Scottish Pop Legend EDWYN COLLINS Released His Solo Debut ‘HOPE AND DESPAIR’ 30 Years Ago Today…

29 May 2019

This day 30 years ago, on 29th May 1989, former singer/songwriter EDWYN COLLINS
of Scottish popsters Orange Juice released his solo debut album HOPE AND DESPAIR.

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Collins’s post-Orange Juice debut album has the familiar trappings of one of Glasgow’s most celebrated songwriters. A man whose main fallbacks seem to be lovelorn pessimism and cynicism toward the entertainment industry. Still, when you prepare the same feast as lovingly as Collins does, you’ll never be short of house guests. The songwriting craft here is as keenly evident as you’d expect, with reggae hero Dennis Bovell providing production help & bass… as the artist treads carefully through everything from blue-eyed pop to rustic country in his resolutely surefooted manner”.

Highlights: If Ever You’re Ready / Darling They Want It All / The Beginning Of The End / Testing Time / The Wide Eye Child In Me / Hope And Despair

COURTNEY LOVE Says A HOLE Reunion Is Possible…

29 May 2019

As former manic grunge legends HOLE celebrated the 25th birthday of their second album Live Through This last month, front-screamer-woman COURTNEY LOVE talked about a possible reunion in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian: “We are definitely talking about it. There’s nothing wrong with honoring your past. I’ve just kind of discovered that. If you don’t, people will rewrite history and you will become an inconvenient woman.” Read the whole story here. I saw the 2010 HOLE reincarnation playing live twice
(Amsterdam and Paris), but wouldn’t mind to see more of the original.

If they come back here are three killers I want them to play…

WORST ALBUM COVERS EVER – Part 15 – ‘Lick It Up’ By KISS…

Band: KISS
Album: LICK IT UP
Released: 1983 / 11th album
Artwork: the only thing I ever liked about
this macho combo was the fact that their faces
were covered by funny make-up and suddenly
it was over and they became The Backstreet Boys
with curly wigs on. Scary!!!

Daily fuel to load your sonic batteries…

Memes’ Paul or John

Early last month Turn Up The Volume! stumbled into a fresh Scottish band. A jangly post punk The Fall-like noise duo featuring Paul and John (with those names world domination will be a piece of cake) calling themselves MEMES. The cutting tandem had just released their two smashing debut tracks ‘Blah Blah Blah‘ and ‘Funny Man‘ and now the pair is back with a new biting thwack on which they sound actually a bit like Mike Skinner‘s The Streets after he picked up a bass, hired a drum machine and went totally parlando punk. AWESOME STUFF! AGAIN! Here’s ‘GO TWEET ME‘…

.
Fucking ace, isn’t it?! By the way the band is one step closer to global stardom. Former legendary NME hack and BBC‘s cool DJ Steve Lamacq invited them for a live session where they also played this fresh ‘Go Tweet Me‘ slam. Check it out…

‘FADE TO GREY’ By VISAGE (1980) – Frontman STEVE STRANGE Would Have Turned 60 Today…

Knockouts from the past

28 May 2019

Welsh artist Steven John Harrington aka STEVE STRANGE was the voice and the face of VISAGE‘s mega 1980 hit FADE TO GREY. He would have turned 60 today (Harrington was born in England 28th May 1959 and passed away in Egypt in 2015). The song was written by Billy Currie/Chris Payne/Midge Ure and the spectacular clip was directed by ex-10CC duo Godley & Creme. It peaked at #8 on the UK Singles Chart and still is viewed as one of the most characteristic pop anthem of the New Romantics era (late 1970s / early 80s). Watch here…
