THE DAMNED Release Covers Album ‘NOT LIKE ANYBODY ELSE’ To The Memory Of Their Late Original Guitarist BRIAN JAMES

26 January 2026

London’s punk oldtimers THE DAMNED
celebrate their 50th birthday this year.
50? Time storms forward mercilessly.

Their debut LP Damned Damned Damned from 1977
still is one of the best punk albums ever, in my book.

They now have a new one out, named NOT LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE.
Their 13th longplayer. One with nothing but covers of 60/70s pop songs.

It’s a deeply personal and celebratory record to the memory
of co-founder/guitarist and musical architect Brian James,
who passed away on 6th March of last year.

The LP closes with a powerful farewell. The Rolling Stones‘ 1965 cracker ‘The Last Time‘, featuring Brian James himself, taken from his final live performance with The Damned in 2022 in London.”

TUTV: Expect covers of songs by Pink Floyd, The Stones, Lovin’ Spoonful, The Kinks,
The Creation, The Stooges, The Yardbirds, The Weeds, and a couple of others. The fact
that the record is a tribute to the late Brian Jones is the main message here. Kudos
to them for doing this. For me, after two spins, I went back to that supersonic debut LP.

IMAGE(S) OF THE DAY – Old Punk Roses THE DAMNED Did It Neat In Belgium

9 August 2025

Last Monday was retro punk day at Lokerse Feesten – Belgium with Irish heroes
The Undertones, the fantabulous and, imperishable Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols featuring rattlesnake Frank Carter and British punk trailblazers THE DAMNED.

The latter were the first UK punk band to release a single, and album and touring the US.
Their 1977 debut LP Damned Damned Damned still is one of the best punk longplayers ever, in my book. It featured several blitzkrieg bullets such as New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Stab Your Back and Born To Kill.

They’re still smashing things up with 3 of the 4 original members: singer Dave Vanian, guitarist Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies. Although they played on automatic pilot, the hits went down a storm. Hail hail!

Legendary THE DAMNED Guitarist BRIAN JAMES Passed Away Aged 70

9 March 2025

Cover debut LP – Brian James on the right

Last Thursday the brill guitarist BRIAN JAMES who co-founded the legendary proto-punk band THE DAMNED in 1976, has passed away, aged 70. No cause of death was revealed.

He was the driving and songwriting force of the group. He made 2 albums – Damned Damned Damned and Music For Your Pleasure with them and already left at the end
of 1977.

Afterward he kept on playing with different acts and big names such as badass
Iggy Pop, Blondie’s Clem Burke, MC5’s Wayne Kramer, The Police’s Stewart Copeland
and others.

He wrote the very first British punk song (James never want to label what
they did was punk) with the smashing Damned‘s debut single NEW ROSE.

Flamboyant Damned bassist/guitarist Captain
Sensible
posted this message on his social media.

Brian James Story

THE DAMNED – From Blistering Hot To Boring Cold And Back At LOKERSE FEESTEN In BELGIUM

5 August 2024

London‘s legendary punks THE DAMNED are smashing things up since 1976 and have no intention whatsoever to call it quits. They’re those kinds of musicians who would go insane when they have to stay home, and get endlessly bored with painting their fence, mow the grass, work in their garden etc.

Last night they played, with 3 heroes of the original line-up (drummer Rat Scabies, guitarist Captain Sensible and frontman Dave Vanian) at Lokerse Feesten in Belgium. Within an hour they went from blistering hot to boring cold and back.

Blistering hot with roasting renditions of golden oldies New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Love Song and Eloise. Boring cold with lesser known tracks that just didn’t work out to get the crowd afire, and then Captain Sensible losing himself in totally boring guitar solos. Guitar solos? Wasn’t punk invended to get rid of macho guitars solos and dinosaur rock? I thought so.

Set opener

Of course, the die-hard fans loved it, as well as they did like the beers. Good for them. Unfortunately The Damned sounded mostly as a cover band of their own. Glorious past? YES. Glorious present? NO.

Maybe they should smash it all up for good.
