‘YOUNG SHAKESPEARE’ – Another NEIL YOUNG Live LP? Yes And It’s A Stellar One

28 March 2021

Artist: NEIL YOUNG

Album: YOUNG SHAKESPEARE
What: A live longplayer and concert film recorded/shot in 1971,
three days after that other live document Live At Massey Hall 1971,
during the Journey Through The Past solo tour.
Released: 26 March 2021

Louder Than War says: “Young Shakespeare is the latest gem to be unearthed
from his vaults: a pristine live recording of Young at his simplest and purest – just
his voice, his acoustic guitar and his harmonica (and occasionally at the piano),
recorded on his Journey Through The Past solo tour in early 1971. It’s spellbinding…
Everything on this recording, it’s just perfect.”

Full review here. Score: 10/10.

Turn Up The Volume says: Another Neil Young live album, I hear you say?
Yep, the Canadian troubadour still is delving deep in his basement, and as
long as he comes up with treasures like this I’m all ears. This heart-warming
solo performance – acoustic guitar and voice – including stupendous live
versions of some of his best ballads ever (Old Man, Helpless, The Needle
And The Damage Done, Down By The River
) is just s-t-e-l-l-a-r. Fact!

Gripping reveries for the laziest day of the week…

28 March 2021

Discover heartrending singer-songwriter LOU HENEISE, an American singer-songwriter with roots in the city of Chicago, the rolling farmland of the Midwest, and the Bible Belt of the South.

Her debut EP Trial & Erroras introspective and earnest as it is catchy, capturing the American heartbeat – arrives April 9th. Lead-single BAD DAY foretells that something special is coming. It’s a musing and touchy Americana daydream with Heneise‘s glowing voice drawing all the aural attention, although her galvanizing guitar play is pretty persuasive too. This is a sweet little pearl with an unwinding effect. A blue beauty.

Riot VENUS GRRRLS Power With ‘GOTH GIRL’ Ripper

28 March 2021

Band: VENUS GRRRLS – newest single
Who: All girl rock band from Leeds, UK promoting the participation, acknowledgment, and respect of women in the music industry. Aiming to bring fortitude and activism through hard hitting alternative rock music, the quintet use electronic and astrological sounds to amplify their sonic signature.

Track: GOTH GIRL

About: The song “begins painting a picture of two friends hanging out, who eventually
realise their struggles for their choice of clothes and makeup… It made us also thinking
about how fickle society is, and how it’s always ready to point the finger at something new.
Goth Girl clings to all of these notions, and most definitely is an ode to our younger selves.”

Score: This 21st Century Bikini Kill team generates an overwhelming energy that immediately drags you into its furious development. And I’m sure this raging ripper
could trigger early Sioux Sioux memories of the moment she decided to become a
Goth Queen. She inspired and still inspires young girls all around the globe to do
what they wanna do and be who they wanna be.

Venus Grrrls also have that irreversible determination, that don’t -mess-with-me attitude,
that sassy swagger and a phenomenal vocal force to make you hear loud and clear who and what they wanted to be. Riot girl power all the way.

But I wanna be a goth girl,
and I was never popular
I’m satan’s sister on the ground
I wanna be a, I wanna be a,
I wanna be a goth girl

Feel the heat here.

On The Roof In Los Angeles With U2 This Day In 1987

27 March 2021

Band: U2

Single: WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME (1987)
Score: #1 in Ireland and New-Zealand, #4 in the UK
and #13 in the US

Album: The Joshua Three

The clip for the song, unquestionably inspired by The Beatles‘ legendary roof
performance in London in 1969, was shot on the roof of a store in downtown
Los Angeles
(no idea why they didn’t go to New York, that’s THE city where the
streets have no names) on 27 March 1987. The shoot was ended by the police
when the traffic got stuck as hundreds of enthusiastic passers-by blocked the
streets. Rock ‘n’ roll!!

Let’s hit the roof

BLOC PARTY Mastermind KELE OKEREKE Reveals ‘SMALLTOWN BOY’ Cover

27 March 2021

As Bloc Party enjoys a very long holiday (last album Hymns came
out 5 years ago) mastermind KELE OKEREKE goes his own way again…
for the fifth time. His new album The Waves Pt. 1 lands on May 28th.
Order info here.

Okereke: “I still had the desire to create… I knew I had to fill in the space of
this record entirely by myself, which was daunting but also very liberating.
This album is literally the sound of me.”

Last month he shared a trippy instrumental off the album, called
The Heart Of The Wave and here’s another taster. Actually a cover
of Bronski Beat‘s massive 1984 hit Smalltown Boy.

Okereke‘s slowed the song down, minimized the sonic orchestration,
just a guitar and synth echoes, and gives it a heartbroken touch with
his affective falsetto voice. Wonderful!

New Album: IS 4 LOVERS

NME says: “The Canadian dance-punk duo tackle love and
modern society of their gnarly fourth record. They still pack
a punch, but now the bruise is more colourful… ‘Is 4 Lovers’
is surely the band’s best work since their debut. And while
they may never feel that vital again, they make right now
feel like one helluva rush.”
Full review: here. Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume: The masters of drone rock are back, and they’re
getting better over the years. Gigantic fuzz and buzz jackhammers but
