Promote This! DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED (1977)
24 July 2023
Brit-punk gunslingers THE DAMNED were the first punk band to release an LP.
The album titled DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED was produced by Nick Lowe
and released by legendary indie label Stiff Records, on 18 February 1977.
Brian James (songwriter/guitarist) about the messy album cover: “That was
organised by this photographer called Peter Kodick, Stiff Records had assigned him
to do the thing. They thought it was a jolly wheeze to surprise us with a few cream
cakes, little knowing that we would relish it, get into to it and enjoy the whole
experience”.
Captain Sensible bassist: “I had more pie on my face than any of the other buggers
and on the back of the sleeve I had my back to the picture, so I went down a photo booth
and got some pictures, cut one out and said ‘put that on there’ so I would have something
to show my relatives, because I didn’t think we’d be invited to make another album.”
The still unanswered question is: did your sister like it?

Waking Up With… A Damned Rose
Works faster than caffeine
I got a feeling inside of me
It’s kind of strange like a stormy sea
I don’t know why I don’t know why
I guess these things have got to be
I gotta new rose I got it good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can’t stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town
See the sun see the sun it shines
Don’t get too close or it’ll burn your eyes
Don’t you run away that way
You can come back another day
I got a new rose I got it good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can’t stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town
I never thought this could happen to me
This is strange why should it be
I don’t deserve somebody this great
I’d better go or it’ll be too late
I got a feeling inside of me
It’s kind of strange like a stormy sea
I don’t know why I don’t know why
I guess these things have got to be
I got a new rose I got her good
Guess I knew that I always would
I can’t stop to mess around
I got a brand new rose in town

Only for your eyes
Band: THE DAMNED
Who: Infamous London punks who jumped on the scene in 1976 with the by now legendary line-up featuring singer Dave Vanian (David Lett), bassist Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns), guitarist Brian James (Brian Robertson) and Rat Scabies (Christopher Millar).
Artwork: Cover of their fifth LP STRAWBERRIES
released 40 years ago this year (15 October 1982).
Dave Vanian (frontman): “We were playing a lot of new material, and we had an audience that didn’t want to hear about anything, they just wanted to hear “Neat Neat Neat” and “New Rose,” nothing else. And they wanted to just smash everything. And they weren’t interested in hearing music at all. So at one point, I turned around and said, ‘It’s like giving strawberries to
a fucking pig, this gig, you know?’ And that stuck in our minds, and we used it”.
