but that record displayed some hints of rustiness and a desire to stay hip – two things notably absent from its superb sequel, ‘What Are You Going to Do With Your Life?’ Trimmed to just the duo of Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, Echo has succeeded where many of their peers have failed – they have matured without getting stodgy, they have deepened their signature sound without appearing self-conscious.”

PITCHFORK review: “The Boards have implemented their trademark tools on Geogaddi, but in the service of a slightly gloomier vision. Granted, the familiarity of their sound could prove to become a liability on their future releases, but it’s easy to see why Eoin and Sandison have played this record so close to the vest. If you’d perfected a sonic playground like this, you’d probably want to explore it a while longer, too.”

succinct hooks than before. Parker’s ruminations over a lost past give him the anger
that fuels ‘Squeezing Out Sparks’, one of the great rock records of the post-punk era.”

ALL MUSIC review: “New Order’s third LP, Low-life, was, in every way, the artistic equal of
their breakout, 1983’s ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’. The point where the band’s fusion of rock
and electronics became seamless, it showed the band members having it every way they wanted: heavily sequenced and synthesized, but with bravura work from Bernard Sumner’s guitar and Peter Hook’s plaintive, melodic bass; filled with hummable pop songs, but still experimental as far as how the productions were achieved – But there was no mistaking that New Order had reached a peak, experimenting with their sound and their style, but keeping every moment wrapped in an unmistakable humanness.”

DROWNED IN SOUND review: “In the late ’90s, a rash of Welsh rock bands emerged, among them Catatonia, Super Furry Animals, 60 Ft. Dolls, and the Stereophonics. On the surface, the Stereophonics’ gritty rock & roll seems relatively uninspired, but upon close listen Word Gets Around proves to be a very accomplished debut. Vocalist/guitarist Kelly Jones’ vocals are raw and rip the songs apart, as his loud, arena-ready guitar assault gives every track a gritty edge.”

BBC review: “It was their chart-topping 1996 single, “Firestarter”, that first took up lighter and aerosol and burnt the name of The Prodigy, and the piercing-covered gurn of Keith Flint, onto the national consciousness. But if you want to mark the point this gang of Essex ravers first learnt to unite the chemical rush of acid house and the anti-authority attitude that had hitherto been the preserve of black-clad anarcho-punks like Crass and their ilk, not loved-up glowstick twirlers, look back a couple of years to their 1994 album ‘Music For The Jilted Generation’.”

NME review: ” ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ has inspired plenty of people – Blur, The Coral, Klaxons, The Horrors, Devendra Banhart, pretty much every Home Counties art-school band ever – which makes it all the more ironic that one of the few bands that haven’t copied it is
Pink Floyd themselves. It’s down to one man, of course: before he lost his mind, Pink Floyd’s main songwriter was Syd Barrett, a sensitive, good-looking middle-class art student from Cambridge. His songs on ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ assemble a cast of cats, silver
shoes, unicorns, mice called Gerald, bikes, gnomes and the I Ching, and put them to some
of the most inventive and surprising psychedelic music ever recorded.”

BBC review: “By 1979 punk had gotten all grown-up. Metamorphosing into the bleaker, more serious genre of new wave, this was the dawn of the age of the long grey coat and European post-industrial chic. Therefore what a relief it was when along came the decidedly technicolour B-52’s (complete with the wayward apostrophe, grammar fans). And what an even greater surprise when, on their debut album, the band’s Dansette-style, dance-friendly pop blended perfectly with their retro new wave looks to create an all-time carefree classic.”
