When THE KILLS Cover THE VELVET UNDERGROUND…

Many artists have covered songs by that highly influential and legendary 60s New York gang THE VELVET UNDERGOUND. One of the best renditions (so far) is by THE KILLS. Jamie Hince‘s squeaky, sharp-edged guitar blues swagger combined with the sultry voice
of charismatic singer Alison Mosshart is just perfect for that mysterious, dark VU sound. The duo recorded their version of PALE BLUE EYES as one of the B-sides for single ‘The Last Goodbye’, a track from their ‘Blood Pressures‘ album (2011). Here’s the gloomy result…

Sometimes I feel so happy,
Sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
But mostly you just make me mad
Baby, you just make me mad
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes

Thought of you as my mountain top
Thought of you as my peak
Thought of you as everything
I’ve had but couldn’t keep
I’ve had but couldn’t keep
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes

If I could make the world as pure
and strange as what I see
I’d put you in the mirror
I put in front of me
I put in front of me
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes

Skip a life completely
Stuff it in a cup
She said, Money is like us in time
It lies, but can’t stand up
Down for you is up.
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes

It was good what we did yesterday
And I’d do it once again
The fact that you are married
Only proves, you’re my best friend
But it’s truly, truly a sin
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes

‘Pale Blue Eyes’ was on the VU’s self-titled, third album (1969)…

Swedish Band MANKIND After Meeting THE VELVET UNDERGOUND’s Man…

coverblack

I recently discovered this Swedish band called MANKIND. Judging by their new single ART PROSTITUTE (featured on this week’s Seven In The Mix!) this quartet moves in mysterious ways. Those dark, obscure, psychedelic ways I really like. The B-side of the aforementioned new track – a cover of The Velvet Underground ‘s I’M WAITING FOR MY MAN – will show you exactly what I mean. Their extended version is something special. I’m absolutely sure that the band recorded this jam in one take AFTER they met THE MAN! Oh yeah, the first four minutes sound sloppy and stoned. Also loud, nasty and damn cool. And then a sort of The Doors’ The End outro comes on and lasts for about six minutes as if nobody had any idea when to stop. Final result: a doped VU cover! Experience the Stockholm madness here (warning: don’t watch the clip from too close or you might get seasick or high)…
