JOHN & JOHN 50 Years Ago Today In MSG In NYC

JOHN LENNON and his PLASTIC ONO BAND scored a #1 hit in the US
50 years ago, on 16 November 1974. His only Number One in America,
during his lifetime). It peaked at #36 in the UK.

Elton John played piano on it and did some harmony vocals. He made
a deal with the late genial Beatle that if the song reached No.1, Lennon
would have to join him as a guest at one of Elton‘s shows in Madison
Square Garden in NYC.

Lennon kept his promise and played 3 songs
with John a few weeks later on 28 Nov 1974,
today 50 years ago.

Melbourne-based rock team DELIVERY released
their debut LP Forever Shaking Hands in 2022.

They have finished the recordings of the follow-up.
Force Majeure will see the day of light on 17 Jan 2025.

They just dropped single #4, titled THE NEW ALPHABET

James Lynch (singer/guitarist): ā€œWeirdly and unintentionally, The New Alphabet is something of a spiritual twin to ā€˜The Complexā€™ from our first album; both tracks come in at number six on the record, are built around wonky guitars over a slightly loosened groove, and both share a similar lyrical concept that I sometimes revert back to for Delivery. Which is, taking on the perspective of a character who thinks theyā€™re topshit, when itā€™s glaringly obvious that theyā€™re not.ā€

The New Alphabet is a tremendously jangly thrill,
think Tom Verlaine‘s Television on amphetamines,
and accompanied by a madcap video clip.

THE SHANGRI-LAS – American Girl Group Topped The US Charts 60 Years Ago Today With Teenage Tragedy Hit ‘LEADER OF THE PACK’

THE SHANGRI-LAS was an American
girl group that scored several hits
between 1963 and 1968.

Their biggest one was LEADER OF THE PACK.
It topped the US Charts 60 years ago today,
on 28 November 1964.

The song was labelled a “teenage tragedy song“.

It’s about a girl named Betty, who is dating Jimmy, the leader of a motorcycle gang. Betty‘s heart turns to despair as she bemoans her parents’ disapproval. The parents say Jimmy hails from “the wrong side of town” and ask Betty to tell Jimmy goodbye and find someone new. Betty reluctantly does as she is asked, and a crushed and tearful Jimmy speeds off on his motorcycle. Betty‘s pleas for Jimmy to slow down are in vain and Jimmy crashes on a rain-slicked surface and dies.

SLEAFORD MODS & HOT CHIP – A Surprisingly Cool Collaboration For Charity, For ‘WARCHILD’

Rap-punk poets SLEAFORD MODS and synth-pop stars HOT CHIP teamed up to collect money for help organization WARCHILD, an independent non-government organization founded in 1993. The organization works with parents, caregivers, community members, NGOs, governments, corporations, and other partners worldwide to ensure that children have access to protection, education and psychosocial support.

An unlikely collaboration, but it’s pretty cool that they do it together for charity.
They recorded 2 frisky punk-disco tracks in Londonā€™s famed Abbey Road studios.
They were printed on 7″ vinyl, but sold out in an eye blink. But you can buy the
digital version on Bandcamp, below.

Joe Goddard (Hot Chip): ā€œMaking these songs over the course of one day at Abbey Road
was a great experience. We arrived without a plan but quickly began working together in
a harmonious way, with lots of improvisation and very little ego. We are very grateful to Sleaford Mods for joining us and very proud of the result.ā€

Band: NEKO
Who: Post-krautrock/electronica hybrid from Bristol with sprawling
soundscapes and glistening melodies. The euphoric place where
Mogwai and Air meet, a shimmering soundtrack.

Track: ALMOST FORGOTTEN
Lead piece from their brand-new
4-track EP Windfall.

It’s a more mature collection of songs than its predecessor, debut EP
King Louie (fewer songs about 5 a side football, more songs about
complicated IT jobs and desperate attempts to avoid middle-aged spread)
that sees the band, now with vocalist Yuka Suzuki as a full-time member,
polish and develop their distinctive sound.

TUTV: Almost Forgotten is that kind of sneaky track that gets under
your skin slowly but surely. Inflammable tension in the air with a
magnetic impact on your aural radar.

Like hypnotizing, sonic foreplay building up the edgy momentum
along its delirious way, fed by a feisty bass/drum tandem, spooky
synths and anxious vocals.

You can feel the climax coming. Repeat buttons were
invented for psychedelic hallucinations like this one.

STEVE ALBINI Street Revealed Near His Studio In CHICAGO

Last May the music world was shocked when the sad news of
the sudden death of renowned producer STEVE ALBINI came
in. He died of a heart attack, only 61.

He produced so many artists/bands with Kim Deal as one
of the most recent ones. Albini produced her brand-new solo
album Nobody Loves You More.

It was so weird to see that a couple of weeks later Albini‘s band
Shellac, had their 6th LP, named TO ALL TRAINS, out. One of
the best albums of 2024 on my list.

Yesterday, a street arrow near his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago,
renamed Steve Albini Way, was officially revealed. Kim Deal spoke
at the ceremony and the Mekons and Jeff Tweedy played some songs.

Kim Deal: ā€œHe was a flawed human; he would contradict himself in two sentences.
But at his core he understood the value of each person. Well, not each person. If you
were a bully, he wouldnā€™t like you at all. Maybe he stuck up for people too hard. He
wanted to stick up for the underdogs. He really didnā€™t like ā€˜winners.ā€™ I think he liked
people with a good, healthy dose of low self esteem.ā€
