THE PRETENDERS Topped The UK Album Charts 45 Years Ago Today With Their Debut LP

Back in time

10 February 2025

CHRISSIE HYNDE (73 now) and her PRETENDERS had
instant success in the UK with their Self-titled Debut LP.

It topped the Charts this day 45 years ago, on 10 February 1980.
It peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum, over
the ocean, 2 years later.

Sounds (UK music weekly) said at the time: “Its success, which should
be fairly apparent through the next few months, will be valued not through
hype and wildly enthusiastic pen-happy journalists but through a number
of strong album tracks.”

It featured 3 of their best singles ever.

CHRISSIE HYNDE And PRETENDERS Have ‘A LOVE’ To Share

New striking strokes

28 July 2023

CHRISSIE HYNDE and her PRETENDERS dropped the news of the release of their
12th album, baptized Relentless, back in April. It will arrive on September 1st.

Today they treat their fans with another, the 3th, cut named A LOVE

Hynde: “I suppose ‘A Love’ is the most traditionally Pretenders-sounding song on
the album, in the vein of ‘Kid’ or ‘Talk Of The Town’ or any of the midtempo ones over
the years. I often see love/relationships almost in the same vein as drug addiction.
Although, having said that, I know I am jaded and cynical.”

Tune in.

All 3 shared tracks.

PRETENDERS Share Romantic Lullaby ‘I THINK ABOUT YOU DAILY’ From Their Forthcoming LP

New striking strokes

20 June 2023

Last month CHRISSIE HYNDE and her PRETENDERS announced that their new LP,
the 12th, titled Relentless, will come out on September 1. The news was accompanied
by the jangly lead single Let The Sun Come In.

Soon after (30 May) I saw the band play a cooking show in Antwerp, Belgium,
with Hynde turning all cylinders on like an eager Riot grrrl, despite being 71.

And now the stars share a second appetizer named I THINK ABOUT YOU DAILY.
A romantic and nostalgic piano ballad. It also features a string arrangement from Radiohead‘s multi-instrumentalist Johny Greenwood, who also conducted the
12 Ensemble in the recording session.

Hynde about Greenwood: “I met Jonny a couple of times, and we’re obviously big fans
of him because he’s done some incredible music over the years. I saw him at the Phantom Thread premiere, where the film was running onscreen with a live orchestra playing. And we spoke afterward and he expressed an interest in doing something one day. I was thrilled and very surprised. He also came down to see a Valve Bone Woe show we were doing in the basement of a Pizza Express. So when we discussed the idea of getting strings on “I Think
About You Daily,” he was the first choice. Legend!”

Dim the light, sit down, relax and lit a candle.

Happy B. To Riot Pop Grrrl CHRISSIE!

7 September 2021

Christine Ellen Hynde was born on 7 September 1951
in Akron, Ohio, US. Happy 70 Chrissie! Forever young!

She formed world-famous pop/rock band the Pretenders in 1975 and became their primary singer-songwriter, guitarist and their gorgeous face. After all these years the band’s still going strong. So far they released 11 studio albums with Hate For Sale (2020)
as the most recent one.

Her flamboyance, her outspokenness, her huge pop songwriting skills
and her don’t mess with me rock chick girl appearance is still intact, she’s
just a little bit older. Coolness in motion.

Turn Up The Volume picked these
3 top Chrissie moments to celebrate
the eternal Riot pop grrrl’s birthday.

Classy Chrissie Coolness – Listen To ‘HATE FOR SALE’ By PRETENDERS

18 July 2020

Band: PRETENDERS
Album: HATE FOR SALE
The band’s eleventh LP
Released: 17 July 2020
Info: “Hate For Sale, produced by the revered Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur), is
the latest studio album by The Pretenders via BMG. The album features 10 new songs written collaboratively by Chrissie Hynde and the electrifyingly dynamic guitarist James Walbourne, in what is the first Hynde/Walbourne songwriting collaboration to date.”

THE INDEPENDENT: “Thigh boots hoiked rakishly over denim, the swashbuckling queen of British new wave Chrissie Hynde has always trodden a singular rock’n’roll path. A feminist
icon renowned for snarling and snorting her way through a man’s world without compromise…Reunited with drummer Martin Chambers, the only other surviving original member, they attack the record with a reunion band zeal. Sultry and uncompromising variety from a music icon.”
Full review here. Score: 3/5

Key phrase: “Rebel with a cause.”
