ALAN VEGA At His Creepy Best On Two Previously Released Tracks ‘INVASION’ And ‘MURDER ONE’

New striking strokes

26 February 2022

Last year lost album MUTATOR of the late great Suicide half ALAN VEGA came to the surface. An astounding piece of work, a top 10 LP on Turn Up The Volume‘s 2021 list.

And now we get two more previously unreleased tracks discovered in Vega’s cellar.

INVASION comes from Vega’s last recordings (2012-2015) – for his posthumous album ‘IT’) and MURDER ONE is an almost 10 minutes spoken-word rant. Alan Vega at his creepy best.

… AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD Released ‘SOURCE TAGS & CODES’ 20 Years Ago

Back in time

26 February 2022

Band: … AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD
Also abbreviated as Trail of Dead, or T.o.D.
Who: Texan DIY post-punks
Active: 1994-present / 10 albums

Anniversary album: SOURCE TAGS & CODES – 3rd LP
Released: 26 February 2002 – 20 years ago today

Pitchfork said: “While Source Tags and Codes does seem to carry with it a certain knowledge of its own brilliance, it never tries to cheaply impress. Simply put, it doesn’t need to. Dense, beautiful, intricate, haunting, explosive, and dangerous, this is everything rock music aspires to be: intense, incredible songs arranged perfectly and performed with skill and passion. Source Tags and Codes will take you in, rip you to shreds, piece you together, lick your wounds clean, and send you back into the world with a concurrent sense of loss and hope. And you will never, ever be the same.” Score: 10/10.

TUTV: The heydays of TOD, when I followed them on record and live.
This is, without a shadow of a doubt their chef-d’œuvre. Post-punk
passion from start to finish.

Key track: Baudelaire

Time To Act… PUSSY RIOT!

LIKE IN A RED PRISON
Как в красной тюрьме

Gruel-Propaganda, Gruel-Propagandaaaa!

The country has hardly mastered
Mechanized labor
More and more often when I’m working hard
I am rude, don’t know if it’s appropriate.

Local activists flow down the pipeline,
Filling it with life and calling for destruction!

The country has hardly mastered
Mechanized labor.

Federal Penitentiary Service, Interior Ministry,
Emergency Situations Ministry, and Rosnano,
LUKoil, TNK, Rosneft, and Gazprom,

Gruel-Propaganda, Gruel-Propagandaaaa!

Get registration,
Evildoers at the oil towers,
Oil on the tables,
Sechin with crocodiles,
Like in a red prison.

Bathe the worker in the Norwegian fjord,
Cut off your penis like the Depardieu character,
You have a president like Iran’s ayatollah,20
And your church is like it is in the U.A.E.

Evil fucking sexist, leave the hole alone!32
Homophobic vermin, out from history!
Gruel-Propaganda, Gruel-Propagandaaaa!

Don’t fuck with her pussycat,
She spends oil on something else.
In the Mordovian days’ quiet,
She makes salads and sometimes eats them.

Gruel-Propaganda, Gruel-Propagandaaaa!

London Trio LYENA Strom On Brand New Sharp-Guitar-Cutting Slam ‘BOYS TOYS’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

25 February 2022

Band: LYENA
Who: Indie rock trio from London

New single: BOYS TOYS

Omar Mack (vocalist): “The main idea for this track was about the ongoing battle for control currently happening in the UK. It’s about the back-and-forth blame game that happens so often in politics and trickles down to society in an unhealthy way. For ‘Boys Toys’ we really wanted to strip everything back and just focus on a few big hooks. Where we’d usually layer tracks and grow upwards, we tried the opposite and worked from the top down.”

Turn Up The Volume: These young bad-ass wolves attack, rightly so, power-horny politicians of their native Brexit country. And we all should do too with all narcissistic nitwits wherever we live. With Boys Toys the trio makes their point, loud and clear. It’s a sharp-guitar-cutting torpedo going full tilt, no brakes, no looking back until the abrupt end. In between you can shout along with the band to the sizzling chorus. A wild whack! Scream and shout!

Press play and go bonkers…

‘PINK MOON’ Album By NICK DRAKE Released 50 Years Ago Today

Back in time

25 February 2022

Artist: NICK DRAKE
Who: Heart and soul singer-songwriter who became
a legend after his death in, after an overdose of amitriptyline,
a prescribed antidepressant. He was only 26.

Anniversary album: PINK MOON
His third and final LP
Released: 25 February 1972 – 50 years ago today

Rolling Stone wrote: Pink Moon is folk icon Nick Drake’s third and last full album — and at less than 30 minutes, it can seem as starkly foreshortened as the singer’s life, which ended in 1974 when he was 26. But as one of Drake’s friends put it, “If something’s that intense, it can’t be measured in minutes.” Rousing himself out of one of the paralyzing depressions that plagued him in his last years, Drake recorded these 11 tracks in two nights, often in just one take. He accompanies himself only on acoustic guitar, except for the title track, on which he overdubs a brief, lovely piano part.

JOHNNY MARR Launched His 4th Solo Album (A Double One) Today – Stream ‘FEVER DREAMS PTS 1-4’ Here

25 February 2022

Artist: JOHNNY MARR
Who: The former musical director
of indie icons The Smiths
Solo albums: 4 (including the new one)

New album: FEVER DREAMS PTS 1-4
A double one. More info here.
Release: 25 February 2022

Marr:“There’s a set of influences and a very broad sound that I’ve been
developing – really since getting out of The Smiths until now, and I hear
it in this record. There are so many strands of music in it. We didn’t do
that consciously, but I think I’ve got a vocabulary of sound. And I feel
very satisfied that I’ve been able to harness it.”

DIY Magazine: “His perfectly serviceable croon is not quite strong enough
to carry it across 16 long tracks. If only he’d given ‘Lightning People’’ to Liam
Gallagher, it might well have been the soundtrack of the summer. Moments
of greatness are plentiful, but ‘Fever Dreams…’ shines brightest when Marr lets
his guitar do the talking.”
Score: 3/5.

Turn Up The Volume: I love Marr‘s guitar virtuosity, I love his human view
of life and society, I love his coolness, I love his critical attitude vs his old Smiths
buddy and right-wing idiot Morrissey and I loved his live concerts I witnessed yet
I need to be honest and say what I said before about his solo work. He always
comes up with some killers, but also too many mediocre songs on his solo LPs.
I’ll make a compilation of all my favorites on his 4 longplayers. Good idea.

Ahead of the album’s launch, Marr shared 8 songs via 2 EPs…
