This Is Not A Love Song – British Metal Music Machine OHTHEKINK! With Mindfucker ‘III MMXXIII’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

30 May 2023

Band: OHTHEKINK!

Who: Bristol based improv band spanning genres of Nu-metal, spoken word, Krautrock, shoegaze, free jazz and beach goth. They have coined the genre ‘lounge metal’, because the music is chilled, slow and moody with a definite metal homage on most tracks. They met on a dating app.

Track: III III MMXXIII

From the band’s debut EP Cybernetics. All lyrics of the songs are based on the book
Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine
by the American mathematician and philosopher Norbert Wiener (1894-1964).

TUTV: Ever heard the almost unlistenable 1975 double LP Metal Music Machine
by the late genius Lou Reed, his to hell with rock ‘n’ roll opus? Well, III III MMXXIII is
a 28-minute mindfucker that actually doesn’t sound like the messed-up MMM, but it evokes the same music-destructive spirit: let’s build something in order to destroy it.

It’s a schizophrenic, psychotic, flipped-out jam infused with petrifying psychedelic guitars, played forward and backward, and ominous bass-lines going everywhere and nowhere. It’s an otherworldly razzle-dazzle trance-trip that seems to go on like forever and ever, while a ghostly voice mumbles words over it.

So, is it good/bad? I don’t think the labeling of good or bad is appropriate here.
The keywords are intriguing, fascinating, enigmatic and what-the-hell-is-going-on.

Put your headphones on.
Get impressed.

20 Knockouts From 1978 – The Year A Female Songstress Topped The UK Singles Chart For The First Time Ever

Going back in time

30 May 2023

1978 was a new-punk-wave year of alternative razzmatazz, sonic turmoil and timeless killer tracks by Buzzcocks, The Clash, Siouxsie and The Banshees Blondie, PIL, Talking Heads and many more.

It was also the first year ever that a female singer-songwriter topped the UK Singles Chart with a self-written song. It was the then 20-year-old wayward artist Kate Bush who did it with her debut single Wuthering Heights in January 1978.

And here Turn Up The Volume‘s 20 Knockouts from 1978 list.

Ooops, 1978 was also the year of Grease and Superman.

British Turbo Tandem ROYAL BLOOD Act Like Spoiled Stars At Festival In Scotland

30 May 2023

(Press photo)

British blues rock turbo ROYAL BLOOD announced details of their upcoming,
4th album, recently. It’s titled Back To The Water and will hit the streets on
September 8.

At the same time, they launched the first single Mountains At Midnight.

So far so good… but last Sunday ROYAL BLOOD played at the BBC’s Radio 1
Big Weekend Music Festival
Camperdown Park in Dundee, Scotland. They played
right in between Niall Horan and Lewis Capaldi but the crowd wasn’t impressed
whatsoever, which made vocalist/bassist Mike Kerr pretty upset calling the audience
pathetic‘. I guess that’s what happens when you think you’re a Godlike rock star.

Fuck you Disloyal Blood.

Pelle Almqvist was born on 29 May 1978 in Fagersta, Sweden.

Happy 44 to the loudmouth of Swedish wacko garage punk rockers THE HIVES.
also know as Howlin’ Pelle. One of the most exciting performers I’ve ever seen
(several times), and I saw a lot.

The band is ready to launch their new, 6th LP, named
The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons on 11 August.

Here’s the first single Bogus Operandi.

THE BARNESTORMERS – Five Rockabilly Heroes Get Together And Have Their Steaming Riff-Hot Debut LP Out Now

29 May 2023

Band: THE BARNESTORMERS
Who: Rockabilly heroes doing it together. Featuring drummer Slim Jim Phantom
from the Stray Cats, Australian guitarist/vocalist Chris Cheney who founded The Living
End
in 1994, former member of British power pop outfit Squeeze, pianist and TV-star Jools Holland and South African renowned producer/engineer Kevin ‘The Caveman’ Shirley who’s the main man in the studio and Scottish-born Australian born musician/singer Jimmy Barnes who started it all.

These four rockabilly addicts just released their self-titled debut LP. Order info here.

NME says: “While it’s the Cold Chisel frontman’s soulful tenor that piques curiosity at first, that’s just one piece of a much more complex and dynamic puzzle: Cheney’s rollicking riffs
gel wonderfully with Shirley’s groovy low-end, while Holland adds some brightness and flare
on the piano. This is ’50s jukebox jamming at it’s rockin’ and rollin’ best.”

Turn Up The Volume: I know it’s only rockabilly, but I like it, they like it and you
should like it to. Expect retro-riff extravaganza, boogie-woogie piano exhilaration, irresistible move ‘n’ groove tunes, rattle and roll electricity, all infused with classic
rawk vocals. Not one dull moment with The Barnestormers. Their debut is a more
than welcome soundtrack in these messed-up times. Move your furniture, invite
your friends and have yourself a sweaty party. Right on!

THE WAEVE – Graham Coxon (Blur) And Rose Elinor Dougall – Kill It On ‘Later With Jools’

British duo THE WAEVE – aka Graham Coxon (Blur) and songstress
Rose Elinor Dougall – uncaged their first collaborative, self-titled album
last February. It got a 80% score on Metacritic (based on 10 reviews).

One of the singles, named KILL ME AGAIN is Turn Up The Volume‘s standout
favourite. It’s a riveting, promptly infectious groove propelled by a pounding
synth/bass riff, spiced with Coxon on saxophone and mesmerizing (duet) vocals.

The duo played it last weekend (along with the mesmeric piece Can I Call You)
on the famous British music show ‘Later… with Jools Holland.’

Listen/watch.

Canadian Post-Punk Act DOWN THE LEES Honor The Iconic French Chansonnier EDITH PIAF On New Single ‘SINCE LA VIE EN ROSE’

Daily noise to load your batteries

29 May 2023

Canadian act DOWN THE LEES, the musical project of singer-songwriter-guitarist
Laura Lee Schultz, returned last April, with their first new music since the end of the
Covid-19 pandemic. Single Dead And Over was/is a grand alive and kicking comeback.

It’s followed now by a brand-new piece
named SINCE C’EST LA VIE EN ROSE.

TUTV: I never ever thought about the possibility that the late great French
chansonnier Édith Piaf, born as Édith Giovanna Gassion in 1915 (yep, I’m a
great fan, with thanks to my parents) would be the star of a post-punk-rock
noise jam.

But it happens here with Canadian act Down The Lees‘ architect Laura Lee Schultz.
She wrote the song during the awful pandemic period. LL dives into the psyche of
Edith Piaf and her tortured fame and eventual demise.

Since C’est La Vie En Rose sounds as turbulent and capricious – with highs and lows,
ups and downs – as the short, tumultuous life of Piaf who passed away in 1963, aged
only 47. The ghostly composition resonates as a slow-burning torch, erupting like a volcano now and then, and with Schultz’s spacey vocals adding an eerie feel to the full
film noir picture developing here. DTL will never regret the making and recording of this black and white pearl. Kudos to them.

I know you felt all alone
Solo, in your microphone

Since la vie en rose
Since la vie en rose

Your time immortal
Stretches on

Since la vie en rose
Since la vie en rose

Did you really think that nobody cared
A tarnished memory
An irresistible need to destroy yourself

Since la vie en rose
Since la vie en rose
Since la vie en rose
