The album that’s on repeat today on Turn Up The Volume’s stereo
16 March 2022
Band: BLACK DOLDRUMS
Who: Post-Gothic-punk minds out of London with
key members Sophie Landers and Kevin Gibbard.
Debut album: DEAD AWAKE
Info: The album follows two sold out vinyl EPs and several tours around the UK, EU and US. During this time, Sophie Landers (drums) and Kevin Gibbard (guitar/vocals) have cultivated a die-hard following for their wall of sound of dark shoegazing psychedelia. Their original plans for ‘Dead Awake’ was to travel to New York and record it with Jared Artaud (The Vacant Lots, Alan Vega), but due to the pandemic, they ended up doing a remote but intimate collaboration. In their words, they decided “to stop hiding behind too much reverb and an excessive amount of guitars”, and together with Jared, they reworked a more stripped down version of themselves.
Turn Up The Volume: It was the 2019 EP She Divine that attracted me
to this post-Gothic-punk act. And this notable debut LP strengthen the
attraction even more.
Why? Because they combine the haunting drive of the early Joy Division days
(Sad Paradise, Sleepless Nights and Dreamcatcher), the swirling guitar psych-o-billy
of Danish duo The Raveonettes with the lights out (Runaway and Sidewinder) and
add a couple of sonic tranquilizers to the mix (Into Blue / All For You) that put your
confused mind to rest. Black Doldrums love the midnight hours and so should you.
