PANDA BEAR & SONIC BOOM – New Collaborative Album ‘RESET’ Out Now

15 August 2022

(Artwork new album)

American multi-instrumentalist Noah Benjamin Lennox better known as
PANDA BEAR and equally musical centipede Peter Kember aka SONIC BOOM
(co-founder of Spacemen 3) worked together again. The result is the new album,
titled Reset. It’s inspired by Kember’s collection of records from the ’50s and ’60s
and has several samples of hits of those memorable music decades on this new longplayer.

Pitchfork says: “Sharing equal billing for the first time, longtime collaborators Noah Lennox and Peter Kember achieve an intoxicating mind meld over a sample-heavy tribute to 1960s pop. Reset addresses our own troubled zeitgeist by avoiding the ambient dread, blithe critique, and seething anger that often characterize records we consider to be topical today… Less palliative than corrective, Reset is a dose of human lightness in the drudgery of the now. Conventional wisdom says that only younger performers have the unspoiled optimism and energy necessary to make such enthusiasm believable—the ardent songs Reset samples, after all, were sung by teens or twenty-somethings. But Panda Bear and Sonic Boom counter with the longevity of artists who have never compromised, and they give us the defiant Reset knowing that despair is a weapon in the hands of a present hell-bent on stamping out our souls.” Score: 8/10.

TUTV: Back to the future spirit all the way.

Psychedelic Blues Sketches – SONIC BOOM Back After 30 Years With ‘ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL’ Album

4 October 2020

Artist: Peter Kember aka SONIC BOOM
Who: Singer/musician/producer who worked in recent years with MGMT, Panda Bear
and Beach House among others. He’s best known as the co-founder of sound-exploring band Spacemen 3 (1982-1991), with the brilliant Jason Pierce who started his own project Spiritualized afterward.

Album: All Things Being Equal – first longplayer
in 30 years with his Sonic Boom project
Released: 7 June 2020

Info: “It’s a meditative, mathematical record concerned with the interconnectedness of memory, space, consumerism, consciousness—everything. Through regenerative stories told backwards and forwards, Kember explores dichotomies zen and fearsome, reverential of his analog toolkit and protective of the plants and trees that support our lives.”

Pitchfork wrote: “On his first proper solo album in 30 years, the Spacemen 3 cofounder ruminates on mortality and transcendence over a glowing bed of analog synths… Pete Kember has been playing more or less the same song for almost 40 years. It’s built on blues swagger, but slowed down until it sways. It’s informed both lyrically and melodically by minimalism, insisting on simplicity. And though it throbs like techno, it’s directed at the head, not the feet or anywhere in between. It’s both solipsistic and psychedelic, urging listeners to travel into their own depths and welcome the joy and despair they might find there.” Full review here.

Peter Kember: “I never really planned to make a lot of records. I never really had an urge
to make lots of records, but I did want to be happy and solid in all the records that I put out.”

Turn Up The Volume: “Ladies and gentlemen
we are floating in blues space over and over.”

Psychedelic Act THE PINK ELEPHANTS Cover SONIC BOOM – Here’s ‘ANGEL…

5 February 2020

THE PINK ELEPHANTS is the psychedelic project of Ottawa based artist Peter
McNestry
working with collaborators from Athens, Austin and the UK. They just
shared a cover of SONIC BOOM aka Peter Kember, who also was the co-founder
of psych legends Spacemen 3, with Jason Pierce (mastermind of Spiritualized), and
who formed Spectrum later on. As a producer he worked with bands such as MGMT, Panada Bear and Beach House.

THE PINK ELEPHANTS picked SONIC BOOM track ANGEL (released in 1989) to cover. Compared to the original their version is spacier and more tranquilizing with layers of synths creating an atmospheric and symphonic euphony that transfers you to never-
never land. The overall vibe is mind-relaxing, moony and transcendent. Great  score!
