JONI MITCHELL Reveals Details Of A New Release In Her Archives Series

Iconic songstress JONI MITCHELL was at a turning point 50 years ago.
After making four acclaimed albums with Reprise Records, including her
1971 masterpiece Blue, she left the label to join the brand-new
Asylum Records in 1972.

Over the next seven years, Mitchell would record some of the most acclaimed music
of her career while changing her musical direction by adding more jazz elements into
her songwriting. The evolution culminated in 1979 with Mingus, her collaboration with
jazz titan Charles Mingus, and her last studio album for Asylum.

Explore the beginning of that prolific era with THE ASYLUM ALBUMS (1972-1975),
the next part in the Joni Mitchell Archives series.

The collection features newly remastered versions of For The Roses (1972), Court And Spark (1974), the double live album Miles Of Aisles (1974), and The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975). All four were recently remastered by Bernie Grundman.

A 2001 STEELY DAN Cover Of JONI MITCHELL Pearl ‘CAREY’ Finally Surfaces

Back in 2001 New York legends STEELY DAN (Walter Becker (RIP)
and now 74-year-old Donald Fagen) recorded JONI MITCHELL‘s 1971
song CAREY for a tribute album to the singer-songwriter heroine (also
including Prince and Bjôrk among others).

The tribute wasn’t released until 2007, but without Steely Dan‘s cover.
Nobody knew where the track was archived. But a couple of days ago
a DJ named Steve Acri played the track on Pittsburgh Freeform radio. No
further details so far.

Anyway, the song found its way to the Internet via
The Dan Vault (a fanatic Steely Dan fan looking for
and posting rare SD material).

Singer-songwriter GRAHAM NASH (also a published photographer) was born in
Blackpool, UK on 2 February 1972, 80 years ago. The golden voice had his greatest successes as a member of CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG. But the first time he
came in the picture was with the British ith pop group THE HOLLIES (1963-1968).

After he left the band he moved to Los Angeles. In 1968 CSN started a long and triumphant journey with the masterpiece 1970 Déja Vu (with Neil Young as fourth
member) as their most famous work. During that era and afterward Nash
made several solo LPs.

After his first marriage broke up he had a love/hate relationship with legendary folk songstress Joni Mitchell. Nash wrote Our House on piano, in an hour, at their love
nest, in Hollywood Hills, LA. He’s still active as a solo artist. His most recent longplayer
This Path Tonight came out in 2016. Next month the legend starts a new tour.

JONI MITCHELL – ‘Archives Volume 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971)’ Out Now

Active: Since 1964 / 19th studio albums with Shine as the most recent,
released in 2017.

New collection: Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968–1971)

Info: “The tracks on Archives Vol II have been sequenced chronologically to follow Mitchell in real time through one of the most creative periods of her career. The collection uncovers several unreleased Mitchell originals, including “Jesus” recorded in 1969 at her friend Jane Lurie’s New York apartment in Chelsea, which also served as the setting for the song “Chelsea Morning.”

Other highlights include Mitchell’s performance at Le Hibou Coffee House in Ottawa on March 19, 1968 that was recorded by Jimi Hendrix and a concert at the Paris Theatre in London on October 29, 1970 that was broadcast on the BBC. The latter includes several songs destined
to appear on Blue the following year: “Carey,” “River” and “My Old Man.” In addition, singer-songwriter James Taylor joined Mitchell to perform with her during the second half of the show.”

Pitchfork says: “Spanning the years between her debut and Blue, this 122-song
set documents the hard work of exploration, revision, and rejection that shaped
the songwriter’s first masterpiece. It is a humanizing wonder.” Score: 8.5/10.

When CHELSEA WOLFE Covers JONI MICTHELL

Although she wasn’t at the historic three-day Woodstock festival
in 1969, singer-songwriter legend JONI MITCHELL wrote a song
about it. It appeared as B-side to her single Big Yellow Taxi. Several
artists, including her friends Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young covered it.

Goth heroine CHELSEA WOLFE about why she wanted to cover Woodstock:

“While preparing for the ‘Birth Of Violence’ tour, I was watching a lot of Joni Mitchell videos.
One night after working on the live set I was just letting the Joni videos roll. “Woodstock” came on and I started singing along. After that I simply asked Ben if he’d be into covering it with me for the tour. The cover came together quite naturally and it was a treat to play on stage every night. Joni is obviously such a big inspiration to this side of my music, so it felt right to pay tribute to her.”
