Eccentric metal legend OZZY OSBOURNE released his twelfth solo album called ORDINARY MAN last week. Partly a hot-blooded powerhouse, partly a surprisingly personal and touching reflection (“I was unprepared for fame / Then everybody knew
my name”) digging up memories. Even at 71 and dealing with health problems the
past few years and still today (he had to cancel a new tour as he was diagnosed with Parkinson) he sounds as hot-blooded and bloodthirsty as in the early days, but also melancholic, heavyhearted (like in the emotive ballad, the title track featuring, yes,
Elton John) and aware of his mortality. The Prince Of Darkness is no ordinary man!

Score: When you know what Tropentarn actually means – a camouflage pattern used by the Bundeswehr in arid and semi-arid regions – and you hear the song’s doom and gloom lyrics you know something is rotten in the state of Use Knife who reflect the explosive times we all experience in today’s troubled world. The duo camouflaged their apocalyptic view to avoid you will run away screaming in an accessible, yet ominous synth-driven slow-mo pop tune, spiced with a hypnotic chorus, that gets under your skin slowly but surely. Belgian indie rock trio VVYNN (read: win) released last December two new stirring
tracks, ‘Exhale‘ reminding me of PJ Harvey’s deep digging intensity and ‘Moaning’, a poignant introspection causing goosebumps. Two affecting, amplified musings lifting
the band to a higher and must hear level.

Last month they launched a graceful and expressive clip for EXHALE and recently
an equally emotive video went online for MOANING. Check it out below…

Watch MANIC STREET PREACHERS play ‘THIS IS YESTERDAY‘ at Glastonbury Festival
in 2003. It’s still one of my all-time favourite Manics beauties. It has that characteristic, warm melancholic and wistfully romantic feel we all know from the Welsh legends’ other touching ballads. The song, with lyrics written by the late Richey Edwards, appeared on their gloomy milestone album ‘‘The Holy Bible’, their last LP before Richey went missing on 1 February 1995.

WAXAHATCHEE aka KATIE CRUTCHFIELD releases her fifth album, titled ‘SAINT CLOUD‘ on 27 March. After sharing lead-single ‘Fire’ last month here’s another new one. Although ‘LILACS‘ isn’t an optimistic song as it’s about “backsliding into old behaviors that don’t serve you and sort of letting your worst self get the best of you” it sounds uplifting and light-hearted. A bit folky and country balancing between Dolly Parton and Lucinda Williams.

Score: Not many bands hit the bullseye with their debut single but that’s what this
eager NYC’s guitar pop outfit exactly does. ‘Christian‘ draws your aural attention from
the get-go. The titillating combination of yearning and starry-eyed vocals, jangly guitar vitality, arousing flow, and a harmonious catching chorus turns this vivid tune into a
peppy earworm you want to spin again instantly.

Vocalist/guitarist Ava East said in an interview with Detroit Metro Times “This album is
all of us in one. You know, we all bring a part to it, and so, like, even though we have this mystery, this aesthetic, this is an honest record. It’s like this is who we are. I think the only
way to stop us is if someone put their heels on or, like, skirts or something.”

This outspoken, vitalizing and utterly cool trio definitely knows how to rock ‘n’ pop.
Expect cracking jangly guitars, non-stop ass-kicking bass/drum solidity, brisk harmonies and punchy tunes, echoes from Sleater-Kinney to L7, lots of relationship-related stories,
a spunky swagger and a ‘don’t mess with us‘ attitude. They are here to stay!
