THE MOUNTAIN GOATS Still Shine After All These Years – Hear Their Brand New Topnotch Album Here

8 November 2025

Californian veteran rockers THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, conducted by singer/songwriter/musical mastermind and only original member
John Darnielle, are playing around for more than 3 decades, actually
since 1991.

They just released their 23rd LP, named THROUGH THIS
FIRE ACROSS FROM PETER BALKAN
(eh, come again?)

Paste Magazine says: “John Darnielle trades the lo-fi confessional for high tragedy,
finding transcendence—albeit a touch of distance, in the performance of survival. A
record that dramatizes collapse, but, for better or for worse, never quite gives in to it.

It’s gorgeous, exacting, and ultimately cyclical, much like theater itself, where
death is just the cue for the lights to come back up.” Full review here.

TUTV: Hats off to singer-songwriter John Darnielle. Coming up, after 34 years
and 22 albums, with this new high-quality record is remarkable. His love for music
isn’t reduced whatsoever. Not one dull moment here. Darnielle‘s songwriting expertise
is still intact. Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan is a flawless accomplishment.
Top-notch orchestral entertainment for winter evenings.

Band: PRESENT NATURE
Who: Alt-indie songwriting
newcomers from Leeds, UK.

Track: COLUMBA

Jonny Woolnough (songwriter): “It’s a character appropriation offering a lens
into a couple’s day-to-day existence. A protagonist veering off the track is reminded
of his immaterial fortune. It celebrates life, existence, and endless possibility. Columba
is a church on the main road arriving into Headingley, Leeds where the song is set.”

De-stressing fuel for daydreamers.
Columba feels like an Indian summer
sun ray.

Waking Up With… THE MOUNTAIN GOATS Rocking Their Tails Off On New Ripper

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

27 September 2023

📸 Jackie Lee Young Photography

Californian veteran rockers THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, conducted by singer/songwriter/musical mastermind and only original member John Darnielle,
are playing around for more than 3 decades (actually since 1991) and recorded/released no less than 22 albums and #23 is planned to see the day of light on 27 October. Titled JENNY FROM THEBES it comes via Merge Records.

Album artwork

Ahead of it they dropped a third track (stream all 3 below).
It’s titled MURDER AT THE 18th. GARAGE

DarnielleRather than being coy about it, let me tell you that somebody gets killed in this song, which is, at best, a short-term solution to Jenny’s problems, not that I’m saying she herself did anything. It’s her word against his now, and he can’t talk anymore, and she’s long gone by the time the EMTs get to 18th street. Under oath, I will testify that she was with me, because I am with her. I knew when I wrote this tune that Wurster-Hughes Inc. would eat it up like a big tasty snack, and guess what, they did. Lace up your dancing workboots but wear some inserts because this one’s a sprint

Killer track.

Coming Soon… New Album By THE MOUNTAIN GOATS

22 April 2021

Band: THE MOUNTAIN GOATS
Who: Indie folk-rockers led by founder
and singer-songwriter John Darnielle
From: Claremont, California, US
Active: Since 1991 / 20 albums (so far) /
Latest: Getting Into Knives (2020)

New album: DARK IN HERE – 20th LP (third in 18 months)
Cover artwork: Walpurgis Night in Bergslagen, Grandgärde in Dalarna
by Swedish painter Anshelm Schultzberg – 1896 – from the collection
of the Swedish National Museum.

Out: 25th June via Merge Records – Order info: here.

Peter Hughes (The Goat’s multi-instrumentalist): One of the words that
John (Darnielle) used when we were talking about the direction for ‘Dark in Here’
was “wild,” which I liked a lot. Not wild in the sense of abandon—these aren’t those
kind of songs. But wild in the sense of something undomesticated, untamable. Wild
like the immutability of nature, the way it will take back any piece of untended space
as its own…. Wild like the whale; like a powerful animal. Or a virus—the beast that
awakes, emerges from a forest, and stops the world. You can fight the calamity all
you want, but either way, it’s going to demand your surrender.

Lead-single: Mobile

A moody beauty…

‘Under The Spell Of Joy’ by DEATH VALLEY GIRLS (Los Angeles)
I just love this!! Big choir, booming beats, far-out sax, titanic tune, crazy finale. Surprise, surprise. It’s Death Valley Girls. Yes, the coolest graveyard garage rock band on the planet used to put a nightmarish spell on you, not one of joy. Listen up, you’ll love this too! FUN!

LE POPE 2066 (Aka Remix) by LEG PUPPY (South London)
Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha

‘Moment In The Sun’ by SUNFLOWER BEAN
The NYC darlings return with a perfect piece of passionate pop. By far the best thing
they ever put on record, to my ears. Funky, sparkling, and sickly sticky. A 24-Karat hit!

‘7 Seconds’ by PORRIDGE RADIO (Brigthon,UK)
Earlier this year this amazing Dana Margolin fronted band released their contender-for-best-album-of-the-year tour de force Every Bad and they shine again on this brand new catchy stunner.

‘Get Famous’ by THE MOUNTAIN GOATS (North Carolina, US)
This steamy horns driven stroke compresses the Mountain Goats’ fervor into
a backhanded benediction, a three-minute pop entreaty to reach for the stars.
Their new album ‘Getting Into Knives‘ arrives 23rd October via Merge Records.
