British musician GAZ COOMBES was born on 8 March 1976 in Oxford, England. Happy 50 to the former frontman/songwriter of rock trio SUPERGRASS with whom
he made/released six albums between 1995 and 2008. Recently, they did some
reunion shows.
With 2023’s longplayer Turn The Car Around
he released his 4th successful solo LP.
Britrock stars SUPERGRASS (1993-2010, 2019- present) fronted by Gaz Coombes (who
also has 4 solo albums on his mantelpiece) released their adrenaline-fueled debut longplayer I SHOULD COCO on 15 May 1995, today 30 years ago.
Culturally, the album’s glorification of teenage freedom made a very big impact on
the overall Britpop music scene. The whole genre was seen as the voice of youth, but Supergrass, still teens themselves when the album was made, addressed the subject
with more insight than most.
The album title is Cockney rhyming slang for “I should think so“.
It topped the UK Album Charts.
NME said: “They play with the skill and assurance of a band who’ve been going for
decades yet they still burn off the buzz of being new to the game. There’s nothing
contrived about ‘I Should Coco’, nothing added for effect.”

Legendary British power pop punk trio SUPERGRASS will celebrate the
30th anniversary of their ace debut longplayer I SHOULD COCO (released
on 6 July 1995) featuring incendiary debut single Caught By The Fuzz, with
UK shows in 2025.
Album: PARKLIFE – their 3rd LP
It topped the UK Album Charts this day in 1994.
Four times platinum.
The album was originally going to be entitled London and the album cover shot was going to be of a fruit-and-vegetable cart. Albarn stated tongue-in-cheek, “That was the last time that Dave Balfe was, sort of, privy to any decision or creative process with us, and that was his final contribution: to call it London“. The cover refers to the British pastime of greyhound racing.
The title of the album is cockney rhyming slang for “I should think so”.
The LP’s front cover is a painting based on three separate DIY photos
of band members Coombes, Goffey, and Quinn. It topped the UK Charts
this day in 1995.

To celebrate SUPERGRASS‘ return let’s go back to 1997, to their excellent second album, their bestseller IN IT FOR THE MONEY released on 21 April 1997. The LP reached at No. 2 in the UK, selling 300,000 copies and over one million (!) worldwide. Surprised frontman Gaz Coombes commented: “The fact that it has sold more worldwide than ‘I Should Coco’ means we can sleep at night.
AllMusic wrote: “On its second album, the cleverly titled In It for the Money, Supergrass brought the songs to the forefront, slowing the tempos considerably and constructing a
varied, textured album that makes the band’s ambition and skill abundantly clear.”

25 years ago today, on 17 October 1994, Oxford’s sharp rockers SUPERGRASS released their debut single ‘CAUGHT BY THE FUZZ‘. An alacritous ripper written about lead singer Gaz Coombes‘ arrest for being caught in possession of cannabis. The track peaked at #43 on the UK Singles Chart and was included on their debut LP I Should Coco, that appeared
a year later. The band released 7 albums during their 17-year stint (1993-2010) and they decided some time ago to reunite. They will be touring throughout 2020. Live dates here.
