Seminal punk-Goth legends SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES have
a new compilation named ALL SOULS out. The project is curated
by the band’s spellbinding voice/face SIOUXSIE SIOUX. It collates
classic tracks and rarities.

Described as ‘an Autumnal celebration‘, the tracks have been re-mastered
at half speed at Abbey Road with Sioux overseeing the process. The collection
features new and unique artwork picked by Sioux.

Somehow, a bold assurance of intention has met with a hunger for experimenting with sound to expand an already formidable group of songs into pure, open-minded ambiguity. The flesh of the song will balloon out or contort into unimaginable patterns, indecipherable echoes volley between the walls of the recording, glassy, splintered tones pierce the luxuriant sheen of the mix. Repeated listens trick the sense of balance; tremendous risks are taken.”

Turn Up The Volume!: their most mystifying and compelling album ever to
my fan ears. Siouxsie became the superior queen of gothic grandeur and went
with the fabulous Banshees (including the late, great guitarist John McGeoch) on
a mind-boggling crusade.

Susan Janet Ballion, best known of course as SIOUXSIE SIOUX
the voice and face of her band The Banshees was born on
27 May 1957 in London.

Happy 65 to the Goth queen of punk. One of the most
charismatic and drop-dead gorgeous rock stars ever.

With The Banshees she recorded/released 11 studio albums.
With her husband Budgie, she made two LPs under the moniker
of The Creatures. And in 2007 she released her only criminally
underrated, solo longplayer Mantaray.

1.’Nebraska’ by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Released: 30 September 1982 – his 5th LP
Charts: #3 in the US and in the UK

Pitchfork: “To put on Nebraska and hear its world of
echo is to enter a dream. As Bruce Springsteen’s songs go,
these are very good ones, but their true meaning came out
in the presentation. It’s an essential record in the history
of home recording“. Score: 5/5.

TUTV: Minimal sound, maximal effect.

The band’s second and final LP

AllMusic: “Scuzzy masterpiece, its art/psych/blues/punk
fusion taken to at times outrageous heights. Nearly every
tune is a Party classic one way or another.” Score: 3/5.

TUTV: The BP accomplished its mission: self-destruction.
After this schizophrenic blast, they went down with
a clashing crash.

4. ‘Miami’ by THE GUN CLUB

Released: 20 September 1982 – second LP
Produced by Blondie’s Chris Stein

AllMusic: “Miami was given a rough go when it was issued for
its production. But in the bird’s-eye view of history its songs stack
up, track for track, with Fire of Love and continue to echo well
into this long good night.” Score: 4.5.

Released: June 1981 – 40 years ago

Steve Severin (guitarist/producer): “Juju was the first time we’d made a “concept”
album that drew on darker elements. It wasn’t pre-planned, but, as we were writing, we saw a definite thread running through the songs, almost a narrative to the album as a whole”.

AllMusic said: “The upfront intensity of Juju probably isn’t matched anywhere else in the catalog of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Thanks to its killer singles, unrelenting force, and invigorating dynamics, Juju is a post-punk classic.” Full review here. Score: 4/5.
