Rock legends the EAGLES released their 4th LP ONE OF THIS NIGHTS
in 1975. It was their commercial breakthrough album. It went No. 1
in the US and No. 8 in the UK.
Its title track was one of their biggest hit singles, written by
drummer Don Henley and guitarist Glen Frey. It occupied the
top spot of the US Singles Chart on 3 August 1975, today 50 years ago.
Henley: “We like to be a nice little country-rock band from
Los Angeles… about half the time. We wanted to get away
from the ballad syndrome with ‘One of These Nights’.”
Frey: “We wanted the song to have a lot
of teeth, a lot of bite—a nasty track with
pretty vocals.”
For most critics and fans (including me) Radiohead‘s 3rd longplayer is their best.
Mojo wrote: “Others may end up selling more, but in 20 years’ time
I’m betting OK Computer will be seen as the key record of 1997, the
one to take rock forward instead of artfully revamping images and
song-structures from an earlier era.”
Legendary Californian rockers EAGLES scored a gigantic hit with their brilliant epic story of HOTEL CALIFONRIA that always reminds me, when I hear the song, of the remote hotel in the mountains in the classic horror movie The Shining with Jack Nicholson delivering one of his best psycho performances ever.
This everlasting classic was written by Don Felder & Don Henley (music), and the late Glenn Frey (lyrics) and featured a memorable Joe Walsh guitar solo. It peaked at #1 in
the US today 47 years ago, on 11 May 1977, and scored big time on the rest of the planet.
It was the title track of their fifth full length and sublime million-seller album that turned
the band into global rock stars.

But you can never leave”
All you need to know about one of the biggest bands ever.
“One thing you can be pretty sure the Eagles never did was to take it easy. Though already veterans of several countrywide late 1960s bands from the tail-end of the country rock boom, as you’ll read in this new Deluxe Edition, by the time the original line-up came together at Doug Weston’s Troubadour Club in Los Angeles, they weren’t so much disheartened by what had gone before, more primed and ready to make their next move.
In the right place at the right time, the Eagles seized their moment. Ambitious musically as well as personally, they were driven by what some called perfectionism, but might more correctly be identified as a desire to maximise their potential. Over their legendary run of albums in the 1970s – reviewed in-depth on the following pages – the band moved from definitively mellow recordings with contributions from each member, through concept albums, and increasingly to a completely unique and widescreen take on the state of their era. Along the way, they touched on ecology, paranoid relationships, hard rock and disco.
The fact that the Eagles are still playing in 2024 – now on the “Long Goodbye Tour”, is
down to the strength of music made on that run of 1970s albums. In his most recent meeting with Uncut, the band’s driving force, Don Henley, was circumspect on many aspects of the band’s career – but still couldn’t quite get over their decision to reform in 1994, and just how much Eagles music still means“.

Their masterpiece, song and album.
This day, 8 March, co-founder Randy Meisner would have celebrated his 78th birthday.
Unfortunately he died due to complications associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Los Angeles, on 26 July 2023, at the age of 77. R.I.P.
RANDY MEISNER (born Randall Herman Meisner on 8 March 1946), the co-founder, bassist/vocalist/co-songwriter of country rock icons the EAGLES passed away 3 days
ago, on 26 July following complications with a lung disease. He was 77.
Meisner co-formed the band in 1971, but already left in September 1977 citing exhaustion. The toll for becoming one of the greatest rock acts in the world, meaning almost 24/7 touring, in a short time was to heavy. He started his solo career a year
later.
He had a magnific voice, but rarely sang on Eagles songs.
Here’s an exception. He did the lead-vocals on one of the group’s
biggest hitsTake It To The Limit which he co-wrote (from their 1975
million-seller LP One Of These Nights).
Los Angeles‘ global country-rock heroesEAGLES started a jumbo career with their self-titled debut LP, released 50 years ago tomorrow, on 1st June 1972. It was recorded in London. The production cost was $125,000. The Eagles line-up back then: Glenn Frey (guitar, vocals), Don Henley (drummer/vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitar, vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass, vocals).
The longplayer was an immediate success for the young amigos, peaking at #22 in the US, but going platinum over the years. The LP was ranked number 368 in the 2012 edition of Rolling Stone Magazine‘s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, despite the fact they only gave a lukewarm 3-star review when it came out.
