The SMASHING PUMPKINS unleashed two new pieces a few
weeks ago: ‘Cyr’ and ‘The Colour Of Love‘ (listen below).
Just now the band has announced that a new double LP titled CYR will
see the day of light on 27 November. The LP is produced by Billy Corgan
and features Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and Jeff Schroeder.
SMASHING PUMPKINS just announced a new album, their 11th, featuring Billy
Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and Jeff Schroeder. No release date so far
but the band surprised us with two new songs, CRY and THE COLOUR OF LOVE.
“‘Cry‘ is dystopic folly. One soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop
of shifting loyalties and sped up time. To me it stands as both hopeful and dismissive
of what is and isn’t possible with faith” says general Billy Corgan. It’s an unexpected
synth-driven, poppy, dancey and catchy piece.
On The Colour Of Love synths are also dominant, although this cut rocks more than ‘Cry’.
Before starting their arena-sized comeback tour SMASHING PUMPKINS played the
small Troubadour venue in Los Angeles on 27 June. The band just released a video of the live version of new single SOLARA as played that night. Smoking stuff it is! Catch the fire right here…
Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…
2 June 2018
Band: SMASHING PUMPKINS
Album: ADORE
Released: 2 June 1998 – 20 years ago
ROLLING STONE wrote: “Imagine that Bruce Springsteen had released his stark
‘Nebraska’ after the towering ‘Born In The U.S.A.’ For Corgan, ‘Adore’ represents a
deflating of expectations even as it broadens the boundaries of his band. If the
Pumpkins seemed to be turning into stadium-rock behemoths on their last tour,
the new album presents Corgan, bassist D’Arcy and guitarist James Iha as pop
changelings who are bolder, quirkier and more versatile than anyone may have
imagined.” Full review here – Score: 3.5/5
TURN UP THE VOLUME says: “Instead of copying double cd bestseller ‘Mellon
Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ frontman Billy Corgan went for a softer, more
reflective and more sensitive approach to deal with his demons. ‘Adore’ is
an underrated work of vulnerable profoundness.”
