Soulful Sunday With THE NATIONAL On The Telly Playing ‘SPACE INVADER’

Reveries for the laziest day of the week

Cincinnati’s daydreamers THE NATIONAL, fronted by natural born crooner
Matt Berninger, released two LPs this year, First Two Pages of Frankenstein (April)
and Laugh Track (September).

They’re on an extensive tour right now, but made time to perform on American TV
on The Late Show, last week. They played SPACE INVADER from Laugh Track.

Enchanting.

Have A Nap In La La Land With KURT VILE And His New EP ‘BACK TO THE MOON BEACH’

19 November 2023

Former War On Drugs emo slacker KURT VILE has a
new 9-track EP out, named BACK TO MOON BEACH.

“It’s is an EP by no one’s definition but Kurt Vile’s. Clocking in at just shy of an hour, this would be a long full-length record by most any other artist’s yardstick, but for Kurt, the collection is an expression of just how deep his well of non-album material runs.”

Far Out Mag: “Vile invites us to join him on his beach on the moon. Although Back to Moon Beach sounds warm and familiar, particularly to pre-existing fans, Vile does keep that one toe firmly pointed towards the future. Compiling album rejects and covers recorded across the last four years, the record is also a demonstration of his growth and influences.”

TUTV: This new Vile record is for Vile fanatics. I usual love his drift away vibe, but here
I almost fell asleep midway. After the pretty lovely opener/single ‘Another Good Year For
The Roses
‘ it’s downhill. Half of the songs are too lazy, too relaxing, too whiny.

My advice: sit down, dim the lights, relax and have a nap in la-la land.

SHARON VAN ETTEN And Her New Song ‘CLOSE TO YOU’ For New TV Series ‘THE BUCCANEERS’

Reveries for the laziest day of the week

12 November 2023

Photo by Turn Up The Volume – Antwerp, Belgium, 2022

Last year grand songstress-voice SHARON VAN ETTEN, born in New Jersey
started her career in 2007. Since then she recorded/released 6 studio LPs,
with last year’s We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong as her best, so far,
to my ears.

Lately she started writing new music for films/series soundtracks.
CLOSE TO YOU is one of the 2 songs she wrote for the soundtrack
of The Buccaneers.

A drama TV series, about American society girls in England, based on the unfinished novel of the same name by American novelist Edith Wharton published posthumously in 1938. The series premiered last week on Apple TV+. Also on the soundtrack Lucius, Warpaint, Bully, and the Kills’ Alison Mosshart, and more.

Soulful Sunday With Daydreamers GRANDADDY And Their New Sweet Musing ‘WATERCOOLER’

29 October 2023

Californian melancholia rockers GRANDADDY, now centred more
than ever around singer-songwriter Jason Lytle announced a new LP,
their sixth. It’s named BLU WAV a will appear on 16 February 2024.
More info here.

The first single is named WATERCOOLER

LYTLE: “Most of my relationships have involved girls who worked in office settings.
This song is about the end of one, or perhaps a few, of those relationships. Listeners
will also notice the pedal steel on this track and eventually on many others from the forthcoming new album. It’s a first for Grandaddy, and I couldn’t be more thrilled
about this fact.”

First thing. I never heard a song about a watercooler.
Second thing. Lytle still writes sweet musings and his
soft voice is still instrumental for those musings.

Soulful Sunday With Welsh Dreamers DESERT LIFE And Their New Bittersweet Ballad ‘SPHERE’

Reveries for the laziest day of the week

1 October 2023

Artist: DESERT LIFE
Who: Hailing from the serene landscapes of West Wales, Desert Life – the brainchild of singer-songwriter Chris Swales – emerges as a captivating voice in the realm of Alt-folk music. Drawing inspiration from a childhood enriched by the cultural tapestries of Saudi Arabia and the melodic allure of Counting Crows‘ album, Desert Life‘s sonic expedition began to unfurl its wings in 2018.

New single: SPHERE

Swales: “Sphere is a delve into anxiety, and how the night can trigger increased fear and worry. It was written during the pandemic when I witnessed how some friends struggled with their mental health. The song is an observation about others, it also captured my own memory of when I have been in a similar situation. People may relate if they’ve ever lay in bed worrying about things.”

TUTV: Sphere is a bittersweet meditation about angst and mental health issues and the related worries. Despite the mind-disturbing theme, the song has a heartwarming feel. The melancholic melodiousness and gripping vocality of this graceful ballad stand out and affect instantly. Enchanting.

Soulful Sunday With The 151st (Yes, 151) WILLIE NELSON Longplayer ‘BLUEGRASS’

Lazy music for the laziest day of the week

17 September 2023

The Texan country icon WILLIE NELSON
celebrated his 90th birthday last April.

And last Friday, the imperishable songsmith star released his 151st LP, yes 151.
I guess this must be a Guinness World Record (note to myself: look it up). His very
first LP, titled …And Then I Wrote appeared in 1962. That means that, the new one included, Nelson released 2,5 albums a year in his career. One wonders how he still
had the time to love so many girls.

Anyway. The new LP is titled BLUEGRASS. It features
12 bluegrass interpretations of 12 of his own classics.

It’s Sunday, the day my ears want to recover from the noise
they had to endure all week long. Enter Willie Nelson.

Time to relax.

Soulful Sunday With LED ZEPPELIN And A Previously Unreleased 50 Year Old Track Named ‘THE SEASONS’

Reveries for the laziest day of the week

3 September 2023

Last March bombast-blues-rock icons LED ZEPPELIN celebrated
the 50th anniversary of their 5th longplayer HOUSES OF THE HOLY.

For the occasion, Zep‘s guitar hero Jimmy Page came up with a previously
unreleased track created during the sessions for Houses Of The Holy.

It’s called THE SEASONS. An instrumental arrangement
that eventually led to the album’s track The Rain Song.

Page: “My original idea for the opening tracks for Houses of the Holy was that a short overture would be a rousing instrumental introduction with layered electric guitars that would segue in to The Season, later to be titled The Rain Song. Again there would be a contrasting acoustic guitar instrumental movement with melotron that could lead to the first vocal of the album and the first verse of the song. The Seasons was a memo to myself as a reminder of the sequence of the song and various ideas I’d had for it in its embryonic stage.”

Enjoy.
