In order to not miss a beat TURN UP THE VOLUME scans the musical
horizon daily, for 10 years now, to pick ace tracks and add 5 new ones
twice per week, to the one and only JUKEBOX playlist that matters.
ALL TOGETHER
Here are the 5 new rad tracks added to the Jukebox.
1.‘Ring The Alarm’ by TOMORA (Chemical brother
Tom Rowlands and Norwegian songstress Aurora)
No retirement for indie legends THE WEDDING PRESENT from Leeds (1985–1997, 2004–present / 9 studio LPs so far). Led by
conductor David Gedge their hearts and souls still want to make
music and tour.
To end the year they join the long row of artists coming up with a Xmas carol.
Most of them just cover a classic one, so it’s a relief when somebody comes up
with an original song. And when it’s a crystal one like this I forget all about those
kitsch tunes (new and old) around.
Band: THE WEDDING PRESENT Who: Surviving indie rockers from
Leeds (UK) led by mastermind David Gedge Active: 1985–1997, 2004–present / 9 studio LPs
New album: 24 SONGS
WP celebrate the 30th birthday of their Hit Parade LP – a compilation
of 12 singles, released as 7″inch for 12 consecutive months- with a new
compilation of 24 tracks this time (A & B sides).
David Gedge: “Welcome to our fantastic new adventure! Yep, you heard it right, a new piece
of shiny vinyl every month for a year, starting in January. Sound familiar? Well, after 30 years, I felt like it was time for another go! And, as if 24 Wedding Present songs wasn’t enough… each of the records will come in a beautifully designed sleeve featuring brutalist photography by Jessica McMillan. And there’ll be a collector’s box to put them all in, too. We’re immensely proud of this series and hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.”
First single:WE SHOULD BE TOGETHER Release as a 7″ in January 2022
B-side: Don’t Give Up Without A Fight
Gedge invited Louise Wener, frontwoman of early 90s indie band Sleeper (still going strong today) for the kick-off of this new project. It’s an instantly recognizable WP tune,
but also instantly sticking, with lovey-dovey duet vocals.
Band: The Wedding Present (Leeds, UK) Active: 1985–1997, 2004–present Single: Kennedy B-side: Unfaithful Released: 25 Sep 1989 Score: First top 40 single in the UK peaking at #33 Album:Bizzaro – second LP – an indie classic
30 years ago today, on 23 October 1989, Leeds post punk misfits THE WEDDING
PRESENT led by troubled mastermind DAVID GEDGE released their second album,
titled ‘BIZARRO‘. A spiky, edgy and mind-boggling stream of electrical jingle jangle
intensity and cutting mixed emotions grimness with Gedge‘s jagged verbalˌsharp-
wittedness triggering every nerve in your body. Thirty years later it sounds as
fired-up and sharply strung as back then and still highly influential. Open your
ears and you will here countless young bands trying to capture its turbulent
buzziness today.
AllMusic wrote at the time: “The Wedding Present’s second proper studio album, ‘Bizarro’ cut down a bit on the frenetic jangle the band was known for in its early days and replaced it with healthy doses of darkness and power. Adding some fuzzy, crunchy distortion to give the guitars some hefty impact, slowing the tempos down to speeds that allow vocalist David Gedge to squeeze more heartbroken despair and bleak sarcasm out of every line, and generally upping their game in every way, the album is the fullest realization of the Wedding Present’s sound yet.” Full review here. Score: 4/5.
