The revered 76-year-old British songstress LINDA THOMPSON (former wife of
folk hero Richard Thompson) has a new album coming up, named PROXY MUSIC.

First single ‘The Solitary Traveller’

She has limited singing capabilities now due to a rare vocal condition, so
she invited several friends to do the job, including John Grant, Rufus Wainwright,
Martha Wainwright, Eliza Carthy, The Proclaimers, Dori Freeman, and more, along
with many talented Thompsons, her children Teddy and Kami, and her ex-husband
Richard Thompson playing guitar on several tracks.

Linda: “Music in my family. It’s like glue. It binds us.”

I guess you don’t need really a clue to know what/who inspired the album artwork, right?

AMAZING ALBUM ARTWORK – 5 x XTC

British alt-pop-rock outfit XTC was formed in 1972, named Star Park (until 1974),
than became the Helium Kidz for a year, followed by the band’s famous name XTC.

They fabricated a total of 14 longplayers, including 2 under the moniker of The Dukes of Stratosphear before calling it a day in 2006. TUTV picked these 5 amazing album covers.

and Donald Fagen ((born January 10, 1948)

Album: CAN’T BUY A THRILL
Their debut LP
#17 in the US

The artwork is a photo montage by Robert Lockart, featuring prostitutes, standing in
a red-light area from Rouen in France, chosen because of its relevance to the album
title.

Becker and Fagan about the artwork: “That album possessed the most hideous
album cover of the seventies, bar none, except perhaps Can’t Buy a Thrill.”

Celebrated Americana singer-songwriter-pianist BRUCE HORNSBY‘s
6th LP, named SPIRIT TRAIL celebrates its 25th anniversary. It was
released on 13 October 1998. A special edition will be available from
27 October on. More info here.

I know the man and the kind of music he plays, but I’m not familiar with all of his songs/LPs. Anyway, when I saw Spirit Trail‘s front cover, now for its 25-year deluxe
edition, I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s a hilarious image. It depicts Hornsby‘s uncle, Charles
Hornsby.

Amazing Album Artwork From The Past – ‘RELAYER’ By YES (1974)

RELAYER by British
prog-rock legends YES.

Their 7th LP (double one)
Released: 28 November 1974
No 4 in the UK / No 5 in the US

Artwork designed by the band’s all-time artist/collaborator Roger Dean (aged 78 now).
His idea was to depict “a giant gothic cave, a sort of fortified city for military monks”.
It was/is his fav YES album artwork.

Eye-catching album artwork from the past

Singular voice and songwriter TOM WAITS (now aged 73) released his
outstanding 8th LP, titled SWORDFISHTROMBONES 40 years ago, in 1983.

AllMusic said: “Artistically, Swordfishtrombones marked an evolution of which Waits had not seemed capable (though there were hints of this sound on his last two Asylum albums), and in career terms it reinvented him.” Score: 5/5.

Artwork: A photograph by Michael E. Rush showing Waits with Angelo Rossitto (1908-1991) an American actor and voice artist who had dwarfism (2’11” / 89 cm) tall, and was often billed as Little Angie or Moe and Lee Kolima (1920-1995), also an actor who started his film career after being a professional wrestler in the 50s.

Kolima also appeared on Bob Dylan‘s album The Basement Tapes.

Amazing Album Artwork From The Past – Cover Of ‘THINK TANK’ By BLUR Released 20 Years Ago Today

20 years ago today, on 5 May 2003, BLUR released their 7th,
critcially praised album THINK TANK. It topped the UK charts.

Artwork: The cover was stenciled by the British
graffiti artist and political activist Bansky.

Despite Banksy stating that he normally avoids commercial work he later defended
his decision to do the cover, saying: “I’ve done a few things to pay the bills, and I did the
Blur album. It was a good record and the commission was quite a lot of money.

I think that’s a really important distinction to make. If it’s something you actually believe in, doing something commercial doesn’t turn it to shit just because it’s commercial. Otherwise you’ve got to be a socialist rejecting capitalism altogether, because the idea that you can
marry a quality product with a quality visual and be a part of that even though it’s capitalistic
is sometimes a contradiction you can’t live with. But sometimes it’s pretty symbiotic, like the Blur situation.”

Artwork: by art-punk musician and all around creative artist SSION.

SSION: “I had never used Photoshop before. I feel like that’s part of the reason that it looks
the way it looks. I just didn’t know what I was doing. At the same time I think that’s sort of what they were after. Karen sent me that movie Wild Style [Charlie Ahearn’s 1983 cult hip- hop film]. She was really into how when you go on the subway or whatnot, there’s tons of flyers on top of one another, and things get peeled away so there’s all these layers. It looks like beautiful, and trashy – it’s that feeling of New York. For me, it was something that’s retro.”

YYYs released a short film to celebrate the 20th birthday of that debut album.
