we had a ‘sound’ and the songs we were writing should celebrate that. After it was all recorded and done, it felt fitting to simply title it ‘Idlewild’.”

Shiny sparkling guitars. Sparkling chorus. Melancholia in sonic motion.

Band: LOBSTERBOMB
Who: Glamorous indie quartet from Berlin. They released
their pithy party debut album Look Out in 2023. You can

Track: NIGHTBIRD

Crayon Jones (guitarist): “Nightbird is a song for insomniacs and people
who find their creative energy after the sun goes down. A song for when
the world around you is dark and quiet but your mind is racing with ideas.”

TUTV: Guitar pop dead? C’mon go away, or wait, stay and listen to this fizzy thrill,
it’ll change your mind in 3 minutes. Nightbird is poppy, sprightly, and zingy energized
by glowing guitars, beating drum/bass dynamics, and lively vocals. An ideal companion
for sleepless nights.

Band: POPTONES
Who: Psych guitar trio
from Copenhagen, Denmark.
.
Track: SAY SOMETHING NEW.

The song’s been created in a really unique way, improvised by chance
through drawing down UNO cards representing different sonic textures,
one of many avant-garde techniques the band employ across their
upcoming album Pure, out on September 26.

Pre-order info here.

TUTV: Poptones craft woozy psych-pop tunes like this one. Say Something New
is also a puzzling rollercoaster starting with all guitar cylinders on, then slowing
down and floating around with, dreamy vocals, for a short while only to turn up
the amps again. A mind-boggling affair.

Band: GHXST
Who: L.A.-based noise duo who released their debut album Admire in 2022. Known for their moody and existential doom-infused tracks, they have solidified their place in the music scene over the past decade. Originally emerging from the New York underground scene, have transitioned West, bringing their signature style with them.

Track: COSMIC

Press info: True to their doom-heavy roots, on the new single, GHXST’s sound floats
between grit and atmosphere, a meditation on weight, distance, and the quiet
pull of the infinite.

TUTV: Cosmic gets under your skin, slowly but surely. Quiet/Loud/Quiet/Loud. The foreboding slo-mo progression, pushed by industrial drones, scintillating guitars and ghostly vocals create an ill-omened karma. Well, it’s 2025 and the signs aren’t optimistic.

Isbell has reissued his 10-year-old album Something More Than Free
digitally and will be available on physical media on October 3. It includes
this previously unreleased track, a B-side for one of the LP’s singles.

TUTV: Fortunately this psychedelic, slide-guitar ripper didn’t go missing. It resonates like a swamp blues burner spiced with good old organ play and Isbell‘s firm voice. Chill-out cool.

“The song is essentially about people only wanting the sweet stuff in life, and sugar coating anything and everything that may be a difficult subject. We live in a society where social media is treated like the Holy Bible, simultaneously releasing dopamine hits, a highly addictive drug, when posting pictures for ‘instant gratification.”

TUTV: This happens when The Ultra Violets eat too much sugar. They pick up their instruments and go mental, producing mental hullabaloo for mental people, like
you and me. Roaring ripper. Flaming score.

Band: LOVINA FALLS
Who: The dark dream-pop project of Boston-based singer-songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist, and producer s Valerie Forgione. In 2023, they
released their debut album, Calculating The Angle Of Our Descent.

Track: LIGHT AND LOW

Forgione: “‘Light and Low’ is about recognizing that as time goes on, it’s ok to let go of old
and ‘historic thinking’ to create a new path through and out of the Thicket of Now. It’s about knowing that when things change, the path is not predestined. Change the change. Move with conviction but head gracefully into the unknown, light and low.”

Collage art by Lindsey Walker, design by Valerie Forgione

TUTV: Lovina Falls take you on a swift gothwavish ride from the get-go, propelled by a motorik bass riff, nervy drum hits, jittery tremelo riffs and poignant vocals. Fast-forward, without brakes nor breaks, speeding like a runaway train. Light And Low unfolds like a salvo of light flashes out of the dark, causing a rapid eye movement sensation. Intriguing, right? Absolutely. Don’t wait, get started.

Beth: “We’re living in a dark time, full of drama and barbarous tragedy.

Artists: peach|melba

half Brighton and half Los Angeles.

Track: FELL IN LOVE WITH GODX (SHE WAS REALLY FIT)
Their 2nd one, following trashy debut Worst Trimester.
More to follow every six weeks to come.

p|m: “We wrote and recorded it ourselves, delivered in our trademark double-team
deadpan vocal style, rhyming “80’s car” with “Californiarr”. This one has Arctic Monkeys
swagger and Mannequin Pussy edge, featuring a one-shot video in an iconic venue’s
bathroom.”

TUTV: Punk-pop spunky, sassy spirit, sharp-mouthed flair, dry humor, word spielerei, and utterly cool. That’s what p|m is about. This new non-stop drum-thumping tune zigzags left and right, forth and back flavored with slap-happy vocals. I’m quite sure that peach|melba will become your new favourite bathroom band.

New single: NOT AGAIN

TUTV: Blimey. Lobsterbomb return with an adrenalized missile, going fast-forward,

Got a problem but it’s solving itself
Look away and it’s now something else
Got all this wisdom but I got questions as well
I’ve got an answer but i’m not gonna tell
Oh no
Not again

I’ve got a reason but I don’t have a place
I’ve got potential but it’s going to waste
I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to change
Another day and again it’s the same
Oh no
Not again
Oh no

It’s good for me
It’s all for me
It’s good for me

Got a secret and its all for myself
Gonna keep it here all to myself
I’ve got some mystery, some pockets of gold
Hidden treasures never to be told
Oh no
Not again
Oh no

It’s good for me
It’s all for me
It’s good for me

Turn Up The Volume’s 5 BEST ALBUMS Of AUGUST 2023

1. ‘The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons’ by THE HIVES

TUTV: Expect a tsunami of Molotov cocktails, punk-o-rama riffage, and yell-along
refrains spit out by primal screamer Pele. No rest for the wicked. Beware, this explosive record can damage your speakers. On the other hand, it’s the ideal soundtrack for banging your poor head against a wall of your choice and/or jumping up and down like a madman/woman.

KEY SINGLE: Countdown To Shutdown

2. ‘The Poolest Of The Mall’ by SWIMWEAR DEPARTMENT

Band: SWIMWEAR DEPARTMENT
Who: 4 kooky indies from Houston.

“It’s their sophomore LP. Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Steve Christensen.
The 10 tracks discuss only two topics: swimming pools and shopping malls. Although
the themes initially appear whimsical or even trivial on the surface, Swimwear Department skilfully sculpts experiences laden with emotional depth and profundity.”

Learn more about the band, via this video.

TUTV: The summer is not over until it’s over. Enter Swimwear Department and their new jump-up-and-down pool party soundtrack. Expect bouncy, brisk, and bold stuff you can hip-and-hop to like a kangaroo on E. Think post-Devo-punk weirdness combined with rap-rant Beastie Boys lunacy translated in 10 instantly infectious tunes (except for coming down closer Memall). If you’re a punk surfer, this is your kind of stimulant to brave the waves.

They spice up all the excitement with schizo 70s-organ glow, non-stop pumping bass turbulence, steadfast drum hits, agitated guitar fragments and an expressive vocalist sneering a bit like The Fall‘s late legend Mark E. Smith used to do for a living. Frequently
all-together-now chants pop up, which you want to be a part of. Sounds like big fun, right? You betcha.

3. ‘Mommy’ by BE YOUR OWN PET

Nashville‘s inflammable garage rockers had some loud fun between 2004-2008,
vanished into oblivion afterward, but last year they couldn’t stop themselves from
coming back and starting to play an endless series of gigs ahead of their brand new
3rd LP, titled Mommy released last week.

TUTV: After 2 albums and 15 years (!) BYOP still have tons of vitality, pizzaz
and sinewy corkers to offer. Battle-axe frontwoman Pearl still has demons to
fight with, and I assure you, you don’t want to be one of them. 11 spunky cry-outs.
Combative, bad-tempered, sharp, raw and LOUD. They truly have a great mommy.

4. ‘Nostalgia’s Glass’ by THE UNDERGROUND YOUTH

Dyer about the LP: “The aim became to create a collection of songs that paid homage
to our back catalogue and attempted to dissect not only the positive but the negative
elements of nostalgia, primarily the romanticisation of the past – be it the politics of
a country, the controversial legacies of film and musical icons or the sentimental
idealisation of long dead toxic relationships.”

TUTV: To be honest, I needed several spins to get into the new TUY album and in
Craig Dyer‘s world. Of course, he’s the only one who knows exactly what happens in
his mind, in his soul and his heart. But as he said he looked back to times gone by.

Great/gratifying moments, bad/sad moments. I guess for so many of us, nostalgia
can be both depressing and heart-warming. Dyer opened the door to his past, that
evokes those mixed emotions.

His sombre vocals, the overall gloomy tone and slow, shadowy pace (except for
Another Country that sounds like a splendid tribute to The Velvet Underground of the
music feels like he got lost in a labyrinth of uncomfortable memories most of the time leading to a spellbinding and bone-chilling opus. Melancholic poetry in motion. You can
file Nostalgia’s Glass next to Nick Cave‘s 2016 mourning masterpiece Skeleton Tree.

A manic mixture of left/right punk uppercuts, garage glam swagger, and riot grrl dynamics, stoked up by roaring riffs, a frenetic bass/drum tandem and high-pitched vocals, think of Poly Sterene, Kathleen Hanna or Bonnie Bloomgarden. INTERVIEW – Look Out For Riotous Berlin Punk Trio LOBSTERBOMB And Their Barbed Wire Debut LP

After a series of stormy singles Berlin-based, turbulent trio LOBSTERBOMB released
their debut LP, titled LOOK OUT. A manic mixture of left/right punk uppercuts, garage
rock swagger, and riot grrl dynamics, stoked up by roaring riffs, a frenetic bass/drum tandem and high-pitched vocals, think of Poly Sterene, Kathleen Hanna or Bonnie
Bloomgarden
. All ingredients you need for a bonkers moshpit.

If you never heard of them read on as loud and clear vocalist/guitarist Crayon Jones
will tell us more about the band and their debut longplayer. But as usual, we start an interview with a slice of music. Open your ears and eyes for one of the album’s top cuts.

When and how did LOBSTERBOMB got together?

“We met via the instagram page ‘We formed a band’ which was run by the band Gurr.
It was a page where you can post handwritten notes looking for people to play with.

Once we connected we had a few practices together and then the pandemic hit.

So it took a while before we could really get going but we were
all super motivated to make some music and play some shows.”

What’s the story behind the band’s name?

“We can’t say exactly what it is, but we can
confirm it has nothing to do with the B-52s.”

Which track would you play to the people who never heard of you?

What About Never is our most recent single and it gives a pretty good idea
of what we are about. Lots of energy, personal lyrics and fun visuals.”

Your debut album is out. It’s titled LOOK OUT.
Who or what have we to look out for?

“It is both ‘Look Out, we are here!’ and also about our lyrics, which are quite
observational. We look out onto the world around us and write songs about
what we see and feel.”

How does it feel to have your first album on vinyl?

“It was definitely a little magical to listen to the test pressing
on vinyl for the first time.”

The LP’s image shows the band at its glamorous best. Do you want to express something about the band or your personal yourselves with your flamboyant
looks?

“There is no overall concept of our image, but we are all visually oriented people and find it fun to dress up. We each bring our own style rather than having a defined band uniform.”

Were all three of you involved in the writing/recording process?.

“Usually one of us will make a basic demo with the bones of the song,
but it doesn’t really develop into a full song until we play it together
and we all add something to it.”

Are all songs are in some way connected or do they all stand on their own?

“We wrote these songs over a long period of time so certain songs reflect different
times in our development as a band. For example No No No and Hitting The Wall are
among our oldest songs and have quite a raw and rocky feel, compared to What About Never, Gravitation or Dragonfly that are a bit more post-punky and have extra elements
like synths added.”

.
Were you listening to other music while writing the album?

“We all have a diverse taste in music. The playlists we listen to when driving
to shows are always a chaotic mix ranging from psychedelic to punk to pop.”

The album sounds as if it was recorded live
giving it a genuine raw/rough edge. Was it?

“We recorded it ourselves in our rehearsal room in Neukölln, rather than a fancy studio which is perhaps why it has a rawness to the sound, but we recorded each instrument separately rather than recording live.”

GRAVITATION is one of my fav tracks. What is
the song about and where was the video shot?

“It is about a moment when the universe seems to take control and connect you with another person. We shot the video with Unlost Films at Velodrom and Checkpoint Bravo in Berlin. We wanted locations that matched the 80s post punk vibe of the song that had some elements of brutalism and decay.”

What’s a LOBSTERBOMB gig like?

“We always try to make every show feel special and we love to connect with the audience. We want people to have fun, as it makes it even more enjoyable for us when the crowd is making noise and dancing.”

Which band would you love to tour with and why?

“We were already lucky to play with a lot of very cool bands such as Death Valley Girls, Pabst, Itchy and Laura Lee & the Jettes. A dream would be to play with Kathleen Hanna whether its with Bikini Kill or Le Tigre, we aren’t fussy!”

Suppose the album would be the soundtrack
for a movie, which want would it be?

The Barbie movie as it would have made the whole marketing
the album thing so much easier. We have plenty of pink outfits
in our closets already.”

What’s the band ultimate goal

“We just want to write songs, play shows and meet nice people really! That’s why we formed a band so we try to keep that in mind whenever the ‘work’ aspect of being in a band gets too much.”
