5 BEST ALBUMS OF THE MONTH – APRIL 2025

2 May 2025

Album artwork

Band: THE WATERBOYS
Who: Scottish pop-rock-folk heroes orchestrated by
songsmith Mike Scott with 16 LPs, new on included,
on their most impressive résumé.

New Album: LIFE, DEATH AND DENNIS HOPPER

Press info: “Inspired entirely by the life and mythos of actor Dennis Hopper, Mike Scott and The Waterboys created this expansive album as tribute to one of American popular culture’s most compelling public figures. Deeply conceptual, this album of all original songs brings together high-profile featured artists like Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, and Steve Earle to musically weave through Hopper’s life, including a song for each of Hopper’s wives.”

TUTV: This an amazing piece of work. A soundtrack for a yet to be made Dennis Hopper documentary. Hats off to Mike Scott for his boldness, imaginativeness, and ingenuity to score this musical movie, constructed marvellously with its sonically cinematic versatility.

Pop, rock, blues, country, bar-room jazz, and musing balladry take turns and puzzle
a most coherent and highly entertaining whole together, spiced with magnificent vocal contributions by Fiona Apple, Steve Earle and others. Never a dull moment with its varied stream of top-tier songs and Scott‘s awe-inspiring vocality throughout.

Movie shots from Hopper‘s parts in doom and gloom films such as Blue Velvet, Apocalypse Now, True Romance, Speed and, of course, counterculture classic Easy Rider pop up on the screen in your head. He was at his best when he played psychotic characters. And Scott is here at its best too. Can’t stopping listening to it and discover new things with every spin I know it’s only April but this pièce de résistance is, unquestionably, a contender for album of the year. Let’s fuck.

Band: THE MOONLANDINGZ
Who: English electro-pop combo started by the Eccentronic Research Council
duo, featuring Adrian Flanegan and Dean Honor back in 2015. Lias Saoudi (Fat
White Family, Decius
, author, modern day, philosopher) joined them, as well as
different guests.

Album: NO ROCKET REQUIRED
The follow-up to their top-drawer 2018 debut LP
Interplanetary Class Classics, produced by Sean Lennon.

Press info: “No Rocket Required delivers brassy squawks, motorik convulsions and
sinister soothing vocals from a righteous line-up of guest singers and ranters: Nadine
Shah, Iggy Pop, Jessica Winter
and Ewen Bremner. Plus, of course, there’s The Moonlandingz’ own front man, Johnny Rocket aka Lias Saoudi.

What to do, as we potter and fret, as we watch bodies, homes and lives destroyed every day while our elected leaders, so forensic and so sensible, use their weasel words, shrug their coward shoulders and saunter off to raise our bus fares. Dancing of course and togetherness, looking out for each other, and that’s not enough. What kind of fight are we bringing? We will always need to organise, to fight, to collaborate, to connect and to dance dance dance. And that is what The Moonlandingz do.”

TUTV: Where the first album was a 24-hour party affair, this 2nd one is musically a
sonic melting pot of 70s disco (like Sign Of A Man that clearly is inspired by 1978 classic Born To Be Alive by Patrick Hernandez) and 80s house (like Yama Yama) uppers and midnight hour downers (like Roustabout, and the romantic ballad It’s Where I’m From with perfectly matching vocals by the one and only Iggy Pop) that messes with your mind, body and soul.

To make sure that you hit the (dance)floor in the end, Flanegan and Honor knock you
out with the 9-minute hyperkinetic brainbreaker The Knack Drought Suite (Pts 1-3) that hammers your head in relentlessly and gives the last word to film-noir crooner Lias
Saoudi
. Lyrically, NRR echoes Twin Peaks‘ unhinged stories from the dark side of the
human psyche. Everybody happy now? I definitely am.

Artist: ANIKA
Who: British, Berlin-based songstress. She released two splendid
albums with indie band Exploded View and has her 4th solo one
out now.

Album: ABYSS

Press info: “Anika channels her frustration, anger, and confusion with the world.
The album captures raw energy with minimal overdubs, resulting in a visceral and
urgent 10-track journey fueled by intense emotions.

Abyss reflects Anika’s desire to create a space where people can unite and feel free to express themselves amidst the chaos of the world. With influences ranging from 90s grunge and Courtney Love to Patti Smith and Genesis P-Orridge, the album is driven by
a rebellious spirit.”

Press

TUTV: Abyss is sonically, her most heavy-laden longplayer. From revved-up pop crazing (Hearsay / Honey / Last Song) to psych rock shocks (Abyss / Oxygen / Out Of The Shadows).
It’s Anika Vs Anika and the outside world as she makes clear in Walk Away with the lines “The truth is, I don’t really like myself / And the truth is / I don’t really like anyone else.”

Anika still struggles with all kinds of demons (media moguls, a broken relationship, being trapped in your own narrative, patriarchy, toxic masculinity, and other mind-destroying dangers). Eventually, she’s at her best when she faces and fights her worst nightmares and she knows she’s not alone. We’re all in it together. We should try not to hate each other and be tolerant for a chance. L’union fait la force. 2025 is Anika‘s year.

Band: VIAGRA BOYS
Who: Swedish punk-rock dropouts fronted
by the human tattoo Sebastian Murphy.

New album: VIAGR ABOYS
Not their smartest LP title, but
already their 4th one.

Press info: “The LP sees VB turn inwards, leaving the acid-laced, conspiracy-addled societal commentary of previous LP Cave World behind to journey into the acid-laced, conspiracy-addled landscape within. Absurd, intense and surprisingly tender, viagr aboys shuts out the noise to find that the important part of being alive in the big, stupid world is figuring out that the world inside of you that is equally big and stupid.”

Press photography by Fredrik Bengtsson

TUTV: At their core, Viagra Boys still are the mean groove machine we know from
their swirling start. Whether they speed up, slow down, or move somewhere in
between (except for the closing, tender piano ballad), they always have an intense
impact on your body’s movements.

Wordsmith Murphy still keeps on rattling and rap-like rolling non-stop, but the overall
sonic vibe is more varied this time. From catchingly capricious to one-direction punk crazy, to sultry saxy. I’m not sure all the time what Murphy rambles about, but our messed-up times are always in the middle of his bizarre stories. Ultimately, it’s all about love, the only answer to hate. Another great job, boys.

Artist: NELL SMITH
Who: A highly talented teenage singer-songwriter, who died
in a car crash last October, only 17. Cruel, really cruel.

As a dedicated Flaming Lips fan, she got in contact with the Oklahoma band aged 13,
and after frontman Kevin Coyne found out that Nell has a great voice and musical skills,
they recorded a Nick Cave covers album together, titled Where The Viaduct Looms together in 2021. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Full of confidence, Nell Smith started to write songs for herself,f which are now collected on her posthumously released album, named ANXIOUS produced by renowned siblings Jack and Lily Walter.

It displays her artistically, far-reaching potential, with 10 spirited, real-life pop songs.
All beautifully orchestrated tunes. A combination of mixed emotions, reflective reveries and jaunty ruminations, with Smith‘s crystalline voice as the star in the middle. This record is/will be an everlasting memory of a bona fide artist in the making, who was taken from life abruptly, way too soon.

ANIKA – Wayward Songstress Fights Her Mind-Threathing Demons On New Stupefying Album ‘ABYSS’

15 April 2025

Press

Artist: ANIKA

Album: ABYSS

AllMusic says: “Anika may be known for her aloof persona, but emotion has always been a vital part of her music — and never more so than on Abyss. She brings just enough range to Abyss to avoid monotony, letting the personal bleed into the political… Confrontational in ways quiet and loud, Abyss is a testament to Anika’s fierce artistic independence and gift for haunting moods. Full review here.

TUTV: Abyss is sonically, her most heavy-laden longplayer. From revved-up pop crazing (Hearsay / Honey / Last Song) to psych rock shocks (Abyss / Oxygen / Out Of The Shadows).

ANIKA – Mesmerzing Songstress Offers First Single ‘HEARSAY’ From Her Upcoming 3rd LP

Daily electricity to load your batteries

6 February 2025

As a devoted fan of British, Berlin-based songstress ANIKAthe news of new material
makes my day. After two splendid albums with indie band Exploded View and 2 solo
LPs she announced the launch of her 4th one.

It’s baptized Abyss and will drop on April 4th. Pre-order-info here.

Press info: “Anika channels her frustration, anger, and confusion with the world into her third album, Abyss. Recorded live to tape at Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios, the album captures raw energy with minimal overdubs, resulting in a visceral and urgent 10-track journey fueled by intense emotions. Abyss reflects Anika’s desire to create a space where people can unite and feel free to express themselves amidst the chaos of the world. With influences ranging from 90s grunge and Courtney Love to Patti Smith and Genesis P-Orridge, the album is driven by a rebellious spirit.

Abyss also delves into the intense tensions between the left and right in contemporary society, exploring the complexities of human imperfection and healthy debate. From the thrashing intensity of “Oxygen” to the melancholic “Buttercups,” the album refuses to shy away from uncomfortable truths. Anika boldly confronts her own raw emotions, as exemplified in the candid lyrics of “Walk Away,” where she reflects on discontent with herself and the world.”

Album artwork

Anika about lead-single HEARSAY: “This song is about media moguls — about the power of the media, whether social, TV or beyond — we are as much under its spell as we ever were and some nasties are exploiting it for their own gains. Parasites feeding off the blood of the public — PJ Harvey inspired for sure.”

TUTV: Anika always had and still has a kind of mysterious aura surrounding her.
I think she would reject my perception of her music and her magnetic persona.
But that’s what my ears and my eyes tell me.

Anyway Hearsay‘s sound resonates richer than before. The song has a rockin’ groove
and poised drive with a psychedelic impact caused by guitars cutting like a chainsaw. On top comes Anika‘s mesmerizing voice and she tackles the polluting media brainwashing people.

So curious to hear what
the album will be like.

ANIKA Covers PSYCHIC TV (Genesis P-Orridge)

29 April 2022

Last year German singer-songwriter ANIKA scored with her first album
in 11 years. CHANGE was one of the most fascinating 2021 LPs in my book.

New (to me, anyway) is that she’s a fan of the late great unconventional
Genesis P-Orridge and his band PSYCHIC TV. He was an experimental
artist who turned dance music upside down.

Anika picked GOD STAR one of his most famous crackersto cover.

“Genesis is a big inspiration, the humor and investigation element in their work. I remember going to a talk in NYC where G recommended that no-one finish art school. I like this concept. Perhaps it leaves things unfinished and room for the individual to grow shoots, continue on their own journey. Perhaps this is like music school or any creative school. I think G specifically thought the place was bull and that they could do it better on their own terms, which turned out great. They also told a story about an art school work, which involved a used tampon in the shell of a clock. It was called Period Piece. I like the humor in this piece and the deconstruction of social boundaries. They are for sure an inspiration, in how to do things your own way, carve out your own path and don’t worry too much about what other people are doing.”

Anika‘s magnetic take…

Turn Up The Volume’s 20 KNOCKOUT TRACKS Of The Month – JANUARY 2021

Turn Up The Volume‘s 20 Knockout Tracks for January 2022!

A stream of rattling rippers, jagged jams, and romantic reveries.

All 20 together on Spotify

.
Here, knockout by knockout…

1. ‘Slowly Separate’ by CROWS (London)

Kamikaze guitars, boiling bluster, insane vocals. The London’s post-punks
are back with a holy smoke hammer as a warm-up for their second LP,
titled Beware Believers, out 1st of April.

I know it’s only January, but this is//will
be one of the best singles of 2022.

Bonkers time…

________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. ‘Piggy’ by SKUNK ANANSIE  (UK)

After 28 years, Skunk Anansie still is a massively popular band with Skin
screaming her lungs on this new killer single as if she’s still 28 years herself.
‘Piggy’ is an enraged eruption calling out all incompetent governments,
specifically UK’s short-sighted Brexit statesmen.

This red-hot-blistering shock wave explodes like
a metallic bomb with a volcanic Skin chorus.

Yeahhhhhh

________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. ‘Battery Not Included‘ by Ho99o9 (Los Angeles)

The industrial crossover punks scream that they
hate techno shit before going totally berserk
on this new slam dunk.

Ever had an electric chair experience?
Me neither, but I’m sure it sounds
like this…

________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. ‘Pour Another’ by YARD ACT (Leeds, UK)

These politically charged indie gunslingers from Leeds are the talk-of-the-town
lately. Every music website/zine is raving about, them. Their dazzling debut longplayer entered the British charts on #2 last weekend. One of the highlights is this bass-driven jackhammer. Infectious from the kick-off.

Topnotch

.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. ‘Mañana’ by JAMES DOMESTIC (Essex/Suffolk, UK)

A sirens intro, David Bowie‘s saxophone, and steel drums straight from Trinidad. Sounds like an exotic swing and shake ditty is coming up. No folks, it’s a lazy rap-sody you can play the morning after a drinking marathon. A slow start to get out of bed and sober up. Soul voice Clare Gillet takes care of the chirpy chorus and finally Domestic gets up for a couple of Mañana shouts.

Get up and move, ladies and gents…

________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. ‘Dead Weight’ by PLEASURE CRAFT (Toronto, CA)

After a ghostly intro, the drone machine starts up hitting like
a massive sledgehammer with an industrial exuberance. Merciless
and puissant. No rest for the wicked. Think The Horrors and NIN.

A master blaster! Absobloodylutely!

.
________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. ‘Fatso’ by WARMDUSCHER (London, UK)

Following in the soundsteps of legendary mega-funk-groover Sly Stone with
a 21st Century post-punk coolness and a pumped-up synth-tastic puissance
this London combo activates all of your muscles, your bloodstream, and your
appetite for behaving like a midnight rambler.

This mid-tempo disco jam helps you to keep in shape at your hot spot
at home until the nightclubs reopen. It’s a Warmduscher affair, folks.

8. ‘Green Goddess’ by SEA POWER (UK)

Socially engaged indie pop-rockers who started their journey back in 2003.
In the very beginning, they operated as British Air Power, but changed it quickly
to British Sea Power. But last summer the band announced another name change,
dropping ‘British‘.

Their new, 7th full-length, titled Everything Was Forever lands on 11 February.
With new single Green Goddess they do what they do best, writing anthemic pop
tunes that stick after one play.

Yeeees

9. ‘La Fusée Du Chagrin’ by ELEPHANT STONE (Canada)

After a 5-4-3-2-1 countdown this rocket blasts into space with supersonic speed.
No looking back, full steam ahead, pushed by a banging drum/bass beat and crazed guitars. Somewhere in the middle, it’s time to reload the batteries and start all over
again fueled by swirling synths et les dernier mots de M. Lonely.

Psychedelia at its mind-boggling best.
Un coup de poing formidable!

10. ‘The Magic’ by EELS (Los Angeles)

Eels made another Eels album sounding like an Eels album.
But as Mark Oliver Everett moves and grooves, rocks and rolls
like in the good days Extreme Witchcraft feels like he’s having fun,
although you never know for sure with his capricious state of mind.

The Magic is definitely my favorite piece

11. ‘Farewell, OK’ by ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS (UK)

Two weeks ago Costello released his 32nd album called
The Boy Named If. And it’s a triumph, praised by the press
and my ears.

Elvis rocks big time again…

12. ‘Capture The Stills’ by EX-HYENA (Boston)

This twilight hallucination resonates as the shadowy side of Depeche Mode
and the enigmatic darkwave murk of The Soft Moon. The iterating synth-riff
at work here gets under your skin without asking. The atmosphere is impending,
the tone is obscure, the color is black. All you need for a sonic nightmare.

New cut from the Boston duo’s forthcoming
sophomore album Moon Reflections.

Quite special…

13. ‘Planningtochange’ by ANIKA and PLANNINGTOROCK

This is a rotating remix of the title track of Anika‘s excellent album
released last year. British electronic musician Planningtorock
turned the song into a trippy and vibrant electro beat-breaker.

Anika‘s distorted voice changes the mood
of the original recording. More mystifying,
more mysterious.

Catch the change…

14. ‘How To Breathe’ by GRAMMONTH (Belgium)

The smooth pop elegance of Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), the mellow
vocality of Adam Granduciel (The War Drugs) and his twinkling guitar
play to end this sweet little pearl. Sonic dreaming at its finest with
a tantalizing pearl that gets under your skin, slowly but surely. Top!

15. ‘Scream Quietly’ by REVOLUTION ABOVE DISORDER (Dublin, Ireland)

This is the moniker of Vancouver-based Dubliner Stephen Nicholas White describes
himself as a post-punk/nugaze/electro artist. This new single circles around a repetitive
guitar riff and shiny synths with Eels echoes. Magnetic, hypnotic, and mesmeric.

16. ‘Delusion Spree’ by EADES (Leeds, UK)

In the past few years, another Britwave of young rousing wolves
has emerged and looks to turn into a sonic tsunami. Black Midi,
Black Country New Road, Black Honey, Fontaines D.C
. (I know they’re
Irish), Yard Act, and several more prove that guitar rock is
alive and kicking again.

Now you can add Leeds’ hungry squad Eades. With
6-track EP Abstract Education EP, released last Spring,
they made it loud and clear they’re not a one-trick pony.

Here’s sonic proof…

17. ‘You The People’ by VONAMOR (Italy)

This is a mindboggling knockout. You The People starts as a meditative harbinger
for a mindboggling sonic orgasm midway, inflamed by whamming percussion, an
ear-shattering guitar explosion, and haunting male/female, English/Italian vocals
before an abrupt comedown ends this rad rush of blood to the head. Wow!

18. ‘Gallows’ by VAZUM

Gallows progresses like a death march, on its way to the graveyard,
with a somber and macabre reverberation. Its repetitive and raucous
slo-mo dynamics evoke images of confusion, agitation, and transitoriness.

Get lost in the woods…

19. ‘Happy Birthday Forever’ by TESS PARKS (Toronto, CA)

Toronto-born, London-based femme fatale Tess Parks has a new album,
called And Those Who Were Seen Dancing, out 2 April. Her first longplayer
in 13 years.

Lead single Happy Birthday Forever is a pretty catchy surprise.
It spins around in your head before you’re even aware of it.

20. ‘Vercingétorix Face à l’Empire’ by FRAZYL

This is the solo project of Jérôme R. Desrosiers, who played
drums in different Black Metal and Death Metal in the late 90s.
He’s making synth music for about 20 years now, but it’s only
since 2018 that he decided to share his work.

He just issued his new album Mon Odyssée. An imaginative
journey with cinematic synth symphonies, like this one…

Album Of The Month – Berlin Based Artist ANIKA With Red Room Album ‘CHANGE’

Best album of July 2021

31 July 2021

Artist: ANIKA
Who:: Fascinating Berlin-based artist Annika Henderson who released
her wayward, self-titled solo debut LP in 2010. She also made two
notable LPs with Exploded View. You can stream Obey (2018) and
Exploded View (2016) here.

New Album: CHANGE
Released: 23 July 2021 via Nevada Records

Anika: “It’s a moment caught in time. This album had been planned for a little
while and the circumstances of its inception were quite different to what had been
expected. This colored the album quite significantly. The lyrics were all written there
on the spot. It’s a vomit of emotions, anxieties, empowerment, and of thoughts like,
“How can this go on? How can we go on?”

Key-line: “I think we can change, we all have things
to learn, about ourselves and about each other.”

AllMusic/Heather Phares says: “Change’s artful, heartfelt expressions of frustration
and hope aren’t just perfect for the transformative time in which they appeared, they’re
also an exciting and satisfying reintroduction to Anika the solo artist.”

Full review here. Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume
says: I can’t help it but from the first spin on of this most
intriguing longplayer, images of the mysterious Red Room in Twin Peaks popped
up on the screen in my head. The red-blooded color, the uncanny atmosphere, the
chill-out tune in that specific scene (listen below). Anika would fit in there just perfectly.
Her bewitching intonation, her magnetic timbre, her human-mind quest, her jazzy Kraut-pop-esque euphony, all contribute to the scarlet shadows wandering in my mind when listening to Change, again and again.

Only Way To Survive Is Unification Not Division – Here’s New Single ‘RIGHTS’ By ANIKA

3 July 2021

Artist: ANIKA

Who: Intriguing Berlin-based artist Annika Henderson who released
her wayward, self-titled solo debut LP in 2010. She also made two
notable LPs with Exploded View. You can stream Obey (2018) and
Exploded View (2016) here.

New album: CHANGE
Out via Nevada Records on 23 July.

New single: RIGHTS – the third one after
the title track and Finger Ties

Anika about ‘Rights’: “We all have Rights. Feeling marginalised is shit. This song is about empowerment, to those normally on the fringe, who feel like they have no voice. This song is about turning the tables, giving power to those who normally feel disempowered. This song is about feeling trapped and wanting to get out. This song is about unification not division. This song is about female (/queer/non-b/marginalised communities) empowerment – the joining of forces, not pitted against each other. This song is about wanting to escape reality but then we can never truly escape it, it will always be there to collect its dues.”

I know I’m repeating myself when it comes to express my love for Anika, but she’s that kind of singular artist that sends chills down my spine. Her near-spoken and seductive voice, her spellbinding stories, her sonic Krautpop mesmerism, her caring human touch, and her charismatic appearance are all triggering my Anika-repeat-modus over and over again. We all have rights, we all have favorites. Anika is one of mine.

“Feel the power/ Show me power”…

The video clip is directed by Sabrina Labis and Annika Henderson
