Two late lagends, ARETHA FRANKLIN (1942-2018) and charismatic Wham half
GEORGE MICHAEL (1963-2016) teamed up for a song titled I KNEW YOU WERE
WAITING (FOR ME), written by Simon Climie and Dennis Morgan.
The hit single topped the US singles chart 35 years ago today, on 18 April 1987
(also No 1 in the UK). Franklin and Michael won a 1987 Grammy Award for ‘Best
R&B Performance’ by a duo or group.
Aretha Franklin: “The first time I heard George was with Wham! and I liked it then.
He had a very unique sound, very different from anything that was out there. When
Clive Davis, my producer suggested we get together for “I Knew You Were Waiting,”
I was all ready. Musically, it does not grow old.”
Aretha & George were waiting for each other until 1987…
