AMERICAN II: UNCHAINED, the 2nd part of JOHNNY CASH‘s
American Recordings series came out on 5 November 1996, today
30 years ago. Like the others, it was produced by Rick Rubin.
It was the man in black’s 82nd LP.
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
were his backing band on all tracks.
Unchained‘s featured only 3 Cash compositions, and covers
of songs by Jude Johnston, Tom Petty, Spain, Beck, Soundgarden,
Hank Snow and others.
AllMusic in retrospect: “If Unchained didn’t seem like an event or an instant classic
like its immediate predecessor, it confirmed Cash was still a vital artist with plenty of
life in him, no mean feat for a man of 64 who’d been making records for more than
40 years.”
