London‘s techno act LEG PUPPY 2.0 must be the hardest working one in EBM land.
Last May they released their umpteenth album in a very short timespan. It’s titled Humanity 2.0. Their best so far, thematically and sonically. You can read TUTV’s
review here.
And they already have a new statement to share with us.
The late genial pop-art artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) had a
pretty sharp vision on art: “Art is what you can get away with.”
Californian noise explores XIU XIU aren’t the lazy kind of artists. In their 22 years of recording they made 13 LPs, with last year’s sublime Ignore Grief as the most recent
one.
In the meantime, they moved from L.A. to Berlin where
they experienced a new stream of inspiration.
I have no idea what they want to express with this title.
What I do know is, that this is a Frank Beltrame knife.
The first single is titled COMMON LOON. A pretty accessible
electronica piece of music propelled by a steadfast drum beat.
Jamie Stewart (vocalist/instrumentalist): “The song “Common Loon,” for us, is about reveling in perversity, cuckooness, queerness and/or the unquenchable personal requirement to wild out. As MASSIVE fans of Alicia McDazzler’s [McDaid] work, we could think of no one else more qualified to embody those ways of being and no one else who would crank them up further than we would have ever imagined. She is an inspiration and icon to all LOONS!”
Its video clip was directed by performance artist Alicia McDaid. McDaid also stars in the video as a slew of characters, including, but not limited to: Britney Spears, Smurfette, Anna Nicole Smith Joker, Led Zeppelin groupie, Jason Voorhees, Frida Kardashian, goth Monica Geller, Carmela Soprano, Bret Michaels,, Andy Warhol and more.
Experimental prog-jazz-rock luminary and improvisation wizard FRANK ZAPPA
(1940-1993) and his MOTHERS OF INVENTION turned traditional guitar rock
upside down from the mid-60s on.
They released countless studio albums, and several live LPs, although Zappa
used to say about the live ones: “It’s pretty hard to record what we do because
it gets so loud and ugly.”
Another concert album from the archives is now available. It’s the registration
of their 3-set concert at the legendary L.A. nightclub Whisky A Go Go in 1968.
It’s spread over 5LPs/3 CDs including some collector’s stuff. Order info here.
Press info: “On July 23, 1968, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention took over the Whisky a Go Go for an all-night affair. The entire evening was recorded with the possibility of an album project. Although bits and pieces were released by Zappa over the years, a full live album never happened, and the tapes sat in the Vault for 55 years. Now all three sets by The Mothers are being released with brand new 2023 mixes on 3-CD, 5LP and a 2-LP Highlights edition with liner notes by Joe Travers, Pamela Des Barres (The GTO’s), and an interview between Alice Cooper and Ahmet Zappa.
It’s a historic document that shows the geniality of his orchestrated cacophony on stage,
switching all sort of genres from left to right and coming up with freakish improvisations. There’s also a lot of his legendary comical chatter in between songs too. A must-have for Zappa addicts.
In order to not miss a beat Turn Up The Volume scans the musical
horizon daily (doing it for years now, actually) to stay in touch with
all new things sonically great and shares the results on a weekly
basis.

Punk legends X hit the underground scene of Los Angeles back in
1977, they had a couple of hiatuses but never called it quits until
now.
All 4 original members, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake and Billy Zoom,
announced in a press statement that they finished the recordings of their 9th
and final LP.
They named itSMOKE & FICTION and will share it with
their old and young fans on August 2. More info here.
Exene Cervenka: “X is a great band name; also a bad idea sometimes when it gets lost in print or on the marquee. Gotta have a sense of humor. We all did in the early days. Los Angeles was a carnival of weirdness back then, with left over traces of silent movie stars, long haired hippies, bikers, and brand new self-defined punks doing anything we wanted. When we started touring the country we found like-minded people everywhere, and somehow they all found us. Even if the X was lost on the old marquee.”
X celebrate themselves with this sassy steamroller.
They really do the good punk times roll again.
40 years ago today, on 25 June 1984, the late musical genius PRINCE (1958-2016) released his massive masterpiece album PURPLE RAIN.
It was his 6th LP and was the soundtrack of the film of the same name that hit
the cinemas the year before. It topped the album chart in the US, in Australia,
in Canada, in The Netherlands and was Top-10 in countless other countries.
