Robust Rock And Roll With JW PARIS And New Steamy Sledgehammer ‘ELECTRIC CANDLE LIGHT’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

25 March 2022

Band: JW PARIS (London)

Who: 90S’s grunge and Britpop inspired three-piece featuring
Gemma Clarke, Danny Collins and Aaron Forde. Their first three
released singles Sober, Favourite Thing and Royalty national
and international radio play.

New single: JW PARIS

Danny Collins (vox/guitar): ‘Electric Candle Light is a futuristic analogue nostalgia
fuelled track all about those nights where you seem to fall into a time lapse and wish
for those past better days.”

Turn Up The Volume: Classic rock ‘n roll with a 20th Century fuzz and buzz
vigour. Flaming guitars, heavily pounding drums, and clamorous vocals.

After the electrical intro, a rip-roaring guitar riff storms all the way on this
steaming sledgehammer. If Aerosmith was a punk band they would probably
sound like this. Heavy cracker!

Touchdown…

It’s Only Toronto 1977 But THE STONES Liked It

25 March 2022

In March of 1977 — a year after their reggae-inspired LP Black And
Blue
and a year before Some Girls – rock icons The Rolling Stones
played two secret shows at the El Mocambo club in Toronto in front
of 300 people.

The Stones were named the Cockroaches for this special occasion.

A few recorded songs featured on the 1977 in-concert LP Love You Live.

A new double LP titled El Mocambo 1977 is planned
for release on 13th May. Pre-order info here.

Keith Richards: “We’re up on stage at the El Mocambo
and we never felt better. I mean, we sounded great.”

We get two tasters to satisfy us.

DESTROYER Build Songs On New Album LABYRINTHITIS

25 March 2022

Band: DESTROYER
Who: Indie popsters from Vancouver, Canada
fronted by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar
Active: Since 1995

New album: LABYRINTHITIS – 13th LP
Out: 25 March 2022 – order info here

Pitchfork: “Dan Bejar’s marvelously inscrutable songwriting reaches beyond meaning. On his most live-sounding record in years, he finds clarity when language recedes and the music takes over… Bejar has always been a cryptic songwriter, but on Labyrinthitis he seems intent on piling on associations until they reach beyond meaning itself… Listening to Labyrinthitis feels like how it might feel to be a Thomas Pynchon character: journeying circuitously toward a goal you can’t quite apprehend, accosted by signs and symbols that may be of world-historical importance if they don’t turn out to be nonsense, haunted and comforted by the intuition that all this could easily be a big joke.” Full review here. Score: 8.5/10.

Turn Up The Volume: Destroyer‘s mastermind Dan Bejar is a songwriting architect.
He builds his songs brick by brick. He likes to wander in his labyrinth in his mind, to
lose himself in his own mysterious thoughts but returns on time to finish his sonic construction. Fascinating pop humdingers.

50-Year Old FOO FIGHTERS Drummer TAYLOR HAWKINS Died In His Sleep – R.I.P.

25 March 2022

Shocking. Last night, Taylor Hawkins
the Foo Fighters drummer died in his
sleep. No cause has been revealed yet.

The band broke the news on social media…

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of Taylor Hawkins.
His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go
out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the
utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

FF are on tour in South America. Four days ago they
played at the Lollapalooza festival in Argentina.
Hawkins‘s final concert.

Hawkins was born in Dallas in February 1972. He joined FF in 1997, replacing
original drummer William Goldsmith. Before that, he played for Alanis Morissette
for quite a while.

Short bio here.

He also had his own projects. Firstly Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders
and afterward The Birds of Satan, a spin-off cover band of Chevy Metal.

Yesterday I wrote a piece, planned to publish today, about their brand new EP
titled – what an incredibly irony – Dream Widow. Eight death metal (also incredibly
ironic) and hardcore songs. Of course, I deleted it as this terrible news came in.

.

Hawkins about joining FF: “Me and Dave Grohl just looked like long lost brothers in a weird way. We had a similar vibe and I don’t know why. I remember my friend playing with the Foo Fighters before I met Dave and watching them goof around backstage. He said to me, ‘That
guy could be like your brother’.

Rest in peace.

Happy 80 To The Eternal QUEEN OF SOUL

25 March 2022

The wonderful Aretha Louise Franklin was
born on 25 March 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Happy 80 to the black heroine who started her fantastic music career at the age
of 18. She made no less than 38 studio albums. Her sensational voice, her inspiring
personality, her humanist views on life, and her charismatic looks all contributed to her status of indisputable Queen Of Soul that she was, for several generations. She passed away in 2018, she was 76.

This eternal star deserves so much more than just a little bit of respect…

to no wave, cabaret, chanson, jazz, funk, psychedelia, alternative folk

The first taster from upcoming debut full-length Dancing On A Volcano.

The song is: “An ode to the bottle service girls working LA’s clubs and bars, using tips gained from punters to finance their wider career aspirations in Hollywood and the business world.
It is a celebration of their business prestige, and a positive reflection on the essence of the American Dream and the road to stardom.”

Turn Up The Volume: Imagine the fervid fuzz of punchy guitar pop legends Buzzcocks, with The Stranglers’ Jean-Jacques Burnel on bass, combined with the cutting edginess of today’s post-Brexit-punk rebirth and you know an effervescent ripper is coming your way. Add some American-dream girls of the City of Angles on your imaginary mind-screen and you’re about to start a champagne party in your head.
