up warm in the robe of reinvention. And what a reinvention. ‘Show Your Bones’ is resolutely autumnal. It’s gutsy, bruised, womb-warm, simultaneously tender and defiant, and just about as sprawling as you can get in under 40 minutes. Brilliant, in short.”

ALL MUSIC review: “The Wedding Present’s second proper studio album, ‘Bizarro’ cut down a bit on the frenetic jangle the band was known for in its early days and replaced it with healthy doses of darkness and power. Adding some fuzzy, crunchy distortion to give the guitars some hefty impact, slowing the tempos down to speeds that allow vocalist David Gedge to squeeze more heartbroken despair and bleak sarcasm out of every line, and generally upping their
game in every way, the album is the fullest realization of the Wedding Present’s sound yet.”

But it’s here that they’ve finally come into their own, where Jack and Meg White finally seem not only comfortable with the path they’ve chosen, but practiced, precise and able to convey the deepest sentiment in a single bound. It’s hard to know at this point in the game where they’ll head from here, but what matters is right now. And right now, I want to listen to this album again.”

ALL MUSIC review: “On their second album, Scritti Politti essentially was Green Gartside, who directed drummer Fred Maher, keyboardist David Gamson, and a multitude of studio musicians through a state-of-the-art, immaculately constructed set of catchy synth pop on Cupid & Psyche 85. The results are as impressive as Songs to Remember and produced the hit singles ‘Perfect Way’ and ‘Wood Beez’ (Pray Like Aretha Franklin).”

TURN UP THE VOLUME says: sounded like Bruce Springsteen going punk. The Rats penned some solid rock songs for this underrated debut, appreciated by many only after the punk hype was over. And that front sleeve is still as iconic as it was back then. My score: 4/5.

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Although Jane’s Addiction’s 1987 self-titled debut was an intriguing release (few alternative bands at the time had the courage to mix modern rock, prog rock, and heavy metal together), it paled in comparison to their now classic major-label release one year later, Nothing’s Shocking. Produced by Dave Jerden and Jane’s Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell, the album was more focused and packed more of a sonic wallop than its predecessor; the fiery performances often create an amazing sense that it could all fall apart at any second, creating a fantastic musical tension.” Score: 5/5 – Full review here

League in 1980, the decision seemed iffy; after all, the League appeared on the way up and would achieve global fame the very next year with Dare!. The first album from Heaven 17, Marsh and Ware’s new trio with singer Glenn Gregory, wasn’t greeted with quite the same commercial kudos when released in 1981, but it turned out to be an important outing nevertheless. Picking up where Kraftwerk had left off with The Man Machine, the group
created glistening electro-pop that didn’t skimp on danceable grooves or memorable

to save the best for last when they split in 1989. (They reunited in 1999, and have issued two more studio recordings since that time). 16 Lovers Lane is simply breathtaking; it is a deeply moving, aurally sensual collection of songs about relationships and the broken side of love
that never lapses into cheap sentimentality or cynicism. Songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan had always been visionary when it came to charting personal and relational melancholy and heartbreak, but here, their resolve focused on charting the depths of the romantic’s soul when it has been.” disillusioned or crestfallen, is simply and convincingly taut. While it’s true that the group was going through its own version of a soap opera-styled romantic saga, that emotional quagmire seemingly fueled its energies and focus, resulting in an album so texturally rich, lyrically sharp, and musically honest, its effect is nothing less than searing on an any listener who doesn’t have sawdust instead of blood in his or her veins.”
