It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll But We Like It – ‘OOCHYA!’ By Welsh Darlings STEREOPHONICS

New longplayers

11 March 2022

Band: STEREOPHONICS
Who: Veteran rockers from Wales
Active: Since 1992 / 12 studio LPs
(new one included)

New album: OOCHYA!
Released: 4 March 2022 – order info here

Info: “The brand new studio album features 15 tracks. As Stereophonics celebrate
25 years as one of the UK’s most loved bands, with Oochya! Kelly Jones continues to
cement his place amongst the great British songwriters. Having now achieved seven
number 1 albums and 8.5 million albums sold in the UK alone, Stereophonics stand
as undeniable giants of British Music.”

The Guardian says: “As ever, the best songs hit a reliably sweet spot between the
emotional and the anthemic. They’re past their best nowadays, but this is a decent
effort after a quarter of a century.”
Score: 3/5.

Turn Up The Volume: A pretty vivid mix of muscled jackhammers and power ballads. Nothing new but nothing bad. It’s only rock’ n roll but we like it, don’t we? Well, I do.

Canadian Indie Pop Romantics BASEMENT REVOLVER Enrapture With 2nd Album ‘EMBODY’

New released longplayers

10 March 2022

Band: BASEMENT REVOLVER
Who: Indie outfit crafting both noisy and graceful shoegaze-esque
tracks out of their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario since 2016

“Their sophomore LP, Embody, is explicit about these new ideas and new thoughts,
addressing them with a deeper sound and crisper production to adroitly express the
complexity of the world. It is an album of friendship, of working out identity together and making deeply personal art. Coming out in the middle of pandemic means that embodiment has to take new forms, and this album is one of those ways forward. This record, with its complex sonic landscape, sometimes lush and sometimes stark, is of a piece with their earlier work, but it’s deeper and more self-aware. Embody is the sound of freedom, especially in the midst of such pain, both locally and globally. Trading tracks virtually, missing the camaraderie of weekly rehearsals, and the isolation of that means that the album is full of hopeful waiting: to tour, of course, but also to engage these new understandings together, on the road.”

Turn Up The Volume: The most striking instrument on the album is the angelic voice of songwriter Chrisy Hurn. Just phenomenal. To my avid ears, she may join the female vocal likes of stars such as Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, The Sundays’ Harriet Wheeler, Belly‘s Tanya Donelly, and Mazzy Star‘s Hope Sandoval. Yes that good, that magical. Check ballad beauties Slow / Blackhole / Storm / Tired and my two favorites Skin and Long Way and you’ll hear why Chrisy’s voice is the band’s shining star. And when they rock out (Be Okay / Dissolve / Tunnel Vision) multi-layered shoegaze guitars take over and create a burning wall-of-sound that blows you away.

Overall this high-quality second LP encourages young people to be confident to be themselves, to be proud of who they are, and proud of how they look. It’s a vulnerable
and heartwarming, a passional and human, a tender and longing piece of work for heart and soul. Hats off.

New Albums – A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS Next Month With 6th Longplayer ‘SEE THROUGH YOU’

22 January 2022

Band: A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS
Who: Infamous psych-noiseniks from Brooklyn, NY
led by founder/mastermind Oliver Ackermann
Active: Since 2003 / 6 LPs (new one included)

New album: SEE THROUGH YOU
Out: 4th February via Dedstrange Records

Info (via Rough Trade): “A Place to Bury Strangers defund post-punk orthodoxy with the most audacious and varied songwriting of their career on their sixth album, See Through You, out on Oliver Ackermann’s label, Dedstrange. Following up on 2021’s highly acclaimed Hologram EP delivers an overclocked set of futuristic electronic punk music encoded with punishing industrial rhythms, swirling voltage-starved guitars and unclassifiable auditory annihilation. Across thirteen tracks recorded in seclusion throughout the nihilistic absurdity of the coronavirus pandemic, See Through You is proof-positive that the group hailed as “The Loudest Band in New York” is still finding new ways to push the needle deeper in the red.”

New Albums 2022 – ‘EVERYTHING WAS FOREVER’ By (British) Anthemic Rockers SEA POWER

19 January 2022

Band: SEA POWER (Reading/Brighton, UK)

Who: Socially engaged indie pop-rockers who started their journey back in 2003.
In the very beginning, they operated as British Air Power, but changed it quickly to
British Sea Power. But last summer the band announced another name change,
dropping ‘British‘.

(photo by Turn Up The Volume)

Why? They told The Guardian: “It was the combination of “British” and “Power” that
no longer worked for us. We imagined a youngster at a European festival in the 21st
century looking at the programme and seeing a band name including the word “Hungarian”
or “Russian” alongside “Power”. It would likely send your mind in a certain direction – quite possibly to the isolationist, adversarial nationalism that has recently taken a hold around the world. We’ve always wanted to be an internationalist band – as heralded in our track Waving Flags, a song of pan-European idealism.”

Along came the news of a new longplayer – their seventh full length – five years after
the sterling The Dancers Inherit The Party, which, in a normal world, would have been
a massive hit LP. Anthemic tunes, rich sound, sharp observations on politics, on our neglected environment, on people’s crumbling togetherness, and on life in general…
oh, before I forget this: go see them play live if you have the opportunity, and you’ll
have a glowing experience. Trust me, I saw them several times.

The new one, titled EVERYTHING WAS FOREVER
lands on 11 February. Pre-order info here.
