Significant longplayers from yesteryear

1 October 2025

Band: THE LA’S (Liverpool)
Who: Indie pop heroes from Liverpool, fronted by Lee Mavers
and John Power on bass and backing vocals. Power left the band
after this debut to form his own, named Cast , who were one of
the support acts for the UK dates on the Oasis reunion tour.

Active: 1983–1992, 1994–1995,
2005, 2011

They released their eponymous LP, their one
and only, on 1 October 1990, today 35 years ago.

AllMusic/Stephen Erlewine: “Some albums exist outside of time or place,
gently floating on their own style and sensibility. Of those, the La’s lone album
may be the most beguiling, a record that consciously calls upon the hooks and
harmonies of 1964 without seeming fussily retro, a trick that anticipated the
cheerful classicism of the Brit-pop ’90s.

Mavers about the LP at the time: “We hate it. It never captured anything
that we were about. To cut a long story short, too many cooks spoil the broth.”
