SUEDE – Then And Now

17 February 2025

Legendary English music weekly Melody Maker named London’s fresh glam and glitter
outfit SUEDE, fronted by the charismatic androgyne Brett Anderson, the best new band
in Britain in April 1992, a month before they released their debut single THE DROWNERS,
a first sign of alt-indie pop bliss.

A year later, Suede showed why MM was absolutely right when they
shared their astonishing Self-Titled Debut LP with the world.

After their 2nd masterstroke (even better than their debut) DOG MAN STAR, musical orchestrator and guitarist Bernard Butler left but it didn’t break up the band. On the contrary, Suede survived with swirling style and vivid verve.

They released 7 more albums (from okay ones to a couple of great ones)
so far with Autofication as their most recent one. It came out in 2022.

Classic Clips – Video For Debut Single ‘DROWNERS’ By Glam Heroes SUEDE 30 Years Ago

2 September 2023

I guess London‘s glam rock idols SUEDE
(named The London Suede in the US) don’t
need an introduction anymore.

They made a huge instant impact with their self-titled debut LP
released 30 years ago last March. And Brett Anderson and Co still
kick ass. Their 2022 LP Autofiction was a veteran triumph.

Legendary British music weekly Melody Maker named Suede the
best band in Britain
even before they had their debut single out

To celebrate the anniversary, that debut album got a deluxe treatment
and their debut single THE DROWNERS (also on the LP) was re-mastered
and shared last February.

Have a look.

SUEDE Released Glamorous Debut Album 25 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

27 March 2018

ARTIST: SUEDE

ALBUM: SUEDE – debut LP

RELEASED: 29 March 1993 – 25 years ago

BBC MUSIC wrote: “Feted as the ‘best new band in Britain’ before they’d even released a single, Suede must surely be the one band of the Britpop pack who had to endure the most fallout from press. Yet, they survived. A large amount of this was because their debut album actually did live up to the noise. To be fair ‘Suede’ does carry its influences on its sleeve, but this was 1993 and post-modernism was the flavour du jour anyway. Suede’s main sources were Bowie and the Smiths. But the band had enough chutzpah and originality to weather the comparisons with ease. Bernard Butler’s awesome technique was the ace in the pack. Propelling three-minute bursts of pop perfection like “Metal Mickey” and “The Drowners” into the singles charts, the bands’ sham-glam reeked of a new kind of decadence, laced with black humour. The key text here is “Animal Nitrate”. Despite its punning title it’s a thrill-seeking slice of cynicism that perfectly summed up what it was like to be young and chemically imbalanced in the nation’s capital at the time. This was a foreshadow of Blair’s Britain. The way it sold (the fastest selling album of all time and straight in at number one) showed that the public not only believed the hype, they wanted it. All wrapped in androgyny and attitude, Suede delivered everything that we’d hoped for and more. Their fortunes were never to be as good again.”

TURN UP THE VOLUME says: Suede’s debut LP is their 2nd best next to magnum opus ‘Dog Man Star’. A fully loaded glam rollercoaster filled with a flashing quartet of four stunning singles and neo-romantic ballads. Exciting ride from start to finish.

THREE HIGHLIGHTS: Metal Micky / Animal Nitrate / The Drowners

* METAL MICKY

* ANIMAL NITRATE

SUEDE – Debut Single ‘THE DROWNERS’ Released 25 Years Ago…

When timeless in sound and vision…

‘The Drowners’ by SUEDE

After a bad start with Justine Frischmann on guitar – who came up with the band’s name and left frontman Brett Anderson and the group very soon for Blur‘s leader Damon Albarn, amazing guitarist Bernard Butler joined SUEDE and teamed up with Anderson to write the songs. And how! They appeared on the front cover of the former English magazine Melody Maker labeled as ‘The Best New Band In Britain‘ (1992) before they even released one note. record. The sudden press euphoria was based on their fresh and buzzing approach of pop music as well as their flashing charisma and sonic magnetism at gigs…

No more Madchester ecstasy, no more American macho grunge. Here was an incredibly ambitious, shiny and creative band with a different sound and a vibrant presence: sensual, adventurous, sexually ambiguous, romantic and gloomy at the same time. Oh yes, indeed, they were definitely inspired by their hero David Bowie and his provocative glam persona. Twenty-five years ago – 11 May 1992 – they released their debut single THE DROWNERS. The beginning of a new era, called Britpop, the rest is history…

Won’t someone give me a gun?
oh well it’s for my brother
well he writes the line wrote down my spine
It says “Oh do you believe in love there?”

So slow down, slow down, you’re taking me over
And so we drown, sir we drown, stop taking me over

Won’t someone give me some fun?
(and as the skin flies all around us)
We kiss in his room to a popular tune
Oh, real drowners

slow down, slow down, you’re taking me over
And so we drown, sir we drown,
stop takin’ me over!
