2. ‘All The Times’ by GAE VINCI remixed by THE KVB

Sicilian musician/producer Gae Vinci released his top-notch debut album
Lonely Ballads last May, mixing electronica, psychedelia and electric shoegaze
layers.

To keep the momentum going, renowned British darkwave duo The KVB remixed
All The Times, one of the album’s highlights. Their atmospheric approach adds a heart-warming Depeche Mode-esque vibe.

The accompanying, eye-catching video was an idea of Gae Vinci, who
chose and edited clips, transposing into visual The KVB‘s sound.

3. ‘Swan’ by KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD (Australia)

Last Friday these ridiculously productive psych-prog rockers from down under unleashed their 25th album in 13 years. Hallelujah. On The Silver Cord they swapped guitars for electronica.

Swan is a great example of it. Yes, the Aussies go disco.

Baltimore‘s synth-pop act FUTURE ISLANDS present their 7th album,
baptized People Who Aren’t There Anymore next year, on January 26.

6. ‘Ghostwriter’ by STRESS DOLLS (Buffalo, NY)

Stress Dolls is the moniker of American alt/pop/rock artist Chelsea O’Donnell.

Ghostwriter is the 2nd single off her upcoming debut album.

“There are many times where I don’t really know what a song is about until long after
I write it, and “Ghostwriter” was no exception. I came to recognize it as a metaphor about my relationship to anxiety: I want to be the narrator of my own story, but there are lots of times where I feel like my anxious feelings take the reins, even if I don’t want them to. I take the credit, or blame, for my own actions, but the metaphor of anxiety as a ‘ghostwriter’ felt fitting to me.”

Ghostwriter is a speedy, shivering and steamrollin’ indie pop tune with
some surprisingly exciting violin play embedded in an guitar-driven flair.

7. ‘It Goes On’ by WAASH

“I find myself writing about moving on and freeing yourself from bad vibes quite often. I guess it’s just the theme of my life, and these songs are my way of meditating on these relationships and finding peace with it.”

It Goes On is a jangly psych-pop dream propelled by glowing
guitars and has a galvanic chorus that sticks instantly.

Press play.

8. ‘You Be Good’ by ARIH SK (Ontario, Canada)

(Credit: Amber Lee Williams)

Arih SK is an artist living and working in St. Catharines, Ontario. He’s known for writing short, slightly upbeat songs with simple melodies about loss, nostalgia, family, and relationships.

“This song is inspired by Alex The Parrot, who was part of the avian learning experiment. He could tell between different colours and shapes, could count, and he was the first non-human animal to have ever asked a question (what colour am I?). Sadly, the experiment was abruptly ended by Alex’s untimely death. The chorus of the song borrows Alex’s last words, which were the same words he said at the end of every day’s session: “You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow. My daughter Olive sings on this track with me.

‘You Be Good’ is a sweet, tender and catchy father/daughter lullaby. Lovely!

Sing along.

9. ‘The End Of Apathy’ by TEJON STREET CORNER THIEVES (US)

This US outlaw alt-folk group have come a long way since their humble beginnings when they used to busk for loose change, actually taking their name from a time when they were accused of stealing a corner on Tejon Street in their home city of Colorado Springs during a turf war between rival buskers.

Last week they released their brand new
full length, baptized Juxtaposition.

The End Of Apathy is one of the stand out tracks on the record.
A punky folk chant fueled with manic mandolin riffage.

Top.

10. ‘Autumn’ by THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM (New Jersey, US)

New Jersey‘s Americana rockers launched their new,
6th LP, titled History Books. It’s simply one of their best.

This melancholic power ballad is one of the notable scores

British Dream Pop Explores BDRMM Overwhelmed Antwerp, Belgium

Live

29 October 2023

British dream pop explores BDRMM launched their 2nd LP, titled I Don’t Know
last June, confirming their huge songwriting potential of their sublime 2020 debut LP
Bedroom.

Ryan Smith (songwriter/vocalist) in an interview with NME: “I’d describe it as the second chapter, the themes are still the same, I definitely had to hone it in because some of my lyrics were pretty to the point. That was an important part of it though. It’s a way of vocalising my own fucking inner turmoil and sharing it with three of my best mates. They understand and they help me shape it into something that people can really enjoy. The listeners can make their own mind up and that’s what we were striving for.”

Fabulous symphonic single ‘It’s Just A Bit Of Blood’

Last week they played in Antwerp, Belgium and it was one of the best gigs I saw this year.

And for them one of the best they played in 2023, as Smith said at one point ‘this is fucking surreal’. It wasn’t about copying/pasting the LPs’ highlights. Not all, they build a titanic and astounding wall of psychedelia sound that got the crowd into a trance from start to finish. Awesome, just awesome.

Soulful Sunday With Daydreamers GRANDADDY And Their New Sweet Musing ‘WATERCOOLER’

29 October 2023

Californian melancholia rockers GRANDADDY, now centred more
than ever around singer-songwriter Jason Lytle announced a new LP,
their sixth. It’s named BLU WAV a will appear on 16 February 2024.
More info here.

The first single is named WATERCOOLER

LYTLE: “Most of my relationships have involved girls who worked in office settings.
This song is about the end of one, or perhaps a few, of those relationships. Listeners
will also notice the pedal steel on this track and eventually on many others from the forthcoming new album. It’s a first for Grandaddy, and I couldn’t be more thrilled
about this fact.”

First thing. I never heard a song about a watercooler.
Second thing. Lytle still writes sweet musings and his
soft voice is still instrumental for those musings.

2nd LP ROOM ON FIRE 20 years ago, on 28 October 2003.

NME review: “‘Room On Fire’ is a refining and tinkering with The Strokes sound,
a carefully calibrated attempt not to fuck up too early in the face of untold temptations.
The results are still sleek, sexy and thrilling, with a tantalising promise of even better
to come.”

Score: 4.5/5

HANA PIRANHA – Natural Born Rock Star Stuns With High-Powered Single ‘LORELEI’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

29 October 2023

Artist: HANA PIRANHA
Who: Singer/multi-instrumentalist who grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, and
moved to England at the age of twelve to pursue her dream of becoming a concert violinist. Disillusioned with the world of classical music, she began pushing boundaries both in art and in life – the two becoming so intertwined that it became hard to know where one ended and the other began. To Piranha, life is nothing but an opportunity to create art, which is why she opens her diary so candidly to the world.

Piranha: “Lorelei was inspired by my ex-boyfriend, who I was in a really abusive relationship with. I feel lucky to have actually survived that relationship, it was just really dark, so the song is about that quite explicitly. I chose Lorelei, a mythical mermaid who lures sailors to their deaths, so it makes it a bit of a revenge song too. It’s why we chose to make the music video underwater”.

New single: LORELEI

Info: On hearing ‘Lorelei’ and seeing the video, it’s easy to see where Piranha’s influences reside. Woven into the fabric are catchy synth lines reminiscent of Muse or Nine Inch Nails, squalling string arrangements like PJ Harvey, and the presence of crunching guitars that round out all great rock anthems.

The song features on her new album, titled ‘Wingspan, out on 17th November.

Impressive single artwork

TUTV: Lorelei could be on the soundtrack of a rock opera with its rich
orchestration and robust roller coaster structure. Piranha‘s voice pushes
this high-powered stunner, from spoken-word verses to monumental
vocals on the chorus, to a melodramatic high.

The magnetizing impact of the instrumental synth-driven part, midway,
creates a sonic tension that evolves into a stirring finale fading out
with haunting violins and an enigmatic rustle. Piranha looks/sings like
a natural-born rock star.

Top score!

SEX SWING – Thundering London-Based Post-Punk Team Blow Your Mind On Record And On Stage

29 October 2023

SEX SWING is a mind-boggling London-based post-punk team
with members of implicitly trusted yet sonically nefarious outfits
Mugstar, Part Chimp, Earth, Dethscalator and Dead Neanderthals.

In 2020 they released their flabbergasting LP,
named TYPE II. Stream it below.

Flabbergasting

A new longplayer is in the making, but before it comes
out SS released a 6-track live album last month.

GRADE A PEANUT SAUCE features 4 smashing highlights of TYPE II. These manic motherrockers put you in a chaotic trance for 44 minutes. Expect blood-curdling, Krautrock-tastic and brain-breaking hullabaloo embedded in a pitch-black pool of
infernal psychedelia.

Artwork album

The album was recorded at Sonic Whip Festival in Nijmegen, Netherlands,
on 6th May 2022 with Otto Kokke of befriended band Dead Neanderthals
on sax.

RELEASE THE BATS

.

Last night the electrifying emotions I experienced with the live album were even more intense when I saw/heard Sex Swing in a dark historic basement (perfect location for them) in my hometown of Ghent Belgium.

They thundered like a bulldozer on the run. Rowdy and hefty with Dan Chandler screaming his lungs out, with saxophonist Colin Webster blowing his lungs out and with the rest of the band developing a trembling Eurostar buzz. Puzzling psychedelia at its blustering best. Wowzers.

Irish superstars U2 extended their series of concerts at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Last Friday they invited LADY GAGA who played with the Stones only 7 days ago in

for the exquisite power ballad Sweet Sounds Of Heaven from their new LP

Pretty impressive.
