NIRVANA Released Debut Album ‘BLEACH’ 35 Yeasr Ago Today
Back in time
15 June 2024
The album that millions of NIRVANA fans only were aware of after the iconic
trio conquered the world with Nevermind was released 35 years ago today, on
15 June 1989.
Initially BLEACH sold 40.000 copies (not that bad
for a debut) but went platinum after Nevermind.
Bleach was/is NIRVANA at its we-do-what-the-fuck-we-want-to-do record without anybody’s interference whatsoever. Total freedom. Mind you, Nevermind and In Utero
had way much better songs and Garbage‘s Butch Vig knew perfectly well how to keep
the band’s riotous punk spirit intact on those masterpieces, despite the pressure of major
label Geffen Records who signed them after Bleach but it’s an authentic document of what Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl were about before the success/money came in.
AllMusic/Stephen Thomas Erlewine: “Cut for about 600 dollars in Jack Endino’s studio over just a matter of days, this captures Nirvana at a formative stage, still indebted to the murk that became known as grunge, yet not quite finding their voice as songwriters… Bleach is more than a historical curiosity since it does have its share of great songs, but it isn’t a lost classic — it’s a debut from a band that shows potential but haven’t yet achieved it.”
