Scottish romantic indies THE TWILIGHT SAD have been
around for a while, actually, since 2003. So far they have
released (only) 5 longplayers.
Despite a hiatus here and there, they always
came back and they’re still active to this day.
In the past they went on several tours with goth greats The Cure on several occasions. That’s when Robert Smith
became a huge fan.
They’re back now with their first single in 6 years.
It’s called WAITING FOR THE TELEPHONE CALL
and Robert Smith plays guitar on it.
James Graham (bandleader) about the song: “Waiting For The Phone Call” is about
grief, love, and mental illness. These things took over my life, and I became ill. I lost the
person most important to me in one of the cruelest ways. I’ve always used writing as a
method of processing and coping with my emotions.
The past seven years had been both the escape and the opportunity to process and try and make sense of life. We’ve all been waiting on a phone call that can change our lives at some point. This unfortunately focuses on a phone call that you never want to have.”
It’s an intense rocker.
Dark, gloomy, and liberating.
Bone-chilling belter.
THE CURE, named Malice (1976–1977) and Easy Cure (1977–1978)
before they became the band we all know scored multiple hits in
the past.
One of them IN BETWEEN DAYS (more than 221 million streams
on Spotify). It was released 40 years ago today, on 15 July 1985.
It featured on their LP The Head On The Door.
It was an international success (except in
America where it only got to No. 99).
In the UK, it was their 4th consecutive Top 20 hit. It was also
a Top 20 hit in Australia and New Zealand and several European
countries.
John Leland of Spin Magazine said, “It has the bittersweet feel of
a New Order record, with a hyperstrummed acoustic guitar for depth.
The boys even offer a genuine glimmer of hope, and the tune fairly
breezes by on its own momentum.”
Band: THE GLOVE Who: A short-lived project conceived by Robert Smith (The Cure‘s
frontman and Steven Severin (guitarist from Siouxsie and the Banshees)
with Jeanette Landray on vocals.
Now Smith told NME about one of the upcoming longplayers: “It has one song of grief on it which didn’t make it onto this album, which is a very, very old song which we’ve been playing for a long, long time called ‘It Can Never Be the Same’. And I think that this next album will have that song on because I think it’s about time. It used to be called ‘Christmas Without You’. “When I first wrote it, it was about my mum dying, but it’s mutated over the years and that’s actually turned into a really powerful live song. That would probably make it on.”
The song featured on 40 Live: Curætion-25 + Anniversary.
A 2019 box set including 2 DVDs/2 Blu-rays) and 4 CDs, with
live recordings from their 40-year anniversatry shows in 2018.
Last month, THE CURE released their 1st longplayer in 16 years. Songs Of A Lost World. A magnificent magnum opus. One of their
very best ever and a big contender for best one of 2024.
Now, their Goth maestro ROBERT SMITH confirmed the rumors
of more new Cure music to come. Not one, but two albums.
Smith: “This ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ album is a really emotional piece of work
and the companion piece, it’s not quite as dark but it explores other subjects a
little bit more.”
“The third one is very odd, actually. I haven’t finished the words to that one because
my headspace has been much more focused on performing these ones. I don’t really
want it to end because it’s been so good. The reaction to the new music has been so,
so great. It’s been really lovely to feel people giving us all the love.”
This month Uncut Magazine (British music monthly) delves into the past,
present and future of Goth titans THE CURE with their orchestrator Robert
Smith who’s all over the Internet lately as the band will release their 1st LP,
called Songs Of A Lost World in 16 years on November 1st. So far these are
the two tasters.
