THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN – 7 New Firecrackers Week 41

Every week Turn Up The Volume picks 7 new
firecrackers that burned his ears the past 7 days

‘Let’s Get This Party Started’ by TOM MORELLO (New York)

Tom Morello, the guitar hero of furious rockers Rage Against The Machine
released his 2nd solo album, titled The Atlas Underground Fire, yesterday
with a cast of big-name guests on vocals.

This one was recorded with British post-hardcore
noiseniks Bring Me The Horizon.

Wanna party? You betcha…

Recklessly‘ by JEEN (Toronto, Canada)

“After a while, it can be hard to know whether you control your destiny or if
your destiny is controlling you. ‘Recklessly’ is for when you can’t tell if you’re
moving forward or falling behind and when it’s impossible to know where
you’ll end up,”
says the Toronto songstress about her emotional eruption.

Jeen expresses doubting and depressing sentiments with grit and punch.
She shares the feelings many of us had/have to deal with due to the bizarre
times we live(d) in. One small comfort: you’re absolutely not alone.

This may help…

Jeen releases her new album Dog Bite next week, 22 October.

‘Got Me Going’ by ECLECTICUS (Canada)

Got me Going is the title track of the new EP.
by this buzz and fuzz outfit from Toronto.

Gar Reid (frontman): “Everyone seems to get supercharged before seeing
a live concert, so this song along with the music video really celebrates this
feeling associated with the pre-game festivities leading up to going to a concert!”

Not insane yet after the past crazy coronavirus crisis? Well, you have another
chance here to go out of your mind with this adrenalized vaccination of pure
rock ‘n’ roll euphoria.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Crutch’ by BAND OF HORSES (Seattle, US)

The Americana romantics are back and they feel good as they called their new album Things Are Great, out 21 January 2022. Well, lead-single is a pretty great thing, pushed
by a streamlined rock drive, a feet-tapping beat, and flavored with their characteristic
high-pitched vocals.

Press play and feel great too…

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Born Too Late’ by KICK AND THE HUG (Boulder, Colorado)

The fact that this band is scattered across the country, stretching all the way from
Los Angeles to Philadelphia, and Denver doesn’t prevent the quartet to start a fire.

Born Too Late is the perfect belter to test your lungs’ flexibility. The vocal
power developed here reaches a peak when the glorious chorus comes up.

Big vibe, big tune, big kick.

Put your phone down and oil your vocal chords…

‘C’mon America’ by JEFF TWEEDY (Belleville, Illinois)

This week Wilco‘s maestro dropped two new songs. This one is my favorite.

Tweedy says: “It’s a wry classic rocker from an unreleased group of songs with
mostly sci-fi lyrics.” Sci-fi lyrics? To my ears, this song’s content is crystal clear,
hearing these lines over and over again “What you gonna do, now that the world
is turned against you / C’mon America.”

Check it out…

.

‘Nowhere’ by BUD (Canada)

This Canadian singer-songwriter “wanted to capture that feeling of “I have no idea
what’s going on but let’s figure this one out!” depicting the energy in a dystopian world
while recognizing that we are the energy that can create positive change.”
I guess we
all had to go through a ‘who am I?‘ phase, if not it will hit you sooner or later.

But wait, this full-on glam-bam stomper might be the start of a more optimistic state
of mind. You don’t take a risk with going loose for 160 seconds. On the contrary, free yourself, get up and dance and go somewhere.

Right here, right now…

NME says: “In a genre often resistant to change, the former Rage Against
the Machine shredder has embraced pop, psych and Palestinian techno…
There are subtle nods to what’s come before, but for the most part, this

edge of a genre often afraid to evolve.”
Full review here. Score: 4/5.

Turn Up the Volume: I like his enflaming and riff-crazy electricity.
I like his humanitarian views and his anti-rock ‘n’ roll star attitude.
And, yes, I like this fireworks album.

firecrackers that burned his ears the past 7 days

1. Let’s Get The Party Started by TOM MORELLO feat. Bring Me The Horizon

From the RAGTM guitarist’s upcoming album titled The Atlas Underground Fire
with a series of big name guests. This is the clamorous belter featuring British noise
freaks Bring Me The Horizon

Deafening storm…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

2. ‘Black Widow Spider’ by PARQUET COURTS (New York City)

The jangly rockers drop album 7 Sympathy For Life on 21st October.
This is the third single. A rattling and rolling ripper.

Tune in…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Hard Skool by GUNS N’ ROSES

The second new track of the year from the macho Roses. Old Skool would
be a more appropriate song title. As usual Slash has sex with his guitar and
Axl Rose‘s vocal cords are still alive and kicking.

Enter paradise city here…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

4. ‘A Toxic Life’ by IMPERIAL ASHES (Toronto, CA)

A metal uppercut serving as an urgent call-to-action to address injustices
and atrocities that have plagued Indigenous communities for centuries.

Anger, rage and fury is what you get when awfully greedy governments
do what so many political sharks did in the past, taking the freedom, hope,
and future away of whole populations. Horrible.

We are connected, we’re feeling infected (a toxic life)
The treaty’s neglected, your laws are rejected (give up your fight)
Our colonial apathy, making the rivers bleed (things aren’t alright)
Your violations, stealing from nations (eating us inside)

5. ‘Living in the Heart of Love’ by THE ROLLING STONES

A few weeks ago the imperishable Stones announced a deluxe edition for
one of their last great albums Tattoo You celebrating its 40th-anniversary.
It will feature several previously unreleased tracks from those recording
sessions.

R.I.P. Charlie Watts…

6. ‘Bonnie’ by CUFFED UP (Los Angeles)

The band says that this new crackerjack is “an anti-love anthem about the grief and
pitfalls of a serious relationship crumbling due to lies and deceit. This is explored through
the eyes of Bonnie (of Bonnie & Clyde fame), in an alternative universe where Clyde selfishly leaves Bonnie for dead.”
Bonnie takes revenge because of the end of their romantic,
albeit toxic relationship.

Famous Bonnie (movie) quote (addressing Clyde): “What would you do if some miracle happened and we could walk out of here tomorrow morning and start all over again clean?
No record and nobody after us?”

Electrifying and fuming.
Here comes Bonnie (with mustache)…

7. ‘Before You Gotta Go’ by COURTNEY BARNETT (Australia)

One of the catchiest tunes I’ve heard all year, proving that sticky simplicity works tremendously well when you can sing along, hum along, or whistle along.
I Love you, Courtney.

Can’t resist this…

‘Before You Gotta Go’ by COURTNEY BARNETT (Australia)

An infectious ditty, bouncing in your head before it ends. If this, simply irresistible, tune doesn’t do anything for  you, you gotta go to your shrink. From Barnett’s new, upcoming album Takes Time, Take Time, out 12th November.

Catchy
as hell…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

stomper from the recently released lost Prince album Welcome To America.

Make your move here, ladies and gents…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Go Get A Tattoo’ by FRANK CARTER & THE RATTLESNAKES feat. Lynks

Why don’t we all get a tattoo, suggests Frank. I think he’s right, it’s

the band’s 4th longplayer called Sticky, arriving in October.

Smash your TV…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Security’ by AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS (Australia)

“I’m not looking for trouble, I’m looking for love / Let me in your hard heart Let me in your pub” sings Amyl over and over again with fervency and tons of gusto, while flamed-up guitars go mental. A blast from new album Comfort To Me, out 10th September.

Hit hit hit, Amyl…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Aire & Calder’ by ULTRASOUND (UK)

These passionate British glam-prog rockers unleash a deluxe edition of their
1999 double debut LP Everything Picture on 24 September. More info here.

Here’s a new video clip for one of the album’s highlights ‘Aire And Calder‘…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Soap And Cigarettes‘ by Nun habit (London)

A queer five-piece from London who play fun, fuzzy garage rock. Their songs are a mishmash of influences all pulled together by a love of loud noises, pop tunes, and
having a good time. ‘Soap And Cigarettes‘ is a stand-out knockout from their brand
new album Hedge Fun.

Trust me, you can’t resist this vibrant vibe…

.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘You And Me’ by THE RUDDY RUCKUS (Canada)

This ardent 4-piece flames with force on this new riff-roaring ripper. They operate somewhere between Green Day and Weezer, with peppery panache, gusty guitars,
vivid vocals, and a cracking chorus.

Scream along…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘What’s Wrong With People?’ by PESCH (Belgium)

Darkwave electricity from Belgium. Haunting and ominous. You can smell Doomsday waiting around the corner. It’s 2021, folks, we need to fix our problems now. This sickly sticky roller coaster is a call to arms.

What’s wrong
with all of us..

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Highway To Hell’ by TOM MORELLO feat. Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello launches his new album titled
The Atlas Underground Fire on 15 October. He invited several friends, like
Springsteen and Vedder for a bombastic version of AC/DC’s classic headbanger.

Yessssss

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Queen Of Swords’ by TYPHOID ROSIE (Brooklyn, US)

The speedy and steamy title track is one of the fired-up highlights of the new album of this punked-up Brooklyn squad. A zigzagging collection of amplified belters to start and end post-lockdown parties with. More info here.

Rock
your ass off here…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Money Song’ by ROYAL CASTLES (Canada)

Wham bam, bloody bam! From the kick-off Money Song booms, bangs and batters. Hefty guitars blare in between and raise your blood pressure on the spot. And when the blissful chorus pops up it’s time to leave your cocoon and let your body do its thing. Don’t wait to boost your stream of adrenalin.

Act now, dance now, party now.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘And Tomorrow’ by LORE CITY (Portland, US)

A stunning and shadowy top piece from this duo’s equally stunning
album Participation Mystique. And Tomorrow sounds cinematic,
atmospheric and spacey. Join Lore City on their journey.

Listen
today and tomorrow too…

.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘No Regrets’ by SHE/BEAST (Sweden)

Wurlitzer jukeboxes were invented for these 60s inspired humdingers, so they could be played in dark bars downtown were broken hearts gather at midnight. One more thing:
do not mess with SHE/BEAST, she’s not in the mood for fucking assholes and psychos.
And she’s absofuckinglutly right.

Press
play…

.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Popstar’s Daughters’ by SHAUN RYDER (Manchester, UK)

The Happy Mondays frontman’s brand new solo album
Visits From Future Technology is hip-shaking proof
that he still can fill dance floors.

Here’s the trippy and poppy single…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘All Nations’ by NADINE GAGNE and The Star Nation Collective (British Columbia)

This resonates as a bright sonic light at the end of our troubled world tunnel. Only with togetherness, friendship, mutual respect, equality, harmony and tolerance, humankind can have hope for the future. This tremendously catching chant reflects all that. It’s a joyful, anthem that should be played on radios all over the planet.

“We are all stars, all stars come on now. Rise, rise and shine, gotta stay proud!”

Let’s get together…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Heart Like Chernobyl’ by SOFT CELL (UK)

The song’s title is the gloom and doom harbinger for
a scary, realistic vision of how we live on the edge.

Tainted love…

Lead-single from new album *Happiness Not Included,
out in the Spring of 2022.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘See The Light’ by SHAUNA SEETEENAK (Iqaluit, Canada)

We need songs like these in the restless times we live in. Songs of hope, songs of consolation, songs of inspiration. Shauna wants humankind to fight to see the light
(at the end of the tunnel) again. Her thoughts are embedded in a starry-eyed and
instantly enthralling groove that hops from dreamy pop to hip-swaying rap and back.

See the light here…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Nowhere’ by THE BLACK FEVER (Toronto)

Nowhere sounds like a desperation song, but one that has a deeply felt effect on your psyche, on your state-of-2021-mind. This spellbound jam is driven by melancholic guitar lines, reminding me of Interpol‘s electrically-charged drive. Affecting and soul-stirring fever.

Check it out…

.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Skin’ by BASEMENT REVOLVER (Hamilton, Canada)

An inspiring reverie for the countless girls/women and boys/men worldwide, struggling with the looks of their body when it doesn’t correspond with society’s everlasting sexist perception of how a body should look like, as we all know. Skin is an instantly heartfelt
slo-mo musing, turning after a distorted guitar intro, into a vocal and musical pearl, with touching piano play. I’m sure The Sundays‘s Harriet Wheeler would love it.

Open your ears and eyes here…

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

‘You Are A Runner And I Am My Father’s Son’ by PORRIDGE RADIO (Brighton, UK)

Porridge Radio‘s leading Amazon Dana Margolin is a fan of Canadian rockers Wolf Parade. Here’s her  terrifically gripping rendition of the band’s 2005 composition.

Just beautiful…

See/hear you next month, music junkies…

Reverie Against The Machine – TOM MORELLO Dropped New Moody Single From Upcoming Solo LP

30 August 2021

Artist: TOM MORELLO
Who: Firework guitarist from crossover rappers Rage Against The Machine.
He also played with Audioslave and collaborated with about a million other
artists (so far) and he fabricates solo LPs.

His motto: Feed the poor. Fight the power. Rock the f*ck out.

New album: THE ATLAS UNDERGROUND FIRE
His 2nd solo longplayer
Out: 15th October 2021
Order-info: here

New single: DRIVING TO TEXAS featuring excellent voice Phantogram.

From a cover feat. Bruce Sprinsgteen and Eddie Vedder of the classic AC/DC
crackerjack Highway To Hell to this. Weird, but ace! The first part of this
new cut made me doubt if this was a Morello song. A moody reverie/ballad
with an appealing female voice is not really what you expect from the RATM
man. But as this slo-mo composition moves on, Morello comes out of the
shadows and delivers a most captivating guitar solo. Thrilling.

upcoming tribute album for The Velvet Underground.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Monster Love’ by THE JACKLIGHTS (Boston, US)

This is my favourite track from this tight trio’s new 5-track EP Drift. It’s a jagged jackhammer that rotates full steam ahead driven by hammering drum beats, ablaze
guitar layers, and poppy vocals on top of it. Need electricity to load your batteries?
Monster Love will satisfy your needs. Damn right!

They just wanna turn you on

‘The Blues Came In’ by THE BURNER BAND (Leeds, UK)

This Leeds’ rockabilly and roots duo brings the shake-and-twist of the 50s back to 2021. They rattle and roll, they riff and rock with a swirling pace. Get those dusty dance shoes out of the closet and make your move. Big fun guaranteed!

The track is from their debut album Sings and Wonders out 3 September
through Shed Load Records (vinyl) and digitally/CD via Bandcamp

Dance yourself dizzy right here…

‘Be The Only One’ by RISE CARMINE (Canada)

A song “about catharsis. It invokes the feelings of those who are subservient
to an autocrat and their dreams for release from oppression; a Shakespearean
betrayal under cover of darkness.”

Expect a psychedelic groove with a bluesy touch, electrical vibe,
catching progression, and reflective vocals floating all over it. Yes!

Be the one here…

THE BLOODY BEETROOTS And TOM MORELLO Drone Your Head In With Master Blaster ‘RADIUM GIRLS’

New sonic impulses…

6 June 2021

THE BLOODY BEETROOTS (Italian producer/DJ Bob Rifo) and TOM MORELLO
(Rage Against The Machine) teamed up for an EP called The Catastrophists
with several guests. We already went wild to Weather Strike featuring Russian
punkettes Pussy Riot.

And here’s RADIUM GIRLS, another master blaster with these guests:
Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, The Interrupters’ Aimee Interrupter,
White Lung’s Mish Way and The Last Internationale’s Delila Paz.

Tom Morello about the real Radium Girls: “Four extraordinary women and the
ferocious production of The Bloody Beetroots breathe life into the true story of the
Radium Girls, young Illinois factory workers who were the victims of one of the most
heinous crimes in U.S. industrial history.”

Watch the Morello directed video clip and hear the fury at play…

The Catastrophists EP is out 18th June
