John Graham Mellor better know as JOE STRUMMER was born in Ankara, Turkey on
21 August 1952. He would have turned 66 today. Unfortunately the iconic musician died suddenly on 22 December 2002 in his home at Broomfield in Somerset, England, following an undiagnosed heart defect. He was only 50. The world knows him best, of course, as the tremendously passionate frontman of legendary punk gang THE CLASH who turned into
a multifaceted, challenging and plain-spoken rock band over the years and was often lauded at the time as ‘the only band that matters’.
The great late artist’s work outside of The Clash will be released in a new compilation, entitled JOE STRUMMER 001, featuring rare and unreleased recordings as a solo artist,
as a member of his 101ers and Mescaleros and the first recordings he made post-Clash with former bandmate Mick Jones. The record, in a variety of formats will be out next month. The cover of the compilation is taken from Joe’s 1990 Californian driver’s license.
Ahead of its release here’s a track called LONDON IS BURNING, an alternate version
of Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros’ song BURNIN STREET…
