THE BEATLES released one of their countless hit singles today
60 years ago, on May 30th, with PAPERBACK WRITER.

It was #1 in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada,
New Zealand
and severel European countries.

The song was largely written by Paul McCartney, who based the lyrics on a challenge made to him by his Aunt Lil. Macca in 1966: “Years ago, my Auntie Lil said to me, ‘Why do you always write songs about love all the time? Can’t you ever write about a horse or the summit conference or something interesting?’ So, I thought, ‘All right, Auntie Lil.’” So he wrote a song about a book.

Today 70 years ago, on 5 May 1956, ELVIS PRESLEY occupied the top
spot on the American Single Charts and stayed there for 7 consecutive
weeks. It was The King‘s first No. 1 in his home country.

The song was written by a songstress and former high-school teacher
named Mae Boren Axton and songwriter/steel guitarist Tommy Durden
and also credited to Presley himself.

A newspaper article about the suicide of a lonely man
who jumped from a hotel window inspired the song.

The late great country star JOHNNY CASH released his
classic I WALK THE LINE on 1 May 1956, 68 years ago
today.

It was his first No.1 on the US Billboard country charts. It remained on the charts for over 43 weeks. Inspired by the backward playback of guitar runs on his tape recorder, the man in black used the technique to produce the unique chord progression of the song. It also includes Cash’s distinctive “boom-chicka-boom” sound, created by putting a dollar bill in the neck of his guitar.

and ‘Fontana Records‘. Both pressings were taken from the identical master
recording therefore Billboard combined the sales for both releases, making
it the only single to simultaneously reach number one for two companies.
