5 BEST ALBUMS OF THE MONTH – JULY 2025

1 August 2025

Album artwork

Artist: MARK STEWART
Who: One of the most adventurous/inventive/original
post-punk & dub artists/performers ever, who passed away 2 years,
aged 62. He was a founding member of genre-bending new wave
group THE POP GROUP back in 1977. They recorded/released
a total of 4 albums.

As a prolific solo artist, he scored 7 LPs, collaborated with countless
other artists, and caused poignant waves with his Mafia outfit.

New Album: THE FATEFUL SYMMETRY
Released posthumously by Mute Records,

Mute Records: “Mute is extremely honoured to announce Mark Stewart’s new solo
album ‘The Fateful Symmetry’, a vital masterwork completed early 2023. Testifying to
his prolific, unrelenting ingenuity, and signifying one of his most intimate, empowering statements, The Fateful Symmetry is a fierce and beautiful manifesto for a better world. “

TUTV: Posthumous releases of favorite artists have two sides. One, you’re reminded
of the passing of a beloved musician, and two, you get excited as new material is released.  In this case, very good new material. No archives dump, or out-takes, weird rarities, and other low-quality stuff. The Faithfull Symmetry is a splendid, final opus by a unique musical mind.

Stewart‘s expresses again his mixed emotions about humanity and its messy planet. Both pessimistic and optimistic reflections, but always with sparks of hope. Musically, it’s a very accessible pop record with several crooning musings, This Is The Rain, Twilight Child, Crypto Religion, and the wonderful, goosebumps closer A Long Road (made me instantly think of his good friend and fan Nick Cave).

His characteristic, captivating voice, both heartrending and heartwarming at the same time, feels so real, so close, and as always, engaged and genuine. Mark Stewart was one
of a kind and will always be in my book. Thank you, Mute Records, for this posthumous treasure, one to cherish

New album artwork

Band: WET LEG
Who: Isle Of Wight (UK) pop sensation, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, who
attracted tons of attention with their prizewinning self-titled debut LP from 2022.

New album: MOISTURIZER

The Independent (English newspaper): “Far from being burned out, or being
bullied into selling out, by the sudden wave of global fame, they’ve doubled down
on their own weird energy. Moisturizer’s uncanny electricity is off the voltmeter.”

TUTV: The girls and band fabricated the album in an isolated, remote house
in the countryside, written in a creative frenzy, diving into themes of obsession
and all-consuming love. A record mostly inspired by Teasdale falling in love, in
her first queer relationship, in 2021. Again, her lyrics are witty, sarcastic/cynical,
double-edged and at times quite absurd. There’s a lot of love and lust involved.

“I can make you sticky / Make you hot screaming for after sun.
I can make you beg / Can make you wet like an aquarium”

“Would you still love me if I was a worm?”

“You’re the rock to my roll / You’re the sand between my toes /
Sweet baby girl, we go like salsa and Doritos”.

Teasdale‘s new look: dyed hair, dyed eyebrows, and sexy lingerie outfit fit
her sultry mindset. Sonically, they sound somewhat heavier here and there,
but overall their effective formula – sticky, edgy, upbeat tunes – colors
also this 2nd effort.

Artist: GINA BURCH
Who: Co-founder/bassist of British post-punk outfit The Raincoats (1977-1984).
One of the top indie bands in the UK back then. They released 3 LPs, then called
it a day.

In 1993, they reunited, fabricated another album (1996),
launched reissues and rarities, and gigged now and then.

Birch was/is very active as a film/videomaker, working
for big names such as The Libertines and New Order.

In 2023, she released her critically acclaimed solo debut
LP I Play My Bass. It was released through Jack White’s
Third Man Records
.

New Album: TROUBLE
Her 2nd one, again released via the
former white stripe’s record label.

Birch: “It’s a bit out there, a bit off the tracks, and I always like to go there. I unofficially subtitled the album ‘Trouble I’ve Caused and Trouble I’m In’, so the songs are based around
that feeling—that dangerous place to be.”

“These songs came to me like a radio tuning, the airwaves going along, and I just plucked them out of the air. Something just clicks in the atmosphere, and I just take it. I’m not writing an opus about one thing. I’m writing an opus about being me.”

TUTV: Hey, all you people in trouble out there (the whole planet, I guess, each one in his/her own way) close your eyes and let your ears get massaged by this introspective, soul-searching record. You’ll feel like being in the middle of a gratifying dream with no intention whatsoever to wake up soon. Well, that’s what my troubled inner ego experienced.

Birch moves and grooves in dub bass motion juiced with swollen, resounded orchestrations here and there, while reggae echoes add a party feel. Most of all
Trouble entertains your confused 2025 state of mind. Its slow/fast trippy swagger
has a hip-shaking impact, and her expressive vocals match the full picture like a
glove. Stay yourself, stay in trouble, doom monger. I’m sure the late great dub
wizard Lee “Scratch” Perry would have digged this kind of sonic trouble too.

Band: PANIC SHACK
Who: 4 pop punkettes from Wales. In 2022 they
released their 6-track debut EP Baby Shack.

Album: PANIC SHACK
Their debut.

Press info: “Across the album, the lyrics are conversational, often stemming from
in-jokes, while the subject matter spans the full range of the feminine experience.

Irresistible because of their simplicity and charming because of their familiarity,
The sonic equivalent to a coming-of-age film unfolding over a single night, Panic
Shack
takes the shape of a bender, beginning by approaching a bar and ending
with an impassioned speech at sunrise about how much you love your friends.

Swerving the expected topics of sex and romance, the entire
album revolves around the ionic bond between the four girls.”

The Guardian (British newspaper): “Panic Shack’s music the same effect as
popping a bottle of Prosecco – explosive, intoxicating, and delightfully chaotic.”

Album artwork

TUTV: Panic Shack are Bikini Kill 2025. Less political but straight in your face anyway, with
a similar screamy riotousness and an afire appetite for perky parties in pubs and booze bars. Their power-pop-punk blitz causes effervescent waves of lust for life, full of joy and ahoy. The loud and clear opposite of The Stooges ‘No Fun’.

Artist: YUNGBLUD
Who: English singer-songwriter celeb born, named Dominic Richard Harrison 27 years ago.
He released his debut EP in 2018. From there on it he headed to stardom in a straight line.

New album: IDOLS
His 4th.

With #1 albums in seven countries and a reputation for defying
convention, Yungblud describes Idols as “a project with no limitations.

Kerrang says: “It’s a go-getter of a record that pays homage to the greats whilst
still feeling brand new. Yungblud’s outlandishness makes him a hard pill to swallow
for some, but his guts, drive, and devotion to his craft cannot be denied.”

TUTV: His best. Whether he unleashes uptempo, slow tempo or mid-tempo tunes
on your speakers, Yungblud scores. Half the album contains singles and worthy tracks. Wowzers.

His passionate, dynamic and vitalized performances, juiced with some drama, bombast and lost of rhapsody lift this new record to hit status. Ladies and gents, we have a pop-ular winner.

Former Raincoat GINA BIRCH Has Her 2nd Bass Trippy Solo LP ‘TROUBLE’ Out

14 July 2025

Back in the day (1977-1984), British punkettes THE RAINCOATS
were one of the top indie bands in the UK. They released 3 LPs,
then called it a day.

In 1993, they reunited, fabricated another album (1996),

LP I Play My Bass. It was released through Jack White’s
Third Man Records
.

New album artwork

Album: TROUBLE
Her 2nd one, again released
via the former white stripe’s
record label.

Press info: Trouble is a patchwork of sorts: its 11 songs are not only eclectic
in genre but play like stitched-together vignettes, fly-on-the-wall scenes in which
Gina describes meeting a stranger on a train, or a flare up with her teenage daughter,
or the nostalgia of driving past a certain part of your neighborhood that’s been
unchanged for as long as you can remember.

It’s the politics of the everyday, a work that is feminist not because of slogans
or placards, but because it’s a candid portrait of a female artist simply existing.

As such, the connecting factor that links all the songs on Trouble together isn’t one
single ideology or theme or topic, but Gina herself. It’s her vision, informed by her
status as a rock icon, her voice as a forward-thinking artist, and her perspective as someone who just thinks life should be a bit of a laugh sometimes.

I’m writing an opus about being me.”

acumen ears and the late great dub expert.

Highlights: the two singles, I Thought I’d Live Forever, Cello Song,
Don’t Fight Your Friends
and Nothing Will Ever Change That.

Raincoat GINA BIRCH Releases 2nd Solo LP In July – Hear Her Feminist Anthem ‘CAUSING TROUBLE AGAIN’

Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

9 May 2025

Back in the day (1977-1984) British punkettes THE RAINCOATS
were one of the top indie bands in the UK. They released 3 LPs,
then called it a day.

In 1993 they reunited, fabricated another album (1996),
launched reissues and rarities and gigged now and then.

Co-founder/bassist GINA BURCH was/is very active as a film/videomaker
(she worked for big names such as The Libertines and New Order and
worked with other musicians such as Red Crayola .

In 2023 she released her critically acclaimed solo debut
LP I Play My Bass . It was released through Jack White’s
Third Man Records
.

New album artwork

She just announced the upcoming birth of her 2nd one.
It’s named Trouble and will land on 11 July, again via
Third Man Records.

Along with the news comes first single CAUSING TROUBLE AGAIN.
A vigorous anthem citing a cast of women who’ve stirred shit up over
the years such as Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Mary Douglas, Peaches, Dolly
Parton, Sinead O’Connor
and a lot of heroines more.

Birch about the accompanying video “After hearing Bob Dylan sing about a white
ladder all covered with water, I became obsessed with white ladders. I decided to use
five white ladders, three with seven rungs. realized later that this references Jacob’s Ladder
and a connection from Earth to heaven, but I think I was thinking of ladders as a symbol of getting on, getting up. I wanted to have a choreographed movement with four of us with these ladders. How do we move with ladders? Do we move together, do we fight, do we dance?”

I also wanted to reference the wind scene from the film, The Colour of Pomegranates, and to include as many artist women from the Women in Revolt exhibition as I could. I wanted them
to be troublesome, or just to shout “Causing trouble!” I ended up inviting all the artist musician women I knew who could make the shoot, and it was a fantastic meeting of great women, many of whom had never met each other before.”

Wake up, and listen to the riot
raincoat girl rockin’ again.

Splendiferous Album ‘SHARON VAN ETTEN AND THE ATTACHMENT THEORY’ Out Now

7 February 2025

Renowned Brooklyn-based songstress (one of my favorite voices of the past years)
Sharon Van Etten has her 7th LP, named SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY .

It’s the first album which credits her band, named
for the occasion, The Attachment Theory.

Van Etten: “For the first time in my life I asked the band if we could just jam.
Words that have never come out of my mouth – ever! But I loved all the sounds
we were getting. I was curious – what would happen? In an hour we wrote two
songs that ended up becoming “I Can’t Imagine” and “Southern Life”.

“Sometimes it’s exciting, sometimes it’s scary, sometimes you feel stuck. It’s like every day feels a little different – just being at peace with whatever you’re feeling and whoever you are and how you relate to people in that moment. If I can just keep a sense of openness while knowing that my feelings change every day, that is all I can do right now. That and try to be the best person I can be while letting other people be who they are and not taking it personally and just being. I’m not there, but I’m trying to be there every day.”

Album artwork

UNCUT Magazine says: “Enjoying a kind of midlife techno-goth glow-up,
on tracks “Idiot Box” and the incendiary “Indio” coming on like a female
fronted Future Islands or Pat Benatar joining Curve.”

TUTV: Sonically, Van Etten‘s most vigorous record to date. At times Van Etten
rocks out (Idiot Box / Indio / I Can’t Imagine (Why You Feel This Way) / Somethin’ Ain’t Right)
as she had never done before, with the help of the zealous Attachment Theory band.

Overall the sound is more puissant, more dynamic, more sinewy than on her previous work, with waves of synths, firm percussion and buzzy guitar electrification. You can feel the joie de vivre at work here. Never a dull moment. Only solid gold songs.

Next to the three topflight singles, the closing track is the magical highlight. An almost
7-minute, melodramatic piece of bone-chilling music that makes the hair in your neck stand up. A masterly vocal tour de force. A majestic end of a majestic album. Simply her best. Splendiferous.

turbulent phases, as they always pass with time.

Band: MARSEILLE
Who: Juvenile rock wolves
from Derbyshire, UK.

New single: HISTORY
The song is a love letter to the
dreams we all had as children.

TUTV: These young British gunslingers echo the early hopped-up days of global rock champs Oasis. They have the Gallaghers‘ sassy swagger, cocksure verve and champagne supernova groove. And the vocalist is Liam‘s son, well he could be.

They look cool, they act cool and they sound supersonic cool. They don’t look
back in anger, they want to conquer the future. D’ you know what I mean?

Track: AN ARTIST IS AN ARTIST
Their first single in 3 years and according to
a press message “the surprising first taste of
what’s to come from the band in 2025”
.

An Artist Is An Artist is an instant striking stroke pushed by a mind-boggling
speedy velocity, Skin‘s hyperactive rapping, a paranoid saxophone and a
flabbergasting chorus. Not the titanic bombast we’re used to. Mind you,
still loud enough to wake your neighbours. Fucktastic flare-up.

Band: CHARM SCHOOL
Who: The latest project from Andrew Sellers who, originally from Louisville (KY),
has paid his dues in both the NYC and LA DIY music scenes, and his various bands
have played with seminal acts like Joan of Arc, Grizzly Bear & At The Drive-In.

Track: WITHOUT A DOUBT
Cut from their upcoming LP, titled ‘Debt Forever‘,
out on January 24th. More info here.

Album artwork

Sellers about the track: “It’s by far the most pensive, melancholic song on the record, and it seems fitting that it’s coming out right now, amidst all the turbulence in the world. The main theme of this new record is financial uncertainty (or just uncertainty in general), so the main thing I remember about this song is the refrain “Please don’t let me run out of money” coming out randomly during practice one day.”

Interpol guitar echoes are the backbone of
this glorious mid-tempo gem. Close your eyes
and lose yourself in this riveting masterstroke.

Who: Legendary indies fronted by
mesmeric voice Kristin Hersh.

Track: SUMMER OF LOVE
Single from the Muses‘ upcoming, 11th longplayer,
baptized Moonlight Concessions. Comes our way
on March 14.

The song was inspired by a bet Hersh had with a guy for
a dollar that revolved around the idea that the seasons
don’t change us.

Kristin Hersh strums her acoustic guitar
as she did/does her wayward way for years
now, on this sonic hypnotizer. It gets under
your skin without asking permission.

Artist: ERIC SCHROEDER
Who: Very productive San Diego-born songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist who released no less than
5 albums in just 4 years and a new one is waiting

Track: EMILY
Piece from his new, forthcoming LP
named Cat’s Game out on April 11.

The lyrics speak to a lost love, as he sings, “I long to be where the colors tease, and her love concedes” with wounded swagger benefitting the paradoxical paradise of psychic devotion. There’s a unique form of bittersweet American poetry in Schroeder’s ability to make you feel the weight of longing with every lancing line.

Artist: MR BILLY FRITZGERALD
Who: Dublin-based solo artist writing lush indie-pop songs
that simultaneously bathe in the faded light of heartbreak
while pulling you on to the dancefloor.

Track: LET US BE (SINGLE)
Song from his upcoming debut album,
titled ‘A Grand Romantic Gesture’, out on
Feb 20th.

Lyrically the track explores the theme of being with someone when everyone else thinks it’s a bad idea. Billy draws on his own experience, while growing up and learning how to be in a relationship and developing those tools, inevitably and regrettably, people get hurt along the way. Here he delves into this, as he declares love and devotion while facing down the barrage of words against the union. A true Romeo and Juliet story.

Tremendous intro. Infectious upper
juiced with sparkling guitar play,
a puissant, foot-tapping drum beat
and intensive vocals.

9. ‘Coward’ by MARISSA BURWELL (Canada)

“This song began being written mid tearful phone conversation when I realized that I wasn’t being honest with myself. At the time it was just a statement written down but resulted in deep reflection, looking at where my desire to play something safe originated, where it came from to not trust what my body and mind were telling me.”

A smooth, electrifying groove, gripping vocals, and introspective lyrics.

Top!

10. ‘Accepted’ by MADAM SAD (Canada)

Artwork by Maddison Schreiber

Maddison Schreiber, aka Madam Sad is disabled person on ODSP. She had violent acts committed against her regularly. Things such as going without food, being threatened
with homelessness, watching rent rise as my income stays stagnant.

“This song specifically pulls from the idea that there’s a large group of people that are either apathetic or encouraging of extorting others. I feel like this is violent by nature, so to become violent within this system you then become accepted by that system”.

This stirring reverie will touch your heart and soul.

BE YOUR OWN PET – Nashville’s Garage Punk Rockers Unleash New Projectile ‘BIG TROUBLE’

Daily noise that works faster and harder than any stimulant

28 July 2023

Single artwork

Nashville‘s inflammable garage rockers BE YOUR OWN PET had some bonkers
fun between 2004-2008, vanished into oblivion afterward, but last year they couldn’t
stop themselves from coming back and starting to play an endless series of gigs.

And now it’s new music time. The revitalized bloodhounds have a new
LP, titled MOMMY ready for a 25 August release. Pre-order info here.

Album artwork

With BIG TROUBLE they just dropped the 4th single off the longplayer.

Jemina Pearl: “I want wages for housework! I want childcare for free! I want on-demand abortions! Full body autonomy! I live in a country that has taken away the basic human right to an abortion and then has the audacity to ask ‘Why are you so angry?’ ‘Big Trouble’ is about how the daily injustices are all connected to the overarching societal issues of living in a patriarchy.”

It’s pure BYOP. A blustery pop-punk projectile to hit moronic,
conservative politicians with, in the Divide States Of America.

Get them.

All 4 singles.

British Popsters THE BIG MOON Share Second Track From Fortcoming Album – Hear ‘TROUBLE’ Here

New striking strokes

11 September 2022

Band: THE BIG MOON
Who: Female dream-pop quartet from London

New album: HERE’S EVERYTHING – their 3rd
Out: 14 October 2022 – pre-order info here

Juliette Jackson (voice/songwriter) about the album: “So much of the album I wrote
while I was pregnant and basically just wondering what the hell this was going to be like.
When I listen to it now, I can hear myself saying all these things and having all these anxieties. Those songs are a bit more floaty and just thinking about things and the songs I wrote after are more like the reality of extreme highs and extreme lows and the whole hormonal madness.”

First single Wide Eyes made me smile last July. And here’s taster #2 called TROUBLE.

Juliette Jackson : “Trouble is about remembering walking over the railway bridge to the hospital to give birth,” Juliette Jackson explains. “This is a bridge I cross every day, but somehow in my memory on that day it’s like a bridge over a canyon in a technicolour Wizard of Oz jungle landscape. Like giant leaves and blurry edges and oversaturated colours. But it’s just a pissy graffiti-covered South London pedestrian bridge. And it’s about learning that memories aren’t always right, and you don’t have to hang on to them and be traumatised by them forever.”

Enjoy the vibrant vibe here.
