The famous blues-rock tandem THE BLACK KEYS went back to the roots that inspired
and fueled their successful career. Today their album of covers of golden blues oldies, titled DELTA KREAM arrived. A collection honoring the heroes of the Mississippi Hill Country Blues.

NME says:“The duo have never courted celebrity, and here they delve deeper than ever before into the swampy roots of their genre’s forefathers… This record reinforces a willing and gradual retreat from the rock juggernaut space The Black Keys once occupied. The moody jams bubble with authenticity in a deeply satisfying trip back in time. While this record is unlikely to bring the band or the cultural touchstones they cover back to the top, it’s a soul-searching move that satisfies their own fandom while showing they’ll never compromise.”

NME‘s verdict: “This bold and nostalgic double album from the legendary Merseyside indie experimentalists features their most adventurous writing so far… Sprinkled with the sound of distant seagulls and Hawaiian guitars for good measure, along with vivid storytelling, it’s a bold move for The Coral to come out with something so intricate at this stage of their career, even taking the time to pen an accompanying book. Turn Up The Volume: Just like with the brand new Teenage Fanclub album the overall feeling is that The Coral keeps on coming up with the same melodiousness as, let’s say, their 5 previous longplayers. Mind you, many feel-good, mellow and sepia-colored tunes, but nothing to get really excited about. A single album would have been a better idea.

Active: 1984–1997, 2005–present / 12 albums (so far).

J Mascis: “I was listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy, so I was trying to get some
of that dueling twin-lead sound. But the recording session was pretty well
finished by the time things really hit the fan. When the lockdown happened
in March, that meant I was on my own. But it was cool.”

Pitchfork: “Against steep odds, the Western Massachusetts noisemakers’ classic
lineup has made more records in the 21st century than they did in the ’80s, and
unlike Pixies, they’ve achieved a kind of lineup equilibrium that eluded them the
first go-round… Featuring co-production from Kurt Vile, the classic trio’s latest
reunion album is their breeziest and most melodically generous yet.”
Score: 7/10.

Turn Up The Volume: This could easily be one of their 90s albums.
Same fuzz, same buzz. Still slacking like in the early days. Too familiar
for my liking.

like the immutability of nature, the way it will take back any piece of untended space
as its own…. Wild like the whale; like a powerful animal. Or a virus—the beast that

Turn Up The Volume: A fitting soundtrack for a funeral. The funeral of humankind. The funeral of the planet we, ourselves, destroyed. Somber and apocalyptic. Repetitive doom-and-gloom psychedelia. Repetitive wall-of-guitar-scapes. Goosebumps all the way. One word: Götterdämmerung!
