PJ HARVEY Covers Traditional American Folk Song ‘RUN ON (God’s Gonna Cut You Down)

RUN ON also known as GOD’S GONNA CUT YOU DOWN is an old
American folk traditional about how you can’t escape God’s wrath.

Black gospel/spiritual band The Golden State Quartet released the first
known version back in 1946. Afterward, a cast of superstars including Elvis
Presley, Odetta, Johnny Cash, and many more covered the song.

Now it’s PJ HARVEY‘s turn. She recorded her version for the soundtrack
of Bad Sisters, a black comedy/thriller series running on Apple TV+.

Harvey turned the traditional into a vintage Harvey song.

On 4 November PJ HARVEY‘s record label launches a giant
boxset of B-SIDES, DEMOS & RARITIES containing 6LPs/3CDs

This 59-track collection spans decades, with most of the songs previously
unavailable physically or digitally, and 14 tracks either previously unreleased
or in previously unreleased versions. It’s the final release in her reissue program.

PJ HARVEY Covers LEONARD COHEN

Fabulous songstress PJ HARVEY shared her cover
of the LEONARD COHEN musing WHO BY FIRE.

It’ll feature on the soundtrack for a new dark
comedy/thriller series, named Bad Sisters
for Apple TV+

The late genial Cohen wrote/recorded the song in
1974 for his album New Skin for the Old Ceremony.

PJ Harvey: “It was a very enjoyable day spent recording the version of Leonard Cohen’s
“Who By Fire” for Bad Sisters. I had spoken to Sharon Horgan in advance of the recording session, so I understood why she felt the song’s lyric was so perfect for the series, but also understood what nuances of Leonard’s performance she most loved, and therefore what
to try and recapture but in my own way.”

DAVE GAHAN And His SOULSAVERS On A High When Covering PJ HARVEY On TV

DAVE GAHAN, frontman of melodramatic darkwave popstars
Depeche Mode released a covers album, entitled Imposter last
year along with his SOULSAVERS.

Last weekend they were invited on the American TV Show Fallon
and astounded with a cover of a PJ Harvey song The Desperate
Kingdom Of Love. A magnetic ballad from her sixth album
Uh Huh Her (2004).

Gahan‘s take is splendiferous. He goes on a high along with
his bewitching performance. Tremendous version executed
with fervor and ardor.
