Who: The moniker for Toronto‘s alternative
artist and producer Noah Mroueh.

Track: SIT

Mroueh: “Politics, racism, sexism, social media, people constantly arguing,
the news, algorithms, It feels like there’s almost no space to just think for
yourself anymore. ‘SIT’ came out of that frustration.”

“In a world that constantly demands our attention and reaction, choosing to stop,
sit still and think for yourself can be the most radical thing you do. For me, sitting
becomes an act of rebellion.”

TUTV: If your feet don’t react, your pelvis doesn’t start shaking, and your head doesn’t go forth and back to this firm footstomper you need to change your meds and/or consult a shrink. This bass/drum motorized riff banger rotates on and on. Ark Identity moves and grooves with funky panacherie.

This is the sort of enlivening tune that makes you jump out of bed, makes you dance around your kitchen table, and makes you leave your house for a brisk walk and a sit in the park, following your instincts, feeling confident and determined to make your own mark, regardless of what others think.

Again, we experience that galvanizing music
can resuscitate yout numb psyche.

THE PRETTY GRAVES – Connecticut Rockers Back To The Future With Psych Stomper ‘BLUEBIRD’

Band: THE PRETTY GRAVES
Who: Indie art–rock troubadours from Connecticut.
They craft a potent mix of raw emotion, soul-baring
lyricism, fuzzed-out guitars, and pure melodies.

Last May they released their eponymous debut album. Check it out here.

And they’re not done yet. On October 30th, they’ll launch Tapes & Demos via cassette and digital. A collection of ten tracks left over from the foursome’s heralded debut album, and like all great rock and roll bands, this striking batch of b-sides, unfinished demos, and live favorites holds up as a dynamite record on its own merit.

Christopher M. Listorti: “‘Bluebird’ is about an encounter I had with a bluebird that
lived outside on my porch. I would bump into him while out on my porch, day or night.
This encounter entwined with what I was going through at the time without going into
great detail. The bluebird can symbolize happiness, hope, and being grounded,
which the dude on my porch inspired for me.”

TUTV: The Pretty Graves flew back to the swinging 60s, bought records by The Flamin’ Groovies, The Sonics, and The Velvet Underground, then came back to the present, went straight to the studio, and recorded psychedelic, piano-spiced boogie stomper Bluebird, stimulated by jangly guitars, tambourines, bopping dynamics, and hearty vocals.

Well, those were the images and sounds that popped up in my head halfway through my first listen. Yes, TPG have your ears’ attention right away. And you surely know where to find the repeat button.

for about 10 years, then took a break to return last year under
their new moniker.

TUTV: I know Frank and Nancy Sinatra, but so far Cowboy Sinatra is a stranger to me,
but not for long. He sounds very punked-up, infuriated, and gloriously bonkers. Magazines remind me of British punk psychos Soft Play (who started out as Slaves), who also have an avid appetite for slam-bang drums, paranoid guitars, lots of spitting and sneering, and uppercut choruses. Pleased to meet you, cowboy.

VELVET JESUS – Belgian Guitar Pop Musers Allure With New Shadowy Single ‘JUST A PREDATOR’

Who: Belgian dream pop-rock team from Leuven.
FFO: David Sylvian,  Calexico, and Isbells.

They released their debut album Qatar in 2024.

Track: JUST A PREDATOR
Their newest single.

The song was co-written with Australian
musician and producer Matt Swanton.

It’s about the toxic relationship between a man and a woman,
who nevertheless stay together out of habit, fear, and laziness.

TUTV: My ears hear a kind of restlessness and stress sonically and vocally, expressing
the core of a toxic relationship, the song’s topic. My ears also hear Wilco echoes with rich arrangements and layered orchestrations, while a drum/bass groove controls the pace all the way.

Halfway there’s a dark moment of near-collapse but expressive guitars and subtle harmonies restart the shadowy jam. Give a couple of listens. It’s a magnetic tune to
go back to.

USI ES & WHOLES – From A Whisper To A Scream In ‘BERLIN’

Artist: USI ES
Who: The musical moniker of Belgian singer-songwriter Ester Weemaes. In her attic studio, she interweaves synths and samples with her distinctive, dark voice. Her music balances between darkness and dreaminess, feeling like a blanket wrapped around you: soft yet heavy, with frayed edges.

She released her emotive debut album SideQuest last February.

Usi Es‘s murder-ballad approach on Berlin has been inspired by the migration history
of her Moluccan family, via New Guinea to the Netherlands. Uprooted twice, each time
due to circumstances beyond their control.

TUTV: Her piano-touching version is a poignant, heart-rending and vulnerable one with
Es‘ near-whispering, film-noir voice upfront, joined by Wholes frontman Wolf Vanwymeersch‘ deep vocals on the spine-tingling twilight chorus. Horripilation in the dark.

Band: WHOLES
Who: Belgian raucous noise outfit led by musical chameleon Wolf Vanwymeersch,
who played with several bands before producing pop, rock post-punk and
sludge metal.

They released their dark-noise debut album A Mass In the Water.

Their Berlin delivery balances on the edge of collapse, “You’re Berlin on the border of
falling down / In a Swiss bank that has sold your life”, and sketches a world in which capitalist systems alienate us from one another while simultaneously cultivating a desire for more.

TUTV: Amps up, guitars up, gloom and doom up. The Apocalypse is just around the corner, and Wholes have obviously seen flashes of it. Their view on these collapsing times causes, by now familiar goosebumps reflections.

Who: A multidisciplinary project, based in Gothenburg, Sweden in which music and video
art coexist within a world that feels equally threatening and seductive. The project’s music is rooted in heavy, experimental rock but refuses to settle into expectation.

They have released two albums so far.
